I generally use speakers unless I'm playing an H-Game, watching a really sappy movie (City of Angels, etc), or watching porn or hentai.

Headphones tend to hurt the outer edges of my ears after a few hours, so I only use them when walking. It helps to have good speakers.

I use both regularly, but I like using Speakers when I'm using the computer. But even then, they're on low volume.

I use headphones when I'm listening to my iPod, which is possibly 4 hours a day.

I would use my nice 4.2 (aw yeah, two subwoofers) speaker setup more often, but my brother ALWAYS complains about the bass, and I'm rarely home when he's not. An "acceptable" bass level for him is like listening through a tin can, so the headphones reluctantly go on.

I really should get my own place.

I don't mean to be critical but 26 and you live with your brother? Kick him out is what I say (if it's already your place). If not get your own.

Unfortunately, he owns the house. He's a couple years younger than me, but he got a head start on moving out. I was kinda short on funds when my time came, and moving in with him was the cheapest option.

He is selling the house in a few months, though, and I finally make enough to afford my own place...

I hate people like that. They complain about the volume until you have it down so low you can't hear it over the computer's fan. Like hell you could hear that 2 floors above.

Computer - Speakers
Other - Headphones (majority of the time)

Speakers, since my computer tends to give out a slight interferance if you listen with headphones, while speakers' poorer quality removes this.
Otherwise, I have like three good pairs of headphones, one real bad pair.

This topic is made of so much fail it hurts.

I've gotten a decent sub (they're cheap guys, seriously), two awesome speakers, and a decent sound card.

The sound card helps, quite a bit, and my speakers are positioned just right. The subs a powerful beast when I want it to be. Current sound system is perfect for listening to music and gaming.

It also helps that I know how to hook stuff up and that I'm not a head-phone wearing, bass fearing, weak sauce Nancy boy.

Or something along those lines.

I prefer headphones on the sole fact that nobody can hear what you're listening to. Plus it makes stuff sound better.

Depends on what's going where.

I've got three major audio systems that I use:

1) An old Sony CFS-1035 Boombox for my computer audio that's over 11 years old.
2) A very-much newer MHC-GX450 shelf system (400W stereo/DDS) with an 8" sub for use with TV (crap) and Sony PlayStation/2 (not crap).
3) A VERY GOOD PAIR of Sony Fontopia headphones that have incredible bass frequency response (6Hz) and decent treble pickup (23,000Hz). This is primarily used on my Sony PSYC CD player.

Yea, I trust Sony, as you can tell. Usually those headphones only get used in my CD player because they're needed then and only then. I can't really use my sub too often because if I'm playing something with high bass or attacking with massive bass on, the neighbors ACROSS THE STREET will hear it at volume 18 or higher.

Whether I use speakers or headphones, I keep it quiet anyway. I seem to be a bit oversensitive to loud sounds, so I don't really have much choice...

This becomes problematic when my mother listens to music so loudly that people actually have to yell for her to hear them. Luckily, that only happens about three times a week...

I wish I didn't live in an apartment building. Then I could push my X-Fi and 7.1 surround system to the limit.

While we're on the subject can anyone recommend a good pair of headphones?

Ones they have actually used. They MUST be comfortable and canot enter the ear canal. I have large outer ears but small inner ears. Sounding great is a must. Price does not matter.

Usually the rather large headphones (such as ones for gaming) provide excellent quality. I bought $30.00 headphones a in June or July, and they still work in both ears. I use them all the time; when I'm bored at home, in car rides, at school around campus, and even when I'm sleeping/laying down. Here's the good points of these types of headphones:

-Excellent quality, like a miniature stereo on your ears
-Very sturdy and hard to break
-Long life, no matter what (unless you cut the wire or something
-Convenient (would you rather pay 10 bucks for crap headphones every month, or 30 for good ones that last a year?)

It doesn't matter which company, as long as they're large, good, and comfortable.

I use gaming head phones all the time. Sadly... they break easily... I've gone through two already but I think I secured it this time. No more breaking for you!

As a sweeping generalization, headphones give better detail and clarity, and speakers give better power and stereo presence. I use both since I have cases where I specifically need sealed 'phones or speakers, or even both at once. For general listening, I prefer my speakers. I don't find that my headphones are that much more detailed, but then again I do use near-field monitors as my main speakers.

Koitenshin: Does price actually not matter? If you're serious, then check out something like these or these, paired up with something like this. If that's a bit pricey, then I might recommend these, which I actually rather liked the sound on, before I swapped them for something sealed. If that's still more than you want to spend, then there are still some pretty decent ones for less, but I won't go listing those off unless they're more up your alley.

...and can differentiate between left and right, which is good for gaming.

Unless you're talking about mono, you're wrong. Whenever one of my speakers doesn't work (depends on the volume), sounds that come from the mute speaker cannot be heard/are really faint.

I always use my (not so good) speakers that came with the computer (Dell). I should use headphones some time... I've been too lazy to use them, though. Plus, my other headphones broke/got messed up randomly one day.
