Now, I'm pretty sure these are pretty standard mods in the guitar world, but googling does not lead me to anything. (probably because they are so basic)
My guitar (as seen in my avatar) has a fender/wilkensin vintage style, non-locking trem. I want to float the thing. I tried loosening the springs - obviously I went out of tune, as to be expected, but I probably didn't loosen enough or something. The trem stayed flat to the body. I don't care about tuning instability, there are some "tricks" to help stay in tune, and I'm not pulling any vais (until I get my next guitar with locking trem). I just want it so I can do up-bends with the whammy. Also, I heard somewhere that you can loosen/remove the middle screws by the trem saddles, and it will work more like an American Standard bridge. I don't expect wonders, but I do want to try it. Do I just remove the screws or what? I'm sure there's a site somewhere that documents these things, so a link there would be helpful. Although if someone here could explain it to me, that would be just as good . |

How many springs are there in the trem cavity? There's usually 5 spring positions on the 'claw,' and you'll probably want 3 springs in positions 1, 3, and 5. If that's what you've got, it's just a matter of loosening them until the bridge lifts. You might find you get a bit more stability if you attach the claw end of the springs to the middle 3 hooks, so the edge springs angle outward.
I don't know anything about removing the middle screws, but I can't really picture it being a good idea. Making 2 screws bear the load intended for 6 can't be good for them. |

So you want it to float?
http://www.bassandguitar.com/guitar_bridges.htm Though pricey, some of those bridges look pretty cool, and the BabyGrand especially They're floaters, to my knowledge, but to be fair I only checked the BabyGrand |

If you're not able to get it to float, I'd go ahead and replace the bridge with a locking trem. Though I always hella tighten the springs on my guitars because I DON'T want my trem to float. They're more of a pain to tune that way and I like to be able to rest my hand heavily against the bridge. |
