I seem to be having an issue with gimp 2.8. It works fine whenever I'm root - i.e. sudo - but whenever I run it as... me, I get an "Unable to open a test swap file" error. I googled it, but all I've found was a headache. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, changing the folders in Preferences, but neither worked. Help!

I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 and I have no intention of getting the Windows version.

Did you have the same issue with previous versions? If not, you could revert to the last version that worked, for now.

Just speculating based on a 5-minute read of /etc/gimp/2.0/gimprc, what happens if you try any of the following (as non-superuser)?

GIMP2_DIRECTORY=/tmp/ gimp-2.8

GIMP2_DIRECTORY=~ gimp-2.8

No. Then again, I just started using Ubuntu 13.04 as well. It's a long story

Hmmm... Looks like I don't have that directory

Well, shit. It didn't seem to work. I think the problem has somehting to do with that controllerrc program. It doesn't seem to want to open for a standard user.
And before you ask, I did try to change controllerrc's permissions and that didn't work

Uh... which one? /tmp/ or your home directory? Whichever of them you don't have, you'd be in pretty deep shit, Linux-wise.

"/tmp/gimp-2.8" Didn't have that directory. No matter, I think my installation of Raring Ringtail got screwed up somehow. I'm having trouble updating it. I figure that might be part of the problem

He didn't say "/tmp/gimp-2.8" he said "/tmp/ gimp-2.8" (notice the space that is there).

Crap, didn't see that space. I have the folder, but whenever I change the directory of the swap file and reset the program, it goes back to being blank. Do I have to edit controllerrc manually or something?

I am not sure what this controllerrc thing you are talking about is. Have you tried running GIMP with the command I suggested or not?

I have. It says that it needs to reset in order for the change to take hold, but when I do, it's back to square one. The error just pops up again.

Never mind, screw it. I got the unofficial one for Windows. There's probably something wrong with my Ubuntu computer. That's probably why it's behaving irrationally.

I don't why you even bothered with the linux version to begin with. :/
Next time if something won't work in linux but a windows version use it instead.
Less time wasted, less problems with the install.

What, are you a Windows evangelist now?

I never had that problem before upgrading Raring Ringtail or whatever it was called, except the time when I decided to upgrade. That's why. I enjoy using a variety of OS'es, and I initially thought that GIMP was Unix exclusive.
