Quick question, do you prefer to keep discussions here or on your YT-vids? I've posted some comments on YT, but I think it's a mess since you have several vids and it feels like I'm spamming. Thanks for reading the comments and taking my suggestions, though. Looking forward for more updates.

Since you started posting I've felt the urge to look into smb3 asm, so I look into it last night, it's tough though - I haven't been cracking assembly for over 2 years, but I'll get into it.

Is the pumpkin powerup for boo mario?
Either way, the map looks awesome. Also, will you add more details to it? IMO the barren ground looks plain, or will you be using a combination of plain and detailed? (like some dots on the tile, to simulate grass)

Just make sure it's balanced. I like your golden leaf. First I thought it was the same as the shining leaf in Super Mario 3D Land, but that is lame so I like this better.

(BTW (a bit OT I know), what's your best tip on making room for asm-hacks in smb3dissasm.? Is there an easy way to extend the space? As of now, it's pretty hard to add code and successfully compile)

Whatever file you're adding the code to, look for "unused". southbird marked out chunks of code that are unused. simply comment that code with (use ; to comment code) and compile and test to make sure the code you removed doesn't cause problems. Do note, the rom is still pretty packed so you may have to give up parts of the game for your own stuff (for example I removed all laser code and Kuribo's shoe code).

This is looking pretty good so far.

I'd like to make one small suggestion (I don't know whether or not you've already thought of this, but it was in Luigi vs. Mario, so...), and that is to add some sort of indicator to either the level or the world map that lets the player know if he already collected the hammer brother coin in a particular level or not. Since the levels on the map (at least presently) are non-descript pipes and I imagine later worlds will get much larger (not to mention the game is based around exploration and could become much more complex), I think this would go a long way toward creating a more enjoyable, less tedious experience (plus completionists like me just love to see something that acknowledges our efforts! ).

Well, that's all. Back to the shadows I go. I wish you luck with this project, Dahrk; it's already shaping up to be better than the original, and I still consider that game to be the overall best Mario 3 hack to date, so PLEASE oust yourself!

Mineyl: I've actually thought about this suggestion and this is going to be pretty though to implement. The problem being since there's no level "completion", it's hard to know when a coin is collected for a specific level (it uses x/y coordinates as flags at the moment). I will think of someway to indicate it as it will definitely be irritating to those looking for the last coins without knowing where to find them.



The start of the "Challenge" levels begins. Challenge levels are special levels with strange rules in order to complete, inspired by the original "Desert Dares" in Mario Adventure, these levels are meant to be oddities and somewhat short. They aren't required, but if you complete them, you get a lot of rewards.

So for this first one, you play SMB's 1-1 with an extended ending. The catch? The right button is constantly held down. Left doesn't work at all. It's these kinds of "bizarre rules" I'll use for these kinds of levels, just to have fun.


Edit: Well it's getting close to that time. I'm going to need some dedicated beta testers to start playing through the hack and note bugs, make suggestions, judge difficulty etc. If you're interested, send me a PM. I'm only going be able to pick a few, but I need people who will play regular updates.

Mario in his frozen state


When hit by an iceball, Mario will be pushed back and frozen. He has to press A several times to come out of it. During his frozen state he CAN get hurt! If he's get with another ice ball by frozen, his "unfreeze" counter is reset and he has to press jump even more.

You got all of the levels of World 1 done already? Not bad. I can tell you are working on this around the clock. It is fun, but it sucks at the same time when you have to go to work, or when you don't actually have the time to do the amount of hacking you want to do. Well, as long as you are having fun, that is important. I like that World 2 map.
