The weirdest thing happened. I recently updated from Windows XP to Windows 7, but I'm getting less frames per second in Source games. Anyone know anything I can due to optimize it? I've already started using a non aero Windows theme, closed out other windows, and lowered the settings.

Did you switch from 32 bit to 64 bit?

Quite a lot about the graphics stack changed between the two OSes. You could try downloading latest DX redistributables as a ditch effort of sorts, but chances are you won't be able to recover the FPS. That sort of thing is expectable when you update though... by how much did the framerate decrease?

Only by a bit, but a significant enough amount to notice. I'm not sure if I switched from 32 to 64 bit, Lunaria.

Well, are you running other programs in the background? I noticed that graphics cards like AMD tend to downclock itself if browsers like firefox is running for whatever strange reason. Are you using fullscreen, windowed or "noborder" mode?

I'm running nothing in the background. Even tried closing Steam. I run in windowed mode.

Well here's my graphics card. Is this bad or what? I'm not really very informed much about hardware.

Is your GPU driver up to date?

I know it's a old post, but try running fullscreen. A lot of people is reporting decreased FPS in windwoed mode.

That could be it. Isn't it harder for the PC to run it if the pixels don't match up with the screen?

It's really more that the GPU spends time rendering things that isn't the game.

I also noticed that if you are running Firefox and a game at the same time, sometimes the video card keeps itself at the "idle clock" which is ok for hardware rendered desktop applications but possible laggy for games. I suspect same quirk is true for other hardware rendering browsers, which is all of them now.

Under X11, at least when using a compositing window manager, there is that whole concept of "redirection" where windowed applications have to be rendered to a separate buffer which is then rendered into the window by the compositor, causing overhead, rather than being rendered to the screen directly. I am not sure to what degree this applies under Windows, but something similar might be at work there...
