A Natchez, Mississippi man was awakened by a loud sound. Thinking someone was trying to break into his home be grabbed his .357 Magnum handgun, cocked the gun, and went to investigate. According to police, as the man approached the kitchen he could still hear a noise and became nervous and unintentionally discharged the gun. He shot himself in the right foot near his pinkie toe.
The man was able to drive himself to the hospital. His condition has not been released.

Accidental self injury or death and injury or even death to others happen every day due to improper use of guns in the US. Why do people who own guns seem to have so much trouble keeping them safely? Or ... why do we permit people who seem to have a rather low IQ and irresponsible habits the right to bear arms?

do we need more conditions and regulations around gun ownership?

let's discuss.

This is your classic difficult discussion. I would agree that some people who do have a gun probably shouldn't. But then there's also the whole 2nd amendment right thing. I would be all for mandatory training sessions for gun owners. Maybe once every few months or so, you have to retake a safety training course and an actual shooting course or something.

Amendments can be repealed or altered by subsequent amendments, so it's not like they are fixed forever. They can also be changed through judicial rulings that would alter their interpretation without having to legislatively alter the literal text.

The other problem is that the second amendment's original intent seems to be designed around bearing arms as part of a militia unit to repeal foreign invaders and insurgencies, though recent Supreme Court decisions have extended it for the purpose of home defense.

The type of guns that are universally agreed through the US by state and city ordinances are adequate for home defense but some states/cities permit the ownership of assault rifles which are a little extreme for a home invasion scenario.

I agree that gun owners should basically need to take an extended mandatory training session and subsequent retrainings every year (perhaps 2-3x a year).

I mentioned assault rifles but to be fair... most accidental shootings seem to occur with handguns while an individual is 'cleaning' the weapon and the firearm discharges....so perhaps these individuals would have benefited from remedial training...

I always thought the founders put in the 2nd amendment as a means of protection from the government itself, not just home invasions and the like. I heard from some teacher I had in the past that the founders of the constitution didn't think the constitution would last more than 100 years or so, so they included the 2nd amendment so people would be allowed to have guns in their home to defend themselves when the government got to powerful and it was time for a good old fashioned revolt. But I guess that's sort of the beside the point.

I'll agree to this.
I believe gun proliferation is beneficial to some degree though. If everyone has an equal ability to kill everyone else, it reduces the amount of control any one person can achieve by owning a gun in the first place.

They've been around long enough now that they will never fully go away, even if they are outlawed. The next best thing to eliminating the threat is flooding the market.

Even if guns were outlawed the Us wouldn't be able to control it. We would have a second prohibition.
