I feel so dumb. I totally missed both of those on my first playthrough, but I played it again today and found both of those upgrades. Ridley and Mother Brain would have been a lot easier if I had known a charge beam existed. This whole time I thought you just had to aim your super missiles and missiles very carefully to beat those guys.

I think I succeeded at stumbling upon the charge beam when I played it, but am not sure what the Spring Ball even is. My memory of everything to do with Super Metroid is positively fuzzy; the amount of backtracking made it hard to even keep track what areas were actually newly accessible and what areas I just hadn't visited since the beginning...

The Spring Ball just lets you jump while in the morph ball. But as far as I can tell, it's not required for anything. The only time I ever actually needed to use it was to escape the room you find it in in the first place.

Heh, same thing happened to me in Cave story. I thought I had everything, but apparently forgot to obtain whimsical star. Which I also forgot the last few times I played the games too, and I'm already past the point of no return.

I remember it took me a few years (2-3?) to figure out how to get the secret levels in Yoshi Island too. I didn't really try to get 100 on every level. Now I always 100 a level in the first try.

I think I still haven't seen all the secret levels in YI... 100% clearance on everything surpassed the attention span I had available as a kid.

Now that you mention what the Spring Ball does, though, it does sound very familiar after all... I wonder if I got it after all and didn't register the name. I spent enough time being confused as to where to proceed that I might well have picked up all the items while flailing about by pure accident.

I don't think I've 100%'d Yoshi's Island either. I know I came close though. I think World 5-bonus is what kept me from finishing though. Stupid Kamek and your invincible dive-bombing of doom. Why can't Yoshi's Helicopter mode come with heat-seeking missiles or something?

I seem to recall that out of the levels in the SNES Yoshi Island, World 5 secret was easily the hardest on to finish.

GBA version added a bonus level for each world, although I don't recall them being as hard, but they do contain some stuff that was unused in the SNES original (like homing bullet bills) so still pretty neat. Currently replaying the GBA version on my 3DS.

I never managed to 100% World 4-6, so I haven't seen their secret levels.

That being said, the game's later areas are hard regardless :s

World 4 have probably my favorite secret level in Yoshi Island. So I suggest really try to finish that level to 100%.

I only bother to unlock the World-4 extra so I can get that Bonus matching game and get tons of items. The Extra level itself I wasn't too crazy about. I've never been a big fan of maze levels like that.

In my opinion maze levels shouldn't be forced in platforming games. A bonus level as one would be fine though. When I play a platformer I don't intend on solving a maze.

Haha, I loved the Maze level when I found it the first time as it takes a very long time to figure out how to solve it too (involving a mechanic that is only used on that level). If it wasn't optional or if it was a level occurring more than once though, yeah I'd be pissed.

Mother brain won't stand up long to single plasma beam charge shots.
Even spazer beam would do in her first mode of battling.
Also spring ball isn't needed if you can bomb jump some.
Then again the acid may have a different way of handling you when your high jump boots dont cut it fast enough.

"besides I hate the spring ball anyway"

It took me years to find out Mega Man 2's Atomic Fire can be charged up. Even better when you can 1-hit-kill Wood Man with it fully charged.

lol really ? most players catch on to that trick when they hold the B button for too long and launch out a burst of fire.
Oh well, I guess some of us wont notice the most easiest things in VG after 2+ years later in life.
