I hate to say this, but, why not make a facebook group and link back to here? Mayhaps branching out can bring people here? I dono. I'm trying to help.
As it happens, there's already a facebook group here. And coincidentally enough, Emuz posted a link to the board there on Monday.

I personally wouldn't want to use RPG Maker. RPGs aren't heavily physics based and therefore wouldn't be too difficult to program. You might find some physics in battle animations, but that's probably all. It's been many years since I've used RPG maker so I don't know if much has changed with it by now, but I remember being frustrated by some of it's limitations (I wasn't too fond of Game Maker either).
I think RPG Maker's primary advantage is that it's easy to work with. Virtually anyone could create a map and detail it nicely without much technical knowledge. Also, RPGs tend to be more story-intensive than platformers, and considering the amount of creativity at the board, storyline could easily become a strength of the project.

Well, it would definately be an easy and quick way to get started. I'm not in any rush myself because I've got some other things to do first, and for a while now I've been more interested in platformers. Maybe it would be a good way to get something started that people will feel confident about actually going somewhere. I think my interests would involve programming (which of course is obsolete with RPG Maker), and maybe designing some dungeons and other map related things.

As I said in a chat to Blackhole89, it's not quantity but quality for me. And I do not mind this being our closeknit corner as a forum, even if the activity might not necessarily be as high as bigger forums.

If someone who actually has facebook and friends who might possibly be interested in a site like this, it certainly wouldn't hurt...
It would be fruitless in my attempt since everyone I know are either not into the stuff this board covers, or already knows about it.

In the end, lack of activity does, however, quite naturally discourage people who want quantity and speed of feedback from posting.

I like this new theme blackhole89! It feels refreshing, and is easy on the eyes. I didn't know until I read your post that this was meant to convey "despair." I felt like this board was due for a theme change anyway.

How I feel about the board? I still check it every now and then. I would rather it stay to be honest with you. As you said, there are lot of factors that are the reason why this board has been slow, but it can always turn around.

People who loved ROM hacking, probably don't have the time anymore. Real life gets in the way. Not to mention the toughness of the world economy is making it hard on a lot of people to do the things they want to do, they are struggling just to survive.

I am optimistic. I think this place could get very active again. I say that based on what I did for TEK Hacks back in the day. We were dead just like this board, and I went around, recruited members who loved ROM hacking, and asked them to join, and a few months later, before you know it, TEK Hacks was booming. It was so awesome, and I was so happy!

Also, as the new generation of kids grows up, they started with systems like the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and they probably don't know much about the retro systems like we do, so they are not even interested in them, much less ROM hacking.

I say keep this place open. Just for the sake of the ROM hackers who enjoy doing what they love doing.

As for the flame wars, the trolling, all that other negative crap, I never cared for it, even on the old Acmlm boards or anywhere else, but you deal with that when this place gets busier again. Don't encourage it, just be more relaxed about things like "one word" posts.

There have been times on other boards where I felt like making a post just to say "NICE!" because it was so awesome what I saw. If I did that here, I would get a warning for making a one-word post. A post is post. Posts that are considered really out of place should get the warning. Moderators should use good judgement.

Perhaps this forum could use some cleaning up for the New Year. Delete all of the posts in the Landfill. Who wants to see that? It promotes negativity. In fact, maybe we shouldn't have a Landfill forum. It might put off a new person who comes to the board. I don't know, it's just a guess. Only keep things positive. I wouldn't display trash threads for people to see.

Some board fix ups, like adding page numbers at the top of the forum pages, adding a Favorite Post button, to favorite a post that you really like, encourage post layouts, have contests for post layouts, keep things fun and positive. And please, no more of that random Dodongo that appears in the upper-left corner. It's really old already.

We have the Way Back Machine. Take a look back at what made Acmlm so great to begin with, and make it work here. We can have all of the activity in the world again. That, I really do believe can happen.

So, that being said, Happy New Year!

I also suggested the cleanup. The forums and their categories have been slightly modified and I believe we will be changing and removing other forums to make way for new ones.

As for ROM Hacking, I sort of do, but I can't really call myself a ROM hacker in its intended meaning. I prefer the use of the editor which mostly boils down to your ability to navigate around an editor as well as level design, instead of the nitty gritty mechanics and inner workings of a ROM. I have been known to make workarounds for the problems that arise but when I don't have the skills I rely on the community for help. That's what will take a huge hit if we lose that section. So, what I suggest needs to be done here is what was done for TEK back in the day; recruit some hackers and hopefully more hackers and casual people will follow.

Well, I'm very new here, only joined a week ago.

However, I think that is a good perspective.

This board does feel very closed and I felt like I better have something monumental to post if I was going to post. I never saw myself as spending a lot of time here, but I have popped in every day of the last week.

I feel like if the rules on posting and threads were a bit more lax it might be more inviting. I moderate over on another forum where I am very active, It's the day to day talk that keeps people coming back and not necessarily the subject matter of the site.

I really hope you can keep this place alive, it is a great resource.

I liked this board because it has age, not only that:

It really helps, and also people gave me advice and memories even back when it was called Acmlm board.

Sure I had my moments, but on the site's final legs, I hope everyone will move on to a new Romhacking forum.

When this site goes, I'll stay more at NESDEV, I may also be at other sites as well.

P.S. Thanks a million for everyone's contributions!

Isnt it necessary to add more ROM-Hacking forums on a specific game? It's like adding SMB3-SMAS hacking topic with only myself moderating the forum with my everyday activity. Things go quickly and die!

Same with adding Mega Man hacking (which I don't suggest to add here), forums like Rockman Perfect Memories has such fangaming topics to bring their own people with a favorite character's hero.

That's one of those reason why Pokémon hacking forum fails. I hope these new forums are worth bringing people here.

Now, can we all please at least make an effort to assume good faith...

Anyway, thanks for all the feedback so far; although it doesn't really seem like our problems are fundamentally out of the way, the last few days went comparatively well.

One point of contention that seems to be a recurring theme is that the board doesn't seem particularly welcoming to newbies. I'm a bit at loss as to what the concrete reason for that perception is, still; even undertaking to redouble our efforts to appear friendly and open, it seems likely that we would completely miss the point and improve nothing if we just were to do it blindly. What would be concrete things to attempt to improve in that regard? Kestegs, and everyone else who came out of an existence of lurking or similar to voice this opinion, I would be particularly interested to hear your take on the problem.

Hamtaro126: The thread was not meant as an announcement of closure, merely of the real possibility if things don't improve...

try making Hacking Tutorials for noobs ( like me) with Lazy Shell or hacking nes roms, like Contra.

Another option to increase visits would like to make a group at Facebook or Twitter and adding friends to it.

How about just hiding the Land Fill off the main page? That way if users really want to find something that was trashed, they still can, but you won't see it unless you're looking for something.

If Acmlmboard had subforum support I would just hide them as subforums myself.

Oh and, the https on the IRC links is just silly. ._.

Yeah, I'd actually click on links in the IRC if it didn't give my web browser an authentication aneurism every time because you're not actually using certificates like you're supposed to.

It's simply because it is - Romhacking in general is an unforgiving landscape for newbies. The remaining users have no patience to be guiding and/or helpful to new users. The social forums are still cliquey (they're social forums so no surprise there). The IRC is even cliquier.

Coupled with the fact that the board is no longer the go-to speciality place (RHDN covers general/translation, SMWC, Pokecommunity and its ilk cover the big favourites) and it's not especially appealing. There's certainly not much that actually encourages people to want to hang out here.

I don't post that much here either anymore - threads in romhacking are largely ignored. I know I only update and comment out of stubborn headedness to actually finish things.

Removed the https from the IRC links.

Not sure what there is to gain from hiding the Landfill from the main page...
