im hoping you dont take down the site, because i literally have this board set as my "homepage"

i always am here because of the romhacking boards, this is defintely the best place to come to for people to dicuss their rom hacks and download any that people uploaded on the acmlm board uploader.

I really love the download counter so you get to see how much rom hacks and tools have been downloaded, it's really really useful.

And there are plenty of annoymous japanese people who come here to check the romhacking boards too. (the megaman community in particular)

i really hope this place stays, i dont want to see it go.

I have only been here for about a year or less but I must say this board is the best iv'e ever come across for ROM hacking. This Board makes everything Rom hacking related so much easier. It will be sad to see this Board go because iv'e learned so much from it and met a lot of regular comers to this sight that have helped me through my goal to master The Lazy Shell Editor for Super Mario RPG in the Super Mario RPG Hacking thread. I am not sure what to do about keeping The Board from being shut down except to advertise. I think if we advertise The Board on the Internet we might be able to spark interest in other ROM hackers and programmers who haven't noticed The Board. Its a long shot, but if everyone who still cares about The Board chips in and tries there their best to get the word out we might just be able to save it! If anyone at all thinks this is a good idea in anyway, shape, or form please PM me and we will put together a plan of action. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Digikid195

First of all, thanks for all the encouraging posts... however, I fear most of the replies seem to slightly miss the point. It's not that I'm trying to say I will take down the board unless enough people tell me not to in a sufficiently convincing tone; rather, I have come to believe that we can not go on as things are at the moment and am asking for suggestions, possibly of a radical kind, for changes to make to the board, staff composition etc. that could plausibly reverse this trend of inactivity. A simple "please keep going, I'd hate to see it go as long as somebody drops by and posts once in a week or so" is not really satisfactory, and while I would see to it that archives are put up in one way or the other, I believe that the board has deserved a better end than one of being gradually forgotten completely.

Also, most of the views are from a ridiculous onslaught of bots that has been going on since the time of posting. They seem to like everything that's linked from the front page to a creepy degree.

I shall say that I don't want the board to be terminated. I'm kinda here for ROM hacking (even though barely anyone cares about SM64DS), but mostly because this board feels kinda like a home to me...

I also have to say that I disagree with the 'minimal bans' measures. There are certain kinds of people that can't be allowed on a messageboard (before you take offence for that, this is not aimed at anyone here). If the board turns into a huge spamfest, I'll be forced to leave. I don't want to post a thread about, say, video cards, to get flaming/trolling/viagra/WOW gold in response.

I think we should look at what's the trend of the internet in 2012, and follow that. Though, it's hard to say. It appears that most of the trend is Facebook and other social networking bullshit. I don't want Board2 to become a social networking site, and it may just not be possible, as it seems that in that domain, it's a monopoly or almost, you have to be large or noone will care about you.

We could try and make Board2 the place for next-gen hacking, such as hacking the newest consoles (3DS, PSVita, and soon enough Wii U), or hacking games meant for these consoles (NSMBWii, SMG1/2, and soon enough Mario Land)... all of that while retaining the nostalgia and retro hacking (SMB, SMW...).

Otherwise, I don't have much ideas to revive the board. And I may be repeating myself here, but in my opinion, dropping all the rules and letting everyone in is a bad idea. If too many spamming dumbasses appear, the board will turn into a huge spamfest and good members will leave out of disgust.

Edit- another potential method of bringing in activity I just thought of, could be to add cool features to the board system. The 'bonus coins' thing I saw after I posted this, reminded me that having a functional battle system might be interesting... idk though.

Coming to here was my purpose because of hobby activity. After all 5 years, I've became more mature. And I have to regret all my mistakes. For me, I have a lost of interest of my own forum but I didn't want it to shut it down. It hasn't been popular in a first place. I'm still using this board for news activity reasons. Then my Facebook Fan Page sticks in since August 2010 and I make the news based on both ROM-Hacking and my other hobbies.

People most likely to respect me because of the number of romhacks I created. Now I'm paying all newbies and veterans a price.

You, and many others, want this place to stay alive. Well, that's great and all, but it's not simply enough to want to want. Suggest something to do to drive activity.

In IRC I suggested some forum restructuring. Drop the bad/pointless forums, re-categorize the existing ones, and make new forum descriptions. Even rename a few of them.

I also feel that submitting my opinion on certain matters would serve to condemn me in the end since it would appear that because I'm staff on Kafuka my opinion might be biased.

I would have been more interested in sticking around this place if there was an nicer atmosphere.

I believe there is some value in uniting people with different ideals/values/posting styles as long as we can get past the notion that inconvenient people can just be purged if only you manage to get more like-minded ones in power; whether others do or don't, I can't tell, but if they do, I think board2's claim to greater commitment in that regard is plausible.

One can have this, but let's be clear, when people go around and call each other names and troll a whole lot, you (aka, moderation team) need to put your foot down and say no.

The reason I left and the reason I mainly lurk even when KP got me back is that the community is simply way to hostile for me to give a shit about being here.

A board is distinct from a social networking site by design, but, looking at other forums, it seems evident that, in principle, it is still possible to provide something that fundamentally is an alternative way of social interaction (as opposed to the one championed by Facebook) and not be completely ignored. The question just is how to go about it.

That's easily said, but you can't just proclaim it to be a board for so-and-so and then expect someone to actually come around and talk about or do it here....

Otherwise, I don't have much ideas to revive the board. And I may be repeating myself here, but in my opinion, dropping all the rules and letting everyone in is a bad idea. If too many spamming dumbasses appear, the board will turn into a huge spamfest and good members will leave out of disgust.
Actual spam was meant to be covered by the "disruptive" clause. Sorry if that wasn't sufficiently clear.

This seems to be a sentiment that is expressed rather frequently, and I do realise that it has been a problem. However, my observations from the past few years are essentially to the effect that there seemed to be a small core group of long-term members who keep being involved in hostilities - either being primarily on the giving or on the receiving end of them, but still universally considering the continued presence of the other side unacceptable. This seemed to contribute a lot to the perpetuation of inactivity, as the only options were to either dismiss or even punish the members of said core group, causing outrage among the "oldbies", or to dismiss or even punish the other faction involved, causing people who are not part of said group to be alienated. I am inclined to think that said core group mostly making Kafuka their new home might well be a chance for improvement in that regard.

This sounds like a good idea to me- having dead forums sitting right on the front page (no posts in Debate or Officer's Club since August?) is probably something that contributes to the idea that the forum is "dead".

Since the sprawling tumbleweed has been mentioned several times, as a first step, the following sections have been closed:

Debate
Officer's Club
Story/SimBattle Forum
Entertainment

Please make it known if you think more should go, or you see some urgent reason why any of them should be resurrected. Topics that previously would have gone into either of them may as well go into General Chat.

Not necessarily more that should go, but I believe Modern Art and Writing should be merged, as well as Hard-/Software and Programming.

If we are cleaning out the forums, I'd say the romhacking releases and SMW hacking forums should go.

Should anyone want (and I'm sure they already do) a bigger focus on SMW hacking then there is SMWC. The releases section is pointless as releases could be in the normal one anyway. If one would want a romhacking database, having it in forum form may not exactly be the most optimal.

The fraxy section seems kinda empty as well and could be closed and be used as an archive.

Hardware/software and programming might as well be just one forum.

Many of the stickied threads in all the section should have a look over to see what is really needed anymore.

Refactoring any of the ROM hacking sections is a bit problematic because they have high archive value that goes beyond the possibility of any new activity happening there. However, if anyone wants to clean up stickies and is reasonably committed and trustworthy, please let me know. We have a notable shortage of global moderators at the moment.

I'unno, forum restructuring usually does shit for helping a dead forum.. but it seems to be one of the things people try to do regardless. Personally, and from what I've heard from others, it can make what little oldbie feelings that are left just get wiped away with the restructured forum. This isn't really a big deal to some people, or even something to really take into consideration... but it somehow seemed pertinent to mention :/

For me, it all just seems to be a matter of activity, and how you're going to manage that activity. And drawing people in may be good and all, but it wouldn't hurt for people who are here to get moving themselves and shuffling their feet all around :p Hell, I'd even be interested in coming out of a lurk. There just never seemed a place for it.

(as a note, I was here for the rom hacking all along though :e )

To me, the logical progression from here is that we should ask bh to throw together a separate feature on the board for hacks on the main page. Something sort of like what romhacking.net or smwcentral uses to display hacks. As far as moderation goes, you could just stick a captcha on it for now, and not worry about genuinely awful hacks seeping in until it happens.

Ya know what else would be cool? Stretch out the PoRA just a little, and include whatever is on the calendar for that day in the box. Tomorrow is NightKev's birthday, and I wouldn't have known if I hadn't checked the calendar before this post.
That sort of thing helps to build community too.

I suppose I could help clean shit up if you need any volunteers, just don't expect me to be very active very often unless the whole feel get any better in here.

But hey, I am willing to make a try to resurrect this place if others are as well.
