~zkip:
Yesterday this hit me and I just wasn't able to get it out of my head today. I would like to discuss the effects of music to the brain. I don't consider myself educated... heck I dropped out after sophomore year in high school, so bear with me please. It's quite commonly known that music can relieve stress and create an atmosphere for you. It can set the mood for just about anything. Everyone knows this. So, yesterday I played a song out of the blue and it's really amazing the array of emotions I went through after just the first 10 seconds of playing.

It's strange because it happened BEFORE the actual lyrics came in. The memories and emotions aren't exactly tied in with the song, I haven't heard this song enough to tie it in with anything at all. It just reminds me of summer and my summer love and the events that happened, and I go into deep reminisce mode. It's also strange that, with me, this doesn't happen with pictures or home movies.. just music. What exactly is the element that comes into play here that causes me to react this way to just music? I have no idea.

I've also done this with songs I've never heard at all before. Some songs just remind me of certain people, times, and the likes, and I start to reminisce. There's got to be something in my brain that causes me to react stronger to songs (regardless of hearing them before or not) than with pictures, etc.

So, board, what's your thoughts on the matter? Have you ever done this? If not, what object causes you to go into "deep reminisce mode"?

I believe that music causes conscious and subconscious recognition of memories (such as people, times, and likes as you say) thus invoking emotional responses. Excitability, happiness, and sadness being some of the common ones, emotional responses can also be attributed to chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin being released. Both of these chemicals are known to induce feelings of well-being.

The rhythm and the beat of music itself can possibly enhance these feelings as it exercises the brain as it tries to process the sound.

This is all just an observational speculative statement, I don't have any source whatsoever for it.

I will sometimes listen to alternative music while playing a game on the computer. In lieu of the game's actual soundtrack.

Every single time I listen to those tunes afterward... especially if I had one on loop through an entire gaming session... I will have memories of playing that game.

It bugs me. It really bugs me.

Also sad songs are sad. Very sad. Especially when I can't help but imagine scenes that fit them.

A lot of the time a song brings back vague memories when I'm hearing it the first time. It's just the atmosphere. Sometimes it's mysterious. Sometimes it's depressing. Sometimes it's happy. Sometimes it's nostalgic.

It's not as strange as you would think.

I've heard of things similar to that from other sources of inspiration.
