Edit: oh yeah, forgot my main point. I think due to the reasons listed above, it will fade away like Guitar Hero and the entire music game genre did.

Ah yes, the biggest selling genre is going to fade away.

Call of Duty may fade away as a franchise, but the genre will never disappear.

Here's the thing: Guitar Hero was repetitive. The only different thing in every single game was the tracklist. This is why it died - you were paying about 3x the actual value of the songs just to play them, then 2x the game price in equipement.

Shooters are generally cheap time killers.

That said, Call of Duty is OK. I loved MW1, but I feel lately the newer games just haven't been as enjoyable. The campaign in the recent installment is okay but a lot less actual play. It feels more cinematic.

I kinda wish more missions like the Russian bombing in MW2 were added. Those sort of mix-ins are what make the genre feel more fresh and the games more exciting - playing from the opposite perspective of the game.

Guys I wasn't saying all FPS games will disappear. I was saying our generic military shooters probably will be less mainstream.

Not going to happen. Like ever.

It's funny that this thread has been more about why or why not hate CoD and no one really answered what their favorite CoD game was.

Yes, that's why I apologized to Googie for ruining his thread by starting a discussion about why people who hate Cod or any GMTS do so.

Look at once very popular genres such a fighting games, music games, 2D platformers. Yes you still see them, but they aren't at the top of the market.

Even in the FPS genre, there are overarching themes in the majority of games for a few years before a new one takes place. From Doom, there were demonic/medieval/fantasy shooters, from Quake II, there were sci-fi shooters, and from Call of Duty, there are military shooters. Just need a new massively-popular game with a new theme to change that.

I thought for awhile that there was going to be a flood of cartoonic games ala Team Fortress 2 a, Battlefield Heroes and etc but it didn't happen.

Well let's see here. I pre-ordered MW3, beat the campaign, then played multiplayer for a few days, then went back to playing TF2 and haven't touched it since. In my opinion, the COD series sucks (compared to TF2) because of so many things.

TF2 is exactly the best game out there either. I played TF2 for about a week, but then stopped because it is extremely unbalanced. New players get simple guns, but people who either pay cash or play a long time getter better guns. Now is that fair?

Weapons in TF2 is worth so little it's actually hilarious. You should get everything really easy in trading if you just bother with it a bit, or just use tf2warehouse (ignore the mannco store for weapons seriously, not worth it).

Also no, I disagree with bought guns being better than the "simple guns". I still use the default weapons in many cases as I consider them way way better. The best rocket launcher IMO is still the default one, I still just use the plain shotgun on soldier, I still play demoman with just default weapons too. No weapons are meant to be upgrades to it's vanilla counterparts.

COD 5 world at war, I played the demo 2 years ago, and I have wanted one for the pc.
But I'm stuck wit COD 2, very popular and worth a sale of 22.00, but people dont even want to cough up 9.00 for it ?

I think cod black ops, fucked up the series after its initial release.
I see no point of having to have that game and still be left dry after playing it ? 0_0

My favorite was probably United Offensive. The larger maps and addition of vehicles was pretty fun. Also not a big fan of the regenerating health in the later games (amongst other things).

I like arena shooters, and Unreal Tournament has always been my favorite. I should probably give TF2 another try, since the UT population is pretty small.

My old roommate had mentioned the Tribes series to me back in the day. Based on what I saw in some gameplay videos, it seems right up my alley.

Sorta off topic, anyone here play(ed) ET:Quake Wars?

TF2 is free so it can't possibly hurt. A lot of my online friends grabbed TF2 after it came out as F2P and I actually played it a lot more often since there were more people online.
