Posted by Xkeeper I tried JPEG and it was completely obliterated. Then I saved it as a PNG file and compared the two. Smaller Size yet NO PIXEL DIFFERENTIAL. Works for me. ____________________ What FF7: Advent Children Character Are You? |

Save your PNGs and JPEG/JPGs in IrfanView.
That way you can set the compression. |

Flurry #&postrank& (using Photoshop 6)
PNG 24bit (no loss) = 13.9k PNG 8bit, 256 colors = 7.8k PNG 8bit, 64 colors = 5.6k JPG at 100 quality = 8.5k JPG at 80 quality = 4.8k They all look good enough too, there's no reason to use BMP ever (and just because most people have broadband now doesn't mean this shouldn't matter anymore, bandwidth still counts) Posted by Koitenshin +∞It was going to be 60x60 and 20k until Xkeeper convinced me to set it higher, it was also 60x__ on the old one until Xkeeper changed it, so thank him for even having 100x100 Posted by HyperHackerThis could probably be fixed without using file extensions, they're just stored that way to make it simpler to get the file (only needing the user id) ... all that's stored in the database is a "usepic" field (0 or 1), changing that to the file type could fix it ... And remember there's the 60x60 one for the memberlist as well, automatically resized (and saved as PNG) from whatever you upload ____________________ |

Well I thank XK for having it set to 100p². 60p² is way too small to use or make any decent avatars. Not enough detail. And I might have to look into "procuring" Photoshop. ____________________ What FF7: Advent Children Character Are You? |

Posted by HyperHackerPosted by JeshuaFixed. I suggested IrfanView because its lite. As is XnView. MS Paint is decent, but not for saving files. Photoshop is good, but not for converting avatars. |

I don't convert avatars. I make them. Sometimes I make them from scratch, other times I have to heavily edit them in Paint. I still need some decent image editing software. *holds out hat to buy self a legal copy of Paintshop Pro* ____________________ What FF7: Advent Children Character Are You? |

Posted by Koitenshin +∞ Then Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, The Gimp, or Pixel. But for people who ARE converting, that tip is for them. |

Posted by HyperHacker Animated avatars seem to only display one frame continuously on the memberlist. I didn't know those were separate images on that page, I thought maybe they were just resized. I remember on the first incarnation the avatars on the memberlist were just forced into 60*60, which looked really bad in the case of non-square avatars. I rarely do anything beyone basic image manipulation (like taking a portion of a screenshot or other image), as I don't have the brain for that sort of stuff at all. I use the GIMP because it's free, and Paint tends to mess up the colours on images if you don't want a .bmp file. |

Flurry #&postrank& Animated GIF's lose their animation when resized (not much I can do about it), and transparency is lost, but it's saved as a separate 60x60 image for a few reasons
- Doesn't need to be resized everytime, only when changed - Looks better since it's antialiased - No horizontal/vertical stretch if it's not square (but a black border instead) - Smaller filesize (at least when it's originally bigger or animated) I didn't keep it at 100x100 since that stretched it up too much, and it looked too empty without the images like Xkeeper did before For the 100x100 image, animated GIF's work because they're saved as is, at least if they're not over the size limit ... ____________________ |

Posted by Koitenshin +∞ Few browsers (if any) support APNG or MNG, and besides, animated PNGs don't have a good compression (as opposed to animated GIFs), so I would not use those. |
