The only thing that stands in the way of the scenario in the first picture in principle is the circumstance that by definition, getting the mirror far enough away to see scenes 20 years past through it and the light getting back from its position would require at least 20 years. If past generations had placed such a mirror far enough away (and if we had telescopes that are good enough, and there weren't problems due to diffusion of light) or it occurred naturally, e.g. as light bending around an object of high gravity, this would be possible in principle. See also this.

Sooner (but probably much, much later, if we don't all die) science will enable us to use gravitational lensing to peer into the past at Earth at X time (dependent on the sufficiently distorting star) to solve mysteries and show videos to children.
