From International Business Times

Thousands of people playing an Internet game called Foldit successfully formulated a structure for a key enzyme related to the development of the AIDS virus, coming up with a model that had consistently eluded scientists.

By using a game developed by researchers at the University of Washington, players were able to come up with a viable structure for a protein that is crucial to the early development of AIDS. Foldit allows users to assemble potential proteins out of different molecular building blocks, and video game players ended up accomplishing what scientists could not.

I read about this a while back (say a few days) and I was thoroughly impressed with it. I'm sure the only difference is the approach. I hope scientists continue to focus on obtaining the answer needed through whatever means, even if it questions their own ego. But then they wouldn't be true scientists if they let ego get in the way, would they? Kudos to everyone involved.

I feel I should get the obligatory nerd joke out of the way:
Gamers also contribute to stopping the spread of AIDs through rigorously practiced abstinence.

Anyway, I think it's good there's a way to put their talent to use. They should try this with a few other presently incurable diseases.

rigorously practiced abstinence.
Dude. Not funny.

This is a pretty cool story though, and I'd be happy to drop in my two cents of effort for the next go.

Well you're doing a pretty good job so, I wouldn't change what you're doing.

I've been trying to figure out for awhile now how I could use something similar for my work but it just doesn't seem like it translates well enough to something that can be reduced to basic tasks. I could just be underestimating the power of the enthusiast though.
