This is what I've been helping run this place from.

Looks like a pretty decent rig, eh?

Fear these next images, then. These images show the remains of a once-powerful laptop, and has taken quite the beating over the last few years. It's literally on life support now.

That hole on the bottom is where my CPU fan was. It goes through and you can see the wall. There's a clear piece of packing tape over it to let the airflow from that $4 fan disperse a little bit better through the heatsink, instead of going straight through. The fan above it is taped in because I lost the screws to it.

Another shot of it, sitting on the small cabinet I have under my desk as a footrest.

Here's a shot of the front, no keyboard attached. Those wires sticking out are the antennae for the wi-fi radio. Not the complete lack of the screen assembly.

In this image you can see the remains of the CPU fan just to the right of the black 4" fan cable. The electronics need to be able to report that it is connected to the PC or else it won't even make it past the boot screen. I ripped apart a cat5 cable to lengthen the reach of the fan guts, to make room for the substitute fan.

Help me...

They said the "Night Terrors" Doctor Who episode was frightening, but this is way worse.

It's quite remarkable that this setup works at all. My previous laptop (which was more similar to yours than my current one is) constantly overheated even with its native cooling.

Props for showing willingness to solve problems in style. You would make a good Linux user.

Are you sure? I think the Linux user would be more apt to have two monitors per computer and a second computer on the same desk. Still just as hackneyed past its sell-by date, but yeah.

I am a Linux user and I wish.

Before you can get anywhere with Linux, you have to spend weeks after weeks of approaching software problems in exactly the same spirit to make it work the way you want.

Actually, I don't want to. Suggesting that I can just "get a new laptop" implies that I have the money to do so. If I did, then why the hell would I keep fixing the old shit up?

Anyhow, I need a new computer. There's just no telling how long this one's going to last.... I might have to pick another up off of the local craigslist or something. That is, when I can scrounge up enough money to do so.

I've always made do with all of the things I've had; I was too poor growing up to just "buy new stuff" so I've always resorted to "making things work" with what I had. This led to critical thinking, resource management skills, and becoming a packrat due to keeping things that might seem useful for me to use to fix other stuff.

I have a source of income, but my outflow is just under that of my inflow. Accounting for bills, provisions, and other consumables. I'm sitting on a spare $300 right now, but I'm saving that for some dental work that I need to have done.

I was thinking of grabbing a Raspberry Pi to mess with. I could essentially run off of one of those for some time if I needed to. Everything I do on here can be done on one of those via some Linux distro. I'd probably make a networked Home Theater PC out of it.

You're probably doing it wrong; either that or you have just about the worst imaginable luck. If it can't work the way you want it within an hour or two, it's too much effort

Also wow... that laptop is in a pretty bad shape. Mine's not terribly great but at least it mostly works... as long as I don't do something CPU intensive and overheat it (I should probably just use a governer to keep it from going above, say, 800MHz; it'd be slow but that might solve the heating issue).

I think it's a mixture of doing things not many people do (displaying lots of a Japanese an a primarily English system, then installing a calligraphic-looking font for it before any regular ones) and being anal retentive about small things that other people would just put up with.

Anyway, more on topic, the dirtiest hardware hack I recall performing for computer access was this (closeup1, closeup2). I was on a class trip in London in my last year of school, but my travel adapter turned out to refuse cooperation, and on the first day, as I was sitting next to one of the few compatible sockets in the lobby, a part of the power supply cable (which had previously been bent) blew up with a loud bang. The first picture shows the contraption (involving a bottle of bad lemonade and cup to add the last few mm of height required) to get the plug to stay in the outlet designated for shavers (which worked with continental European plugs, unlike the regular ones), while the second one shows how I fixed the blown up segment of the cable (one of the wires turned out to still be intact - I bridged the gap in the other one with a straightened metallic paperclip. Perhaps surprisingly, in hindsight, no health and safety inspections of our hotel room took place.

Oh wow, this is what I call awful (and dangerous, too). KP's laptop almost looks clean in comparison

Anyway, I wonder how a cable can blow up. In all the overheating or short circuit cases I've seen, the heating/melting/blowing up would always happen on connections, but not inside the cable itself.

If its your lappy, why not get a new housing for your laptop ?
Also, you maybe quite familiar with laptop management and clean up, but you may want to buy a new heatsink and thermal grease.

I recommend tuniq x2 the most for old laptops as they work hard under low air under all the components.

I'm not going to comment, on your pics, but you could do abit more better than that. :\
