What do you guys do for inspiration to ROM Hack? I've been playing some hacks lately to get into the mood, I also feel like opening up a website to host my past hacks. Any pointers fellas? I would really appreciate 'em...

Not that I have a good track record as far as actually completing anything goes, but I tend to think about things that would seem technically impossible at first sight and how neat it would be to find a way to still make them work. If nothing else, the challenge is good motivation.

Sometimes I play other hacks. Even if they're bad. Because then it makes you feel better about your own attempt at hacking, because usually you just *know* you can do better. On the other hand, playing good hacks can be really enlightening, too, since you can often get ideas or pictures of how your own hack could turn out.

Talking about them in IRC helps a lot, too. Learning more about the game itself (i.e. real hacking) can really open up avenues for you.

Right now, my inspiration has to come from whomever can hold my hand through the ASM troubleshooting that has to be done for me to continue... haha.

Well, good luck man, I hope this helps!

The uploader and the frontpage both would work, although the latter isn't really used by anyone anymore.

I never said what killed my will to Rom hack right? It was that whole Square Enix Chrono hack fiasco.

I do have some good news, I'll be releasing a demo in a little bit. Right now I'm working on some eye candy.

In the place of the makers of that hack, I just would have reduced my level of publicity a little, or perhaps gone back to promulgating it through a forum or IRC-based community of sorts as opposed to a flashy standalone site pining for high Google rankings. Lawyers seem, in practice, very seldom up for sifting through the former for things they can take action against.

Looking forward to seeing your demo - sorry if I missed something I ought to know, but what is it going to be a hack of?

I still have it in my blood because I still have planned future projects. Even though I was retired for a 1 year and a half due to computer failure, I'm still urging to do it.

I've played many hacks of my favorite game and still motivates me to make new ones.

My inspiration tends to be playing video games- I try to consider mixing in various ideas from different sources, for example my FF1 hack Fortuna Fantasy took a lot of inspiration from Final Fantasy V, Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star III and the Ultima series at various points in time as I was playing those games... Really the biggest reason there's been so much stalling on the project now is that I've mostly stopped playing RPGs.

I got the gameboy game Donkey Kong for my 3DS, and I was actually inspired by the idea to make a simple level editor for that game. Now if I just had the time...

I always got inspired from playing games. Even playing Zelda has given me ideas for things that could be done in Mega Man. But also, playing other hacks.

I started from a simple desire to make new content for Mario 3 Allstars. That and it make a level that was challenging to me. I spent most of my time working with Allstars and while I never really released my "Kafuka" hack it did bring about a few things others used later.(Like Bouche's SMB3 engine for SMW).

Back when I used to make ROM Hacks, I got inspiration from daydreaming in school or when I was on the toilet. I get all my ideas from there.

I used to ROM hack like crazy, but since I finished the last SMB3 hack that was consuming all of my free time, I haven't really been working on much of anything ever since; not because I haven't been inspired, but I just really needed a break. I actually have a little solo SMB3 hack that I only work on once every now and then, and I'm not treating it as anything serious either. Trying to focus more on it being fun than actual work has helped with me still continuing the hobby. Always checking out what else is going on in the ROM hacking community is always motivating, as well as playing games and hacks to get in the video game mood.

Inspired to start ROM hacking? My love for super metroid and seeing the next big thing within super metroid hacking at the time... darkness spreads 2. (Not that anypony here would know what that one was...)

To get inspiration on what to do in general, such as getting ideas and getting into it and doing it? Well, it mostly come from meditation, music, and feedback.

Darkness Spreads 2, that was an OK hack, I guess. I've played better. (ie; Redesign, SZM, Icemetal .etc)

But since I quit Hacking Super Metroid. i've changed over to Z3 hacking. And so with this, I begin ROMhacking. Again.

What inspires me to hack, is the beauty you can put into the game, if you do it right. Like say, for instance. a Nice rocky, detailed Grassy garden, with little to no effort. Hence is why I like to hack Z3. But don't get me wrong, there are some hard parts to it though. Been hacking it for about a week now, and I can honesty say. It feels like I've been hacking Z3 for years, because its so easy to do.
