Everyone has a few favourite songs here and there, but there are those games where just close to every song on the OST is awesome, or it feels like the given game could not have been orchestrated better. Let's discuss those.

For starters, I'd like to pitch

Secret of Mana - the eccentric, rhythm-focused style of the music just screams JRPG, producing an endless stream of memorable melodies.

Castlevania - all soundtracks in the series I am familiar with are glorious, though not always entirely appropriate for the setting.

Xenogears - The metallic timbres invoke a coherent image of technology and strife. I like this more than Mitsuda's other soundtracks, although they are also certainly not bad at all.

What do you think about the above? Which ones do you consider good? What constitutes a good soundtrack for you? Discuss.

The whole Mana series has a phenominal soundtrack, but my favorite is Legend of Mana.

Castlevania - all soundtracks in the series I am familiar with are glorious, though not always entirely appropriate for the setting.

Agreed. Castlevania has a lot of catchy themes, but not always fitting.

Xenogears - The metallic timbres invoke a coherent image of technology and strife. I like this more than Mitsuda's other soundtracks, although they are also certainly not bad at all.

I can't really give an informed opinion on this one, seeing as I've never played any of the Xeno games.

As for other soundtracks I like, there are:
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - I thoroughly enjoy not only the game, but the music. Especially Byrne's theme, it just has the right tune to it that easily conveys all of the emotions needed in its rearrangements. Mystery in his intro, suspense in the battle, and
Spoiler:
sadness when he sacrifices himself.

I also thought that both Dark Cloud games had good soundtracks. No matter where you were in either of them, the music fit rather well.

Oh man. I love VG music threads.

There are a few games that I absolutely love the soundtracks to.

My favorite, by far:

Cave Story - The chippy PX-Tone format brings a lot to this retro-style game. It accurately compliments nearly every aspect of art and gameplay of the indie production. All the way through the game, I found myself whistling along to the music. The soundtrack itself progresses through the game just as the game progresses in story and difficulty. The first time I entered Egg Corridor, I felt like a new adventure was begging to be explored and experienced. But when I entered Egg Corridor(?), I felt something different. The atmosphere that it brought was incredible and intimidating. It properly set up for the journey up the outer wall of the island.

Final Fantasy IX - Among all of the FF games I played, this one was different. Yeah, the art directing was different, but only because of how the music played out. I don't think the game would have taken such an image to it if the music were any dissimilar.

Super Metroid (And the Prime series) - This is a good example of how ambient music can really paint a picture for you. Samus isn't just dodging fire geysers and obliterating giant parasites, she's walking through hell while doing it.

Lunar the Silver Star (Sega CD and PSX versions) and Lunar 2 Eternal Blue (Sega CD version).

The music puts a lot of feeling into the very memorable and epic adventures that both Lunar games have to offer.
They really did a great job fitting the music to the story.

For Lunar the Silver Star, the PSX remake fixes the music for towns and cave type dungeons and some other songs of lesser importance quite well (the Sega CD version was really lacking in that area, badly) and also adds some great songs for some of the main parts of the game. The Sega CD version of Silver Star has awesome music mostly for the more important parts of the game. Unfortunately, the PSX version removes most of the good songs that the Sega CD had to offer (I seriously don't know what the hell was wrong with them when they did that).

Some of the best music of the two versions imo:
Overworld theme - Sega CD (after Ghaleon reveals himself as the Magic Emperor)
Battle theme - Sega CD
Dragon cave - Sega CD
Silver / Crystal Towers - Sega CD
Turtle Ride - Sega CD
Overworld theme - PSX (after Ghaleon reveals himself as the Magic Emperor)
Althena's Tower - PSX

Overall, I have to go with the Sega CD version for this game (but the PSX version is a very close second for me).

Lunar 2 for the Sega CD was perfect in every way. The story and music couldn't have been done much better. The music adds a lot of feeling to the story and brings it to life even more than it already was. The Sega CD version offers excellent music throughout the game, however while the PSX version has all of the same songs, they totally remixed them in a way that just doesn't work for me at all. The music for the PSX version fails to draw you into the story completely like the Sega CD version. Basically the instruments they used in the remake just don't fit, and the way the songs were played is just weird.
Lunar 2's music has a very adventurous feeling to it, esspecially the overworld music. I love the way the overworld song starts you out in the game with that special feeling that adventure is all around, and how it adds to the feeling of the magic of finding hidden caves, dungeons, and ancient buildings / ruins off in the far corners of the world.

Some of the best music of this game imo is:
Overworld theme (the standard one, and the theme for the ice continent)
Boss Battle music (normal bosses and the battles with the 4 Heros of Althena)
Ancient places (Blue Spire, Mystic Ruins, Althena's Tower)
Zophar's domain
Battle with Omni-Zophar
Eternal Blue theme (in the intro video esspecially)
Star Dragon Tower
The 4 Dragon Lairs
Ending themes

I like a lot of soundtracks, but many of them i enjoy listen to outside the games.. when thinking of soundtracks that was well arranged, these GameBoy titles come to mind..

Wario Land 2 (GB/GBC). I feel each stage fits perfectly with the background music. Its arranged so that as you proceed, you get a new song once in a while. Even when you beat the game once and reach one of the endings, there are still more endings and plenty of surprises music-wise.

Zelda - Link's Awakening (GB/GBC). It was epic.. especially the final parts.

And which music tracks from these games? Cos this isn't about the games in general, Pyra.

Tales of Vesperia
Unlike some games which use one regular and one boss battle theme, there's 15 different ones used for different types of battles. Each one sets a different mood for the fight too.

On top, the music for "events" along the storyline, or in side-quests is pretty numerous, and mood-setting too.

Pokémon Black & White
Some of the music in this, is just beautiful. Compared to older games in the series, the music has moved on a significant jump here.

Outside these two, there's a lot of games where I can only hand-pick select songs. Although, I'd not be surprised if more RPG-type games pop up in this list.

Lately, I've found myself growing fonder of the Castlevania soundtracks. Specifically those of Lament of Innocence and Symphony of the Night. I could listen to those all day.

Ah, yeah, I would totally go along with Cave Story as well. The only slightly questionable/unfitting moment in the soundtrack I can think of is the reusage of the title theme for the plantation. On the other end, I would consider the sequence leading up to the first battle with the Core to be the musically most powerful moment of the game (Geothermal is used in a positively brilliant manner).
