During his experience as Dragoon of the sacred vessel Mitos, Ares had always been able to anticipate his opponents every move. He always had that sesne of cunning tactics that always thwarted an enemy's every move. Hell, if it weren't for him, the Legion would be in ruins.

That of course, was before the revolution tore his people in 2 halves, sending one side to betray and conquer the other in hopes of outlasting the Hive invasion. From across the rift in space to another galaxy, a violent group of insectoid creatures came to prepare their homes for extermination and re-population of their own kind.

That was piecemeal. In comparison to the battle he faced with these robotic beings, the Maverick Hunters, life was a cakewalk.

He never understood their tactics. Though scattered, their guerilla forces were beginning to dent in the preliminary force he had been assigned to take to Earth.

Professor Lazarus may have delayed this intelligence intentionally, but he was dead and Ares was alive. To him, that meant a fighting chance.

He let his head sink into his hands. The high priests were coming, and they wanted to experience the power of the Holy Creator when they got here. But with each hesitant day, defending current positions, the resolve of his acolytes began to diminish over time, battle fatigue washing over them.

The sound of a shuttle broke him from his thoughts. He looked out the window of the command center, and he saw the transport vessel Colossus approaching with an escort of 2 corvettes.

Ah, he thought to himself, finally.

He walked down the steps to the landing pad. As the jets on the vessel cooled, the loading ramp extended to the platform. The Dragoon smiled as a very old looking man walked onto the dock, hobbling as he went along, cane of the elders in his hand.

"Ah, Ares," said the old man, smiling as he approached, "All is well, I presume? I got a feeling of urgency when you contacted me last, bringing me out here."

"Hathar, noble elder," Ares said, bowing down on one knee, "Your presence of intuition is an inspiration for us all."

Ares rose, and Hathar put a hand on his shoulder. Hathar was one of four elders guiding the Ghazarkhan to Earth for their ultimate victory. Ares was unsure of what made one an elder, but all he knew was that when they were near, he felt a sense of enlightment, respect, duty for the cause. He supposed it naturally felt good to have leaders as devoted as they were.

All of them, except for one...

"So what is it you bring a crippled old man to the center of the battle?" Hathar said, eyes shining in the sun, "Is it true you have finally found the Harbinger of Evil?"

Ares was amazed. Though they had not found the reploid X as of yet, they were close. So close, in fact, he wanted all the elders nearby to witness the destruction of the demonic incarnation.

"Actually, we're very close to having his corpse," Ares said, standing straight in the air, "We determined he had disappeared sometime during the battle, but locked on to his transponder beacon 2000 feet beneath the Ice Cap of Antarctica.

Ares faced the elder directly, his expression luminous with a strange passion, "We believe he is in the Temple of the Holy Knight,"

Hathar almost fell over in shock. He straightened himself out, then looked at Ares with hope, "You mean...The temple is here, on Earth?"

Ares smiled, letting his pride show, "Yes."

This was monumentous. With the power inside the Temple at the hands of the Ghazarkhan, the Holy Angel would be able to consume the universe in a wave of unification, glorifying the believers across all galaxies. The fables told of unspeakable powers for the Holy Angel to wield and guide them to the new age, created by the Holy Knight millenia ago.

The Ghazarkhan were simply the followers of the future. Even the Legion, who claimed to stand for good and peace, tried to stop them from this quest. Thankfully enough, the Hive wars took up much of their attention. The Ghazarkhan slipped into darkness during the battle and were never seen again. They would never be found out here.

Another cruiser flew towards them in the distance, it's bronzed armor shining in the sun. It touched down on the pad, and Ares and Hathar approached the elders who exited.

It was odd for Ares to experience such distaste for one person, especially an elder, the most sacred of religious figures. But as that one elder passed him, he felt a chill run through his body. Something about the elder, known only as Vilas to any of the Ghazarkhan, struck Ares as suspicious.

He had appeared to the Ghazarkhan some time ago, possessing powers beyond any technology anyone knew of. He could heal, use telekinesis, and even defy gravity. He brought tidings that set the Ghazarkhan into action to revive the spirit of the Holy Knight anew.

'3 others like me reside in this galaxy,' He had said, preaching to those who listened, 'We are the children of the stars, the last remnants of the forefathers legacy. We must find my siblings and bring glory to the universe!'

Those other three were a peculiar group of people. Altair had been a scientist that had a reputation for being...Overbearing with his projects. He looked like a normal human, but his eyes were like that of a serpent, more like a laceration with an eye behind it. He supposedly came from a planet called Jadan, but Ares knew not of any planet with that name, so he took it upon himself to keep a close watch on Altair. If he could prove he was lying, he could have him killed.

Taran was a Ubukazian-Human half breed. When the Legion first made it's presence it made an effort to bring multiculturalism to itself. However, a rogue cell of scientists took it upon themselves to breed with the Ubukazians, creating a somewhat superior half breed that possessed both an animal instinct and a higher intellect.

Vilas himself was a mystery. He had never shown his true figure to anyone, and nobody could see past the shadow of his hood, but Ares thought he sometimes caught a glimpse of 2 glowing red eyes beneath it.

Hathar extended his arms, welcoming his fellow Elders as they appoached, "Greetings, brothers! Today is a glorious day indeed, to see the descendants of the Holy Knight himself gathered in one place,"

The remaining 2 elders, Altair and Taran, bowed their heads towards Hathar. Vilas remained unmoved, his cloak covering his entire body.

"We have been waiting a long time for this moment," Vilas said, "There are other matters I should be attending in our own galaxy, but I think we all agree this is much more important."

Taran grinned, the spines on his back standing up, "If it were not for you, Vilas, our quest for glory would me meaningless. It is an honor to have you with us this day,"

Hathar began to walk along the catwalk to the building, his robes gliding across the ground, "Come now! We must make haste to the resurrection chamber, where we shall meet destiny at long last!"

The group moved to the building, but as Vilas passed Ares he knew he saw a grin under his cloak. It made him shiver, even through his military conditioning.

Soon, Vilas's true intents will be made certain. This Ares knew he could count on.

Alia stared into blackness. Never did she think for one second that something of this magnitude could happen, anywhere. It was horrible, the way they came down in their ships and began to systematically eliminate cities, people...

But the worst was what they did with survivors.

After the first wave of attack was finished, more ships began to descend to the planet. Unlike their war vessels, these came right to the ground and deployed their warriors, or "Acolytes" as they were called. They took any survivors that would comply with their orders onto the ships for "A greater purpose". Those who did not co-operate were killed instantly.

The disturbing thing was that this "greater purpose" the Acolytes had meant. It wasn't clear until 2 months after the attack, but those who were taken were mutated beyond recognition. Though no single mutation was the same in appearance, they all shared a common rage against any who resisted the Ghazarkhan.

Where are you, X...

"Ma'am, Charlie squadron is reporting a mission success!" Said Furion, Liutenant and Communications Officer in the new headquarters, "They even found more a dozen or more human survivors!"

Alia lifted her head out of her hands. Finally, some good news.

Charlie squadron had been assigned to take back the weapons fabrication facility in East Valley City, or at least what was left of it. Recon had indicated that most of the facility was still intact, and housed a fairly large enemy outpost. With the weapons center now in their control, they could finally begin to do some heavy damage and build some decent weapons.

"Good work, Liutenant, open a channel," She said, standing up.

"Channel open, Ma'am, ready when you are,"

"Charlie squadron, this is Alia, report," Alia said into the comlink.

"Commander Godwin here, Ma'am," He replied, "Mission success. We have a firm stronghold on the facility and request an additional platoon on the double to reinforce us, as well as a medic to tend to the human survivors."

"Roger that, Commander, expect them to be there in 3 hours," Alia said, "Prepare the humans to be transported. Alia out."

Alia closed the link, then opened a channel to Signas, who was overseeing the training of the newest addition to the Maverick Hunter's.

"Signas, this is Alia, come in," She said

"This is Signas," came the reply, "Skies clear and grass green, yet?"

Alia smiled, the levity of her mood rising, "We only wish. Charlie squadron gave us the green light just a second ago, and they requested a platoon be sent out with a medical team,"

"Roger that, I'll send our best and brightest on the double. Signas out."

Alia closed the channel and looked at the viewscreen. She watched as a number of aircraft left the old underground hangar which had been re-activated since the invasion. 2 hybrid fighter jets they had called Firebirds also left as an escort.

These days, you couldn't be too safe flying around long distances like that.

"Ma'am, I've got a wave coming in from the Antarctica base," Furion said, "It's General Sting, Ma'am."

"Well, open the channel, Liutenant," Alia said, staring at the viewscreen. General Sting's face appeared before them, a blank expression on his face.

"Alia, so good to see you again," He said over the loudspeaker, becoming as rigid as a piece of steel. He saluted, even though Alia was not a designated military reploid.

"The honor is all mine, General," She said, smiling and returning the salute, "I suspect you have something of a good nature to report?"

"Oh, you noticed, did you?"

"It's hard to miss with a smile that big,"

"Well then, I suppose I should get to the point then," He said, but hesitated for a second. Alia detected a bit of foreboding from him, but he looked down at the ground.

"...General?"

General Sting looked back up at Alia, his expression blank again.

"It's X, Alia. We found him."

Ah yes, finally I have the first bit of the new fanfic in place. But what is to come of all this madness? WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO DO?

"Officer on deck! Atten-hut!"

The reploids in the barracks snapped to attention as Signas walked to the back of the room. Signas looked around, making a quick headcount, then returned their salute.

"At ease, men," He said, watching them ease up and cast their attention to him, "Everyone gather around, we've got some new assignments for you for the time being,"

As they gathered around, Signas looked into their eyes carefully, observing the anticipation of some new assignment, and hopeful wish of good news.

"You all know Commander Godwin and his men were sent to the East Valley City Weapons Facility to secure the area and take control of it," He continued, "Well, the good news is he gave us the green light to move in and defend it against possible retaliation."

Signas shared the smile wasing over the room, "You've been selected because of your well known reputation for kicking serious ass in the field. Was I wrong or am I right?!"

"Hoo-rah!" The reploids responded, collectively raising their fists in the air.

"Good," Signas said, "Your orders are to defend the facility at all costs unless otherwise ordered by Commander Godwin. Shuttle leaves at 17:00, one hour from now. Be there at 16:30. Good luck."

Signas walked to the door as the reploids around him began to get their stuff ready, but stopped as his communicator beeped at him.

"This is Signas, go ahead," He said into the communicator.

"Signas, it's Alia," Came the response, "I've been requested at the Antarctica base. General Sting's orders. I need a small detail of 2 men for escort,"

"Roger that, I'll send them up on the double," He said, "Signas out."

He looked around, but was surprised to see one of the men staring at him. He approached the reploid as he saluted Signas, and returned the salute.

"What's your name, son?" He said, lowering the salute

"Axl, sir," Said the reploid, "Just getting ready to move out, sir!"

"Your orders have changed, Axl," Signas said, placing his hand on Axl's shoulder, "You're going to be escorting one of our communications to the Antarctica base. Protect her at all costs. Your shuttle leaves in a half hour, so you better double time it to the Hangar."

"Sir, yes sir!" Axl said, raising a salute, then rushing off to get his weaponry. Signas walked out of the barracks and activated his communicator. A raspy voice came over the communicator, filled with impatience.

"You know, some people sleep Signas," It said, followed by a brief pause, "I take it you need something blown up?"

"No, not this time," Signas laughed, "But I need you to escort one of our own to the deep south,"

"I don't do daycare, Signas, leave me alone,"

"How does 10,000 sound?"

The silence was long, but Signas knew he wouldn't refuse that.

"When do we leave?"

Signas smiled, "Twenty minutes, Hangar 18. Signas out."

---------------------

Axl stood gawking at it for a good 10 minutes. He had been early, as was his preference, but he never thought he'd get to use one of these rifles. Ever.

The COM-Tek CCR Mk.II was an impressive piece of weaponry. The elongated barrel pierced the air with razorsharp edges, making it a formidable weapon even out of ammunition. With a single handle to grip it with at the base, the butt of the gun contoured perfectly with his forearms, making it that much more stable to use.

And he got TWO of them.

The weapons officer held the clipboard out in front of Axl, impatiently, waiting for him to sign. Axl signed it eagerly, and returned the clipboard to him.

"Just bring them back in one piece, kid. We won't have any more until Charlie Squadron returns from East Valley."

"Take it easy, sir," Axl said, grinning, "By the time I get back, they'll be in even better condition than they are now,"

The Sarjeant laughed. They saluted, then Axl went back to staring at them endlessly as he walked away.

Such beautiful little gems...I wonder how good they respond to the cold?

Before he could finish that thought, he noticed a reploid wearing a cloak enter the room. He looked around, then fixed his eyes on Axl. The orange-gold fins on his head made him look dangerous as he began to walk towards Axl, not losing a step.

Axl froze. Not knowing what to do, he could do nothing locked in this demon's stare. Right before he reached Axl, his arm shot out of his cloak in a handshake.

"Axl, I presume?" He said, as he stopped.

Axl clumsily shook the reploids hand, and nodded. The other reploid nodded at him too, in acknowledgement.

"I'll be your partner on this mission," The reploid continued, "But from what I've seen, I'll be doing this mostly myself, so try to make it easier on yourself and help me when I need it. Understood?"

Who in the blue hell does this guy think he is?

"Well, I suppose I could do that," Axl replied, his pride suddenly overpowering his logic, "Except for one thing,"

"What's that, then?" The reploid said, his stare becoming colder by the second. Axl didn't flinch. Instead he moved right in front of the reploids face, and locked his eyes with the reploids.

"Why don't you make a move and find out, tough guy?"

The reploid moved almost instantly, sidestepping to his left with blinding speed. Axl was prepared, and had his gun pointed at the reploids head in an instant. Unfortunately for Axl, the reploids reflexes were just as quick as his, and his arm cannon was pointed at Axl's head just the same.

"STOP!"

Everyone in the hangar froze, not knowing what just happened. Axl and the reploid exchanged stares for a good few moments, then the reploid smiled and lowered his weapon. Axl did the same, as Alia came running towards them. She glanced at both of them as they stared each other.

"What the hell is wrong with you two?" She demanded, "We don't have time for semantics, and you'll be lucky if you're not discharged when we return, Axl. Now, shall we finally get out of here? We have no time to waste."

She turned to enter the Air Chopper in front of them, its side door sliding open. Axl could see room for many in there, but it was just the 3 of them going. As Alia entered the chopper, Axl felt a hand on his shoulder, and the other reploid leaning in to say something in his ear.

"With skills like yours, I'm sure you won't be discharged anytime soon," He said, stepping in front of Axl to get into the pilot seat. Axl jumped into the co-pilot chair and began doing a pre-flight routine.

"So what do I call you anyway?" Axl asked, looking at the reploids black and orange armor with gold trim.

The reploid looked over and smiled, then faced the front of the cockpit. Axl noticed a carving of what appeared to be a wolf on the reploids arm facing him, very ornately done. There was a long pause before he finally responded.

"You can call me Bass, kid."

General Sting continued to stand in one spot as the communicator screen in front of him rebooted into it's standby mode. Just moments before, he had lied directly to the face of a superior. Throughout his entire military career, he had never even considered it. Getting caught doing that was not pretty, especially for a Reploid. It was the one of the first signs of being a Maverick, after all.

He could only hope Alia detected something wrong. He tried his best.

"Excellent," Said a voice from behind him. He clenched his fists as he turned around to face Ares, who was holding a massive sword in his hands.

"Step away from the console, General," He ordered, sneering at Sting passively, "You've done your part,"

Sting moved away to the group of others in the back of the room. Acolytes pointed their weapons at the bunch, making sure none of them tried anything suspicious. Had there been more of Sting's men on duty, they could easily overtake the guards in one daring maneuver. Unfortunately for them, they were outnumbered this time.

"So what happens next, Ares?" The General asked, anger in his voice.

"Now we wait for our guest of honor to arrive," He replied, almost with a hint of satisfaction in his voice, "With you and Alia out of the picture, the rest of your miserable resistance will crumble under the weight of it's hopelessness. Then, as the Holy Creator rises up from his slumber, we will bring him to your hero, the one you call X."

Ares smiled his devilish grin again, enjoying the expression of disdain on the General's face.

"And when he does, he will strike him down with a divine wind, and X will be no more. And it will be then that you have truly lost, for the Ghazarkhan will use the Holy Creator's power to ascend from flesh and establish themselves as Gods."

---------------------

The room beneath Arturo's temple was completely dark. One small beam of light shone from a hole in the roof, leading to the surface. Piles of rubble littered the floating island, mostly still intact.

One pile of rubble suddenly began to shake. Small bits of rock rolled and fell off the edge, into the abyss below. In an instant, the mound exploded as Arturo rose from the ground.

As the dust settled Arturo began to survey the area. He saw the Altar was in ruins, pieces of it littered the ground surrounding him. He looked to the place where the capsule was sitting and saw no trace of it. Instead, only a figure lay in the center of a perfectly formed circle, engraved into the ground.

The figure looked oddly familiar. No dust covered his body, and wings sprouted from his shoulders. He remembered himself forcing X into the capsule, then as light flooded his eyes, he could not remember anything until he awoke.

One thing ticked at the back of Arturo's mind as he approached the figure. X had been a reploid, as he began to think more clearly. He knelt beside the mystery figure and rolled him over. The armor he was wearing was quite similar to the one X was wearing, though much different, though now he had no helmet on.

Arturo picked the man up, his dark brown hair flowing towards the ground. He was human, or so it seemed. Red crystals formed what seemed to be a runic symbol was embedded in the center of his forehead, and all of a sudden they began to glow, giving off a small light that illuminated Arturo's face. The medallion X had been carrying was embedded into his chest plate, a ring of light surrounding it.

Suddenly he began to rise from Arturo's arms, and Arturo backed up instantly. Not sure of what to make of this, he could only stare as the figure set himself in an upright position. As his feet just barely hovered off the ground, the figures eyes slowly fluttered open, and stared directly at Arturo. He smiled as he did so, and Arturo looked at him with a quizzical look on his face.

"Your name is Arturo, correct?" He asked, with a serene voice. Arturo nodded, and the figure continued, "You awoke me?"

"I did," Arturo replied, a sad face coming over him, "But I don't remember much aside from being in this room either."

"You were infiltrated by a dark power," The figure explained, "It forced you to try and harm me, but something happened when you did. Another power came from the capsule and made you put me inside. It was, in your mind, an illusion in that it was a way to kill me,"

The figure smiled, no hate present in his eyes, "When you did, the one called X was transformed into me. His creator, Dr. Thomas Light, implanted technology he gained through a device sent from the heavens into a hidden circuit that lay dormant for years and years."

"Until now," Arturo finished for him. It was becoming clear to him that this had all been set up generations ago, and he was a puppet in the grand plan. This didn't bother him all that much, it was not in his programming to hate something.

Or at least, not anymore.

"Correct," The figure said, "When you put him into the capsule, which Dr. Light himself put here years ago, it activated the circuit and he became what you see before you."

Arturo stood silent for a few moments. This was incredible. It was almost impossible to comprehend completely, but he was confused about the reason behind it all.

"So what is the reason for your existence?" Arturo asked, "Dr. Light must have had a reason to prevent me from truly killing you--Err, I mean X."

The figure seemed to sadden at this. Arturo suddenly regretted asking for it, but listened as he continued to explain.

"There was another man, someone very close to Dr. Light, who had been working together with him for years. His name was Dr. Albert Wily, and was a friend to Dr. Light for years before they began their careers as scientists. When they came across the device that I spoke of earlier, which they found completely by accident in a dig far away from this temple, it gave them a technology which would enable whatever it was implanted into to possess the qualities of good or evil, sealed away into two small oval shaped capsules."

"The balance..." Arturo said, apparently to himself.

"The components which X was installed with was the good nature by which he lived by like a code that you could not tamper with," The figure continued, "It gave him conscience, and it was supposed to enable him to command great moral strength. He had the ability to influence that strength upon others, which is the true purpose of his red crystal on his forehead."

As he said that, the crystal designs on his forehead fluttered with energy. Arturo watched in fascination, never seeing such a being before.

"The main function of that technology, however, was to eventually transform it's bearer into me," He said, "The energy contained within that circuit is like no other technology ever seen by eyes of this generation. It has a mind of it's own, and the person you see before you is the way it chose to represent itself in physical form."

"I am, in essence, the living energy which I speak of," He said, that serene look upon his face again.

"That is...Incredible..." Arturo said, barely able to speak. He had never witnessed such an advanced being, "So you are a harmony between machine and a living organism then?"

"Yes," Said the figure, "But for the sake of having a name to be called by, you can still call me X. What I am has no name, for it commands great power. So what I have come from will have to do, if it must."

"You spoke of 2 powers within that device," He said, "What happened to the other side?"

"When they discovered the power that both sides could command, Dr. Light insisted that the evil power remain locked away for good," X said, "Dr. Wily agreed, but as prototypes for X continued to fail, Dr. Wily grew frustrated with the constant failure. He was convinced that the evil side, which enabled it's bearer to possess strength at the cost of it's integrity, was much more efficient and that it could be controlled much easier."

"He stole it, knowing that Dr. Light would never use it's potential," Arturo said, piecing the puzzle together in his head.

"Yes," Said X, with some disdain, "Deep within Wily's heart, the good in him struggled to break free. But the evil within that capsule knew no bounds and used his desire to create an unstoppable force against him, corrupting him. So when Dr. Light created Proto Man, the first prototype of X that could not sustain the power requirements of the technology the good capsule contained, he tampered with his programming to help him take the evil capsule and defend it at all costs."

"Did Wily succeed in implementing the evil technology into a robot form?" Arturo asked.

"At first, Dr. Wily's attempts were unsuccessful," X continued, "As his frustrations grew even larger, the evil capsule continued to fuel his rage, consuming his mind against Dr. Light. Eventually, much to his dismay, Dr. Light converted one of his robot servants, at his discretion, into Mega Man."

X continued to stand in one spot, hovering gently in the air, "This particular android was determined to fight for Dr. Light, and made it his mission to stop Dr. Wily. Eventually, with the help of a man named Dr. Mikhail Cossack, his weaponry was upgraded to unleash a wave of energy upon it's adversaries."

"Then Dr. Wily came across an energy called Bassnium while he worked on his version of Dr. Lights Proto Man," X continued to explain, not seeming to be tired of speaking at all, "It could give the drive needed to somewhat activate the technology the capsule contained, but not completely. So he implemented it into a new android, and called him Bass after the energy's name."

"As Bass and Megaman dueled and confronted each other for years, Dr. Light and Dr. Wily both began to work furiously on their separate inventions. When Dr. Light finally completed X's final form, after those long years of work, he became aware of the implications X's programming might give people in the future. The ability to think on his own was dangerous, even to Light."

X smiled, "Thus, he put X through a test of faith, one that would last for 30 years. However, after Dr. Light put him to sleep, Bass and Proto Man both stormed his laboratory and razed it to the ground. Dr. Light was killed during the attack, but they never discovered the section where X was being developed."

Arturo had been listening patiently the whole time, taking in what X was saying.

Monsters...

"Mega Man continued to fight, but eventually he began to question his existence now that his creator was dead. He decided to stop fighting, challenging Proto Man to strike him down while he stood in front of him, refusing to defend himself."

"But it was then that a robot from space, known only as Duo, crash landed in the center of the city where they stood. When he arose, he said that he had come from the stars to wipe out evil energies that existed on Earth. Bass and Proto Man immediately realized he was talking about the capsule Dr. Wily stole from Dr. Light, and fought Duo to the death, with Bass and Proto Man being victorious."

"In the end, Proto Man could not bring himself to kill Mega Man," X said, a sad smile on his face, then added "but Bass was determined to finish the score once and for all."

"He killed him in cold blood?" Arturo asked, somewhat unsurprised at that fact.

"It was his purpose to do so. There was no question in his mind that it was the right thing to do."

"So what happened to them, then?"

"After Bass delivered that final shot of power, Proto Man turned on him, and a great battle ensued. Dr. Wily watched intently, deciding whoever won that fight would be the one he would base his final design on, him being the strongest. When Bass won, killing Proto Man without remorse, Dr. Wily congratulated him, and told him he would be de-activated and disassembled to create the prototype."

"Bass refused, and deserted his master. Dr. Wily sent hundreds of drones to capture Bass, but none of them were powerful enough to take him in. So instead of wasting time building a robot just for that purpose, he let Bass live and worked on his prototype."

Arturo nodded, grunting in acknowledgement. He began to wonder if this Bass may still be alive, but continued to listen to the story.

"As work on this prototype, which he codenamed Zero, continued he came across a completely alternative solution: Rather than build an android which would be based on that technology from the capsule, he decided to mimick the power inside the capsule with a virus that would purposely infect Zero, and give him that strength the technology was supposed to give him.

"When Zero was activated sometime after X had been rediscovered," X continued, finally making a gesture with his wings, "The circuits that the capsule contained had degraded over time, and as the virus randomly evolved it caused Zero to go berserk."

"But then something unexpected happened. When X was found, his discoverer, a man named Dr. Cain, decided to replicate X's advanced design, including the circuit which Dr. Light had hidden away. When the reploid Sigma fought Zero, the Virus found a new target."

"Because the virus was designed to activate the circuitry that Zero possessed, but could not, it had no choice but to transfer over. Because this circuit was still intact, it transformed Sigma into something much more, and became what is now known as the Nightmare virus. Sigma discovered the great potential with this virus, and convinced his followers to take on it's properties. Some refused, but they were eventually forced into submission."

"So what has become of Zero, then?" Arturo wondered aloud.

"Professor James Lazarus discovered the body of Sigma lying at the bottom of the ocean some 3 years ago. When he found that the virus had survived, he began replicating it. Then the Ghazarkhan sent spies to find the world the two capsules had been sent to, and when they lerned of what had happened, they immediately blackmailed him to make it for them, and they began their descent onto the planet Earth."

"And here we are now," Arturo said, smiling slightly, "But how did X wind up here, in my temple?"

"Dr. Light must have found out somehow what the Ghazarkhan was, and their intentions with the evil capsule," X said, shrugging his shoulders, "He must have implemented X with a special piece of hardware to identify that point in time, if he were still active to see it, and transport him here,"

Arturo thought for a moment. Why here, though?

"Dr. Light must have discovered this place some time after that, and used you to accomplish the task he set in motion for X," X said, spreading his arms and looking to the sky, "And now it is time for me to finish that task. The Ghazarkhan approach, and I think they are coming to greet us with death,"

"Should we fight them?" Arturo asked, curiously. He hadn't activated his weaponry yet, but he had run a diagnostic as he awoke and knew it was intact.

"No," X said, his face solid yet graceful as he spoke, "We shall greet this demise with open arms, and by doing so we will be spared. Come to me, and take my hands in your own."

Arturo moved towards X without hesitation. Inside his head, he could not understand why X would ask him to do this, but he knew he should just do it. He put his hands into X's, and felt a small surge of power flowing between them.

"If it is your wish, I can make you become like me," X said, staring into Arturo's eyes, "You will become, as you yourself said, a harmony between flesh and machine, like me. You will have all the abilities I possess, and the living energy that will overcome you will transform you into it's own image."

Arturo thought for a moment. It would be noble to fight beside X. But somewhere deep inside him, he cried out to be that warrior. He wanted to have the undying courage to fight for good. It was his original mission, ordained by the Xanaxis High Council itself. And perhaps it was them who sent the capsules to Earth for safe keeping, so long ago...

After a long pause, he said "I accept. Do what you

will with me."

X closed his eyes, and Arturo closed his. In unison, they both tilted their heads towards the sky, and began to rise into mid air.

"Then so be it."

And as the words were spoken, the both of them were engulfed in a great pillar of light. The ground beneath them fell apart, and Arturo's vision of the world changed. It was a defenseless child, and he and X were it's eternal vanguards.

"MORTAR!"

Only a faint whistle could be heard amongst the gunfire before the object exploded in the middle of the city. Commander Godwin heard it before any of the others, freezing in place. Coming to his senses in a split second, he threw himself to the ground to avoid the blast, as he yelled out the warning cry.

Some of the troops shot down immediately; The others turned to him in confusion, and in that split second, the shell hit the dirt in front of them, causing a blizzard of shrapnel to rip through their bodies. The secondary explosions harmlessly bounced away and detonated on the ground around them.

Godwin looked to his fallen crew, counting the number of casualties caused by the explosion.

5 dead, 11 lucky...

"Time to move, marines!" He yelled, "Vega, Gomez, lead the way up to the gate. We'll be using the surrounding the area for cover fire."

He smiled, almost dastardly, "Boys, the word to day is Urban Warfare. Keep your head down, or you'll be leaving without it. MOVE!"

Vega moved towards the main gate entrance first, ducking behind a fallen pillar to provide cover fire. Gomez moved in right behind him, moving to the opposite side of the pillar, and took his position, motioning for Vega to move forward. Vega rushed in beside Gomez and began to progress towards the gate. He looked up as an enemy troop vessel passed by overhead with an escort. Godwin immediately turned on his radio, opening a channel to the incoming support they had requested.

"Come in Delta, this is Commander Godwin," He said, moving up behind Gomez as they approached the gate, "What's your 20, over,"

"We hear you, Charlie," Came the response, "ETA 30 minutes. Hope the LZ is clear by then, over,"

"Roger that, Delta," Godwin said, "We'll clear 'em out by then. Over and out."

Commander Godwin closed the channel, then looked beyond the gate and into the manufacturing plant. The Ghazarkhan had set up a base camp somewhere inside, hence explaining the number of guards on the outside. A couple dozen guards in the main courtyard, more inside for sure.

Well, only one thing left to do.

"Gomez, Vega, we need to blow the gate. We'll cover you from here while you move up. MOVE!"

One of the guards inside the gate heard Godwin cry out, and immediately began yelling at his comrades. They in turn looked towards the gate and began to scatter to defensive position. Godwin looked over at his crew and motioned for them to throw grenades. Simultaneously they all threw them beyond the gate and ducked behind their cover, preparing their weapons. The grenades in question were a little bit more beefy than an average grenade, but they were 20x more volatile than the average grenade as well.

3...2...1...

As the explosions tore up the ground and some troops, dust swirled around the entire complex as both sides seemed to stand still for a few seconds. Then the Ghazarkhan opened fire beyond the gate, and that was the cue. The dust had created a permeable wall between both forces, but Godwins team had the upper hand. He waved his hand at Gomez and Vega, and they both backed up from the gate as it blew completely off it's hinges. Thrown off guard by the volley of grenades, the enemy took cover positions.

"GO!" He cried out, motioning for his troops to follow as they rushed the gate. Vega and Gomez came in first, quickly dispersing of the immediate force and pushing them back.

Gomez heard a cry from above him, and as he looked up an enemy sniper fell from a tower right beside him.

"Got one, there's 2 more that I see..." Came the voice of their sniper, Cybil, "One close to you in the tower, Vega, the other pretty far back on the side of the building perched between the smoke stacks."

"Take em out, Cybil, we haven't got all day," Vega cried out, ducking to avoid one of their shots. He jumped up to shoot the one in the tower, but his corpse was already falling to the ground. Suddenly a shot ripped through his arm and he ducked behind the crate.

"Damnit, Cybil, made me go and get shot!" He yelled out, somewhat sarcastically. Taking a second to recouperate, he slowly looked for the shooter, but ducked again as fire came pouring out in his direction.

3's a crowd, boys, sorry.

Firing blindly first, he jumped out and picked them all off one by one. Meanwhile, Gomez had cleared out the right hand side of the courtyard, noticing the final sniper falling from the smokestacks. A smile on his face, he yelled in triumph as he wildly went about removing the rest of the troops from his sight.

As Godwin finally approached the gate, he noticed that Gomez and Vega were still taking out the majority of the enemy troops inside.

"Form a line where the gate used to be!" He screamed, "Shields up, weapons hot!"

Rushing the gate, his men quickly planted small beacons into the dirt to form an energy field to protect them. Planting the last one, Godwin pressed the activation trigger and the force field came alive, energy soaring from one beacon into another until it was complete. Now they could focus more of their fire into the remaining troops inside the courtyard.

A few minutes later, Cybil came on the radio, "Commander, that troop ship is coming back. Looks like the party isn't over yet."

"The only way to overcome this is to stick to the original plan," He said, "We need to clear out the inside and use it's defenses to our advantage. We've got our security passes thanks to Signas, so it's time we move inside and activate the security system."

Godwin began moving in first, not sure if another platoon would rush them as they came into the main door. He opened the door slowly, Gomez and Vega rushing in first and ducking behind some cover to take point. Godwin and the rest of his men moved into the lobby next, securing it. He walked over to the security desk, looking at the security camera's display.

Empty. Every single one showed no movement whatsoever. That was very strange, unless the men at the gate were a decoy...

"Sir, the lobby's clear, where do we go from here?" Gomez asked, kinda surprised.

"Take Vega and get to the security room and reset the security codes to ours. The rest of you make sure the complex is intact and empty." Gomez and Vega moved out while the rest of the men went in different directions. Just as they did so, Cybil ran through the door, gasping for air.

"We got company," She said, moving away from the door, "Cruiser just dropped off a small company carrying something outside the building walls...Wouldn't be a bomb, would it Commander?"

Godwin looked outside. The small enemy compliment was standing in a circle around the box, heads to the sky. They seemed to be mumbling something, then in unison they extended their right arms in front of them over the box.

"Wierd..." Godwin said, Cybil looking over his shoulder. Then Godwin noticed something in each of their hands, but as he did they pressed a button on the devices they were carrying and they all exploded at the same time, soaking the ground around them in blood and body parts. Cybil turned her head in disgust, but Godwin noticed one of them had not pressed the button. He stood there shaking, wanting to press the button but could not.

"Cybil, cover me, I'm going over there," He said, interest in his eyes.

"Uh...Are you sure that's a good idea, commander?" Cybil said in disbelief, "What if he blows you up with him?"

"You're a good sniper, Cybil...Just make sure his thumb doesn't twitch too much in the wrong direction,"

Godwin began to walk towards the man, no fear in his heart. The Acolyte saw him, and continued gasping for air in panic. Godwin finally approached him, and looked straight into his eyes.

"What is your name, Acolyte?" He said, his gaze linked to the enemy before him. The Acolyte made no effort to reply, but seemed to relax as intrigue began to pick at the corner of his mind.

"I'm Godwin, Commander of Charlie Squadron. This city is ours, and we're going to keep it in our name. But you do not have to die here today, my friend. You can stay here, and wait for my sniper to shoot you, or you can tell me whats in this box,"

He kicked the box as he said so, and the Acolyte screamed at him and lunged with blinding speed, tackling Godwin to the ground. His strength outmatched by the Acolyte, the commander found it all he could do to try and pry the hands from around his neck.

"Commander, you're going to have to try and get him standing, I can't get a clear shot with you behind that rubble there," Cybil said over the comm.

Godwin made one last ditch effort and thrust his legs into the Acolytes chest. The Acolyte flew into the air, pulling out a blade from it's sheath, but it was dead from Cybil's sniper shot before it even touched the ground again. The commander got up, dusting himself off. Walking towards the box, Vega came on the comm before he could get a good look.

"Commander, the facility is secure," Vega said, "We have negative contacts on screen, and we have a large number of human prisoners here unharmed,"

"Copy that, Vega," Godwin replied, "Get the rest of the squadron together and come outside the complex to move this package inside."

"Uh, what?"

"Just do it, Vega!"

"Yes sir! Vega out."

Godwin looked over at the mysterious Ark. It was very ornately done, made of what seemed to be gold, with dozens of different patterns engraved on the sides and top. There was some text written on top, but he couldn't read their language so he ignored it.

"Kinda wierd that they just left this here for us," Cybil said, tilting her head to the side slightly in confusion, "I mean, it looks like it's worth quite a bit..."

Godwin said nothing. Just then, his platoon began double timing it towards their position. Godwin turned to greet them, and saluted them as they made a formation in front of him.

"Put me through to Alia in HQ," He said to his communications grunt, Elysia, "Mission accomplished,"

"Yes sir!" she said, unpacking her radio station from her backpack and establishing the connection between them and base. A few minutes later, she got up and moved to Godwin, handing him a wire to plug into his communicator.

"Channel is open, sir, fire away," She said, backing up slightly from him. She looked up to the sky and saw Delta finally on approach, setting down in the courtyard.

"HQ, HQ, this is Charlie, over," He said into the comm, watching Delta unload into the courtyard, "Mission Success, over. We have human survivors here. Come in, HQ, over."

Static came on the speaker for a couple of moments, then finally the response came.

"Charlie squadron, this is Alia, report," Alia's voice came over the comm.

Alia out."

"Roger that, indeed" He said, unplugging the wire from his comm and handing it back to Elysia, "Keep the channel open, just in case, Elysia,"

He looked over at the mysterious ark again. Couldn't stay outside in the open, and there was supposedly a fairly advanced lab inside the complex...

"Alright guys, we need to move this inside and get out of sight," He said, looking them all over, "It's fairly heavy, but four men should be able to carry it. There are gripping bars on the sides, so grab a corner and get hustling. We'll be moving it to the lab on the 3rd floor."

Vega and Gomez moved forward and took 2 rookies, Jade and Dusty, to accompany them. They were brother and sister, and had joined the resistance force at the same time, their home destroyed in the first wave.

"On three, guys," Said Vega, grabbing his corner, "3...2...1..."

As they lifted it, however, the handles seemed to snap into a final resting position, and the lid began to hiss and smoke. Immediately they backed away, grabbing for their weapons. Godwin backed away, doing the same as the rest of his men. For a few moments, nothing happened. Godwin and his men held their ground, shifting uneasily by this development.

Finally the lid fell to the gound, and smoke billowed out of the mysterious box, flowing to the ground and vanishing instantly. Then, they saw something begin to rise out of it, and they all raised their weapons, but Godwin froze. He knew that face, it was unmistakable. He'd seen it in countless advanced training video's, and although the armor was different and he had no helmet on, the hair gave it all away, long and flowing to the ground with a golden radiance.

"Zero..." Godwin murmured in disbelief. Everyone had told him Zero died before the first strike, during Lazarus's operation, that his fighter had been destroyed, leaving no trace of him behind. His squad seemed to be thinking the same thing, slightly lowering their weapons.

For a while, Zero just hovered there, eyes closed, floating upright. For a while, nobody moved or spoke, as Delta began to take fascination with Zero as well, and began moving towards them. Suddenly, Zero opened his eyes, glowing red like fire. Godwin instinctively took a step back, and Zero began floating down to the ground in front of him. Delta stopped in their tracks, not sure what to do.

Zero looked around him, apparently in confusion. It made the commander very uneasy, putting a new grip on his blaster. He couldn't be doing what he had shown them in advanced training, was he? In the video's, Zero had taught them that once surrounded to immediately take note of your surroundings.

At that time, he was counting the number of enemies around him.

"Commander..." Vega said, not moving, "His eyes are glowing red. What do we do?"

Zero's gaze finally rested on Godwin, as if awaiting his response as well. There was now no mistaking what Zero's intentions were, and there was only one chance to save themselves. Zero began to reach behind his back, and Godwin remembered exactly what he kept there.

"FIRE!" He cried, but those were the only words he was able to speak before Zero began moving on to the next target and Godwin fell to the ground in 2 halves, smoking from the cauterizing heat of the Z-Saber.

The flight to Antarctica had been long, but Axl and Bass had been silently flying the transport for most of it. They still had a fair distance to go, but it was only a couple of hours further. Axl looked over at Bass, this mysterious bounty hunter who apparently had been hunting down mavericks for the Maverick Hunters for a long time before Axl had joined up, working secretly in shadow. But what intrigued Axl was the tattoo on Bass's arm, in the shape of a wolf.

"So whats the deal with the wolf tattoo?" He asked, looking back out at the horizon. Bass looked over at him, then nodded and did the same.

"An old friend of mine from a long time ago," Bass replied, suddenly seeming very emotional, "He was destroyed ages ago, but friendship never dies...I immortalized him on my arm to never forget what he did for me..."

He looked over at Axl, and Axl returned his gaze. When he looked into Bass's eyes, he could see whisps of purple energy flowing through Bass's iris, but Bass turned his head back to the horizon, but suddenly swerved to the left, letting out a surprised yelp. Axl turned just in time to see 3 fighter's narrowly passing over their ship. He could hear some surprised gasps and crashing from in the transport area behind them.

"What the hell was that?!" Alia cried through the door, slight anger in her voice.

"Fighters, Ma'am," Axl said, flipping a few switches on the dash, "Almost hit us dead on. Hold on, we're going to take evasive maneuvers as they come back around."

"These guys are crazier than I thought," Bass said, taking the vessel into a slight nose dive, "That was a kamikaze run meant to disable us."

Axl looked over at him, and saw somewhat of a grin on his face. Bass, glanced over at Axl, then back out the window, letting out a small chuff of laughter. Axl held on to his seat, then began to relax as Bass put them back into a normal flight path. But much to his dismay, he got up from his seat and began moving to the back of the ship.

"Try to deak them out, I'm going to see what I can do about neutralizing them," He said, opening the door, "Just don't make any sudden movements that will throw me off guard,"

"Are you nuts?!"Axl cried, taking control of the ship, "What do you plan on using to take them out?"

Bass patted his arm, now configured as a buster cannon, "This baby's had some modificatons done to it since I got it. I can take them all out, just keep an eye out for other ships."

With that, he walked out of the cabin. Alia watched as he moved to the back of the ship towards the rear loading hatch with a sneer on his face.

"What are you going to do?" She said, worriedly. She was gripping her crash webbing like there was no tomorrow, plenty scared for her safety.

"Watch me."

He opened the hatch and a gust of frigid air swept through the ship instantly. The 3 ships were gaining speed fast, and Bass could see that they were charging their weapons as they approached. Taking close aim, he began to power up his buster, and 5 seconds later released an energy wave that rocked the ship.

"HUAH!" He yelled out as the energy left his arm and made contact with the first fighter, causing it to explode and making the others bank away. Immediately they began to fire, and Bass ducked behind the wall beside the hatch to avoid being hit. He looked at Alia, knowing there was a chance she might get hit by a stray shot.

"Alia, go into the cabin and seal the door," He said, charging up his buster again, "I'll take care of them,"

Bass moved back in front of the hatch, firing off another shot and destroying the second fighter with a massive blast of energy. The third fighter began to back off, trying to get a clear shot at Bass. Alia wasted no time in undoing her crash webbing, and bolted into the cabin, almost falling as she gripped the seat. Axl closed the door, and gave her a hand up.

"Where's Bass?" He asked her, making another sluggish deak to the left.

"He's busy," She responded, getting into her seat. She immediately turned on the ships communicator and attempted to dial in the Antarctica base, "General Sting, this is Alia, please respond! I repeat, this is Alia, we are under fire and request some assitance-"

She was cut off by a knock on the door. Startled, she looked back at the door and opened it. Bass stood there, clutching his arm.

"They got me once, but I took them out," He said, not even phazed by what just happened, "Axl, continue on to the base. I could use Alia's help in patching this up,"

Alia looked at the communicator screen. Sting really was in trouble down here, she thought.

"Well, no response on the comm..." She said, sighing, "Keep an ear open just in case, Axl."

"Roger that, Ma'am," Axl said, and continued flying as Alia pulled out a small repairs kit and took Bass into the loading area behind them.

The base in Antarctica had been used previously as a weather outpost by the humans years before Dr. Cain had created the first reploids. When it was discovered that the shelves were beginning to separate from the continent, it was crucial to find a way to support the base indefinitely through the hopefully avoidable melting. While one half of the base was in charge of fully assessing the weather damage in the region, the rest had excavated a hole deep beneath the base, in an attempt to find solid ground underneath, using that as a new construction frontier.

The thing about the new terrain was that it was discovered to be rich in a special mineral called Disodium Carbonate, or DSC. A sample had been sent to another testing facility on the European mainland and they realized that by binding the new compound with existing raw metals, it could increase the integrity between atoms by tenfold, allowing the resilience of the metals that were tested to withstand much more physical trauma and inherently become impenetrable by armor-piercing rounds. The base had been abandoned and destroyed during the invasion, but the Ghazarkhan knew nothing about the construction front beneath it.

That, at least, was enough reason to convert the station into a global surveillance epicenter for the Maverick Hunters. Unfortunately, as Alia surveilled the area as they began to descend for landing, that idea could be well forgotten as scattered debris and reploid parts littered the ground around the base. The base itself has sustained minimal damage, but further down the shelf the radar array had been destroyed completely. Again.

"Coming down for descent, Ma'am," Axl reported, taking a final pass around the landing pad, "Looks cozy down there, for sure...No reading on biometrics or energy sources. Pretty dead down there."

He didn't seem too convinced. Bass chuckled, but remained silent as they deployed landing gear. They both unbuckled their crash webbing and moved to the back of the craft where Alia was sitting patiently, a saddened look on her face as she surveyed the damage.

"Ready to rock, Alia?" Bass said, arming his buster cannon, "Me and Axl will take point, if you want you can come with us or stay here and watch the ship for us,"

Alia unbuckled her webbing as he spoke, and walked over to the rear of the ship. She opened up the small cargo unit there and pulled out a heavy repeater from the small array of weapons. She examined the weapon for damage, attached a scope, cocked and loaded the chamber, and turned to face bass, raising an eyebrow at him. Bass exchanged glances with Axl, and they both smiled, returning her gaze.

"Well, after you, Ma'am," Bass said, extending his hand for her to lead the way. She smiled at him, and pressed one of the buttons beside the door, opening the hatch and lowering the ramp at the same time. She marched out first, surveilling the area with the scope, as Bass and Axl did the same with their own weapons.

"Well, since the power is dead, the door passwords should have automatically reset themselves so we should be needing one of these," Alia said, taking a small datapad from her left side, "Give me a 30 second date with the control panel and we'll be at home base in no time."

Axl chuckled, thinking of a human joke he once heard, "Jeez, you don't waste any time, do you?"

"Well, a girl's gotta do what she's gotta do," She said, picking up on the human humour and laughing.

Bass snuck up to the main door, Axl aiming at the hatch while Bass and Alia took positions on each side. Axl nodded to Bass, and Bass nodded to Alia. She set down her rifle and hooked up the datapad to the terminal, quickly setting up her hack program and rebooting the password servers. Half a minute later the light on the door turned green and it opened, and Axl stepped in with caution, making sure the hallways were clear. Bass and Alia remained to make sure nobody came following, and waited for Axl's signal.

Walking along the dark corridor, he barely took ten steps when a shower of sparks burst out from the roof, making him shoot to the floor, taking aim at the roof. When the sparks stopped, he looked back at Alia and Bass, a suprised look on his face.

"Automatic lights," Alia explained, "The lower part of the base is shielded from scans, so the backup generator must still be running at minimal power. We had this problem with it before, as the generator was originally designed to re-power that entire radar array we saw outside. What happens is an overload of the circuit, so I'll see if I can't turn the proximity sensors off from here,"

"We can't just leave you by the door, and we need to keep moving, so you'll have to do it from a different terminal," Bass said, moving behind Axl who had continued moving forward.

Axl reached the first intersection, making sure it was clear, and motioned for Bass to follow. Sparks flew from the roof again, but it didn't seem to phaze him. Axl watched him approach in admiration, regardless of their little tussle at the base. Alia slowly moved in behind them, flinching at the sparks but continued forward.

"There should be an elevator still running off that generator," she said, motioning down the left hall with her weapon, "It's in that direction, but if it doesn't work we'll have to use the stairs to get to the communications hub. I can try to fix the power, but it will take time"

Bass looked at Alia in contemplation, then finally said, "Alright, well we might find a terminal and..."

His voice trailed off, and Axl could see his eyes beginning to enlarge, that purple flame growing brighter. For a few moments Bass just stood there, not moving an inch. Axl and Alia raised their weapons, wondering what Bass was picking up on.

"Bass..." Alia began to say, but Bass silenced her immediately. He stared down the corridor for a good minute, quiet and unmoving in the silence. Axl shifted his weight between his feet and stared down the corridor, and Alia did the same. Axl could swear he saw a shadow resembling a figure in the darkness but it disappeared and he passed it off.

But he was sure he saw something.

"Bass, what's going on?" He asked, still staring down the corridor. Bass said nothing for a moment, then turned his head and walked in the direction Alia had pointed to earlier.

"It's nothing," Bass replied, sparks flying down from the roof above his head, "We have to keep moving to that elevator and fix the power situation."

Axl began to walk behind him, re-arming his blaster pistols as Alia stopped, looked down the hallway one last time, and moved along with them.

"Sir, we still have no contact from the re-inforcements we sent to East Valley City," Furion called out to Signas from the data terminal he was operating, "I could give them a bit more time, but it's your call."

Signas stared blankly at Furion for a moment, not sure if waiting for the reply was worth what was at stake in the facility. He recalled a memory of himself sitting with Godwin during a private mission briefing, informing him about a secret operation that came above any objective he had received earlier.

"Commander Godwin," He said, saluting then shaking hands, "Hope you're finished prepping your gear, you're gonna be here for a few minutes,"

"With all due respect, Signas, I'm kind of wondering if I want to hear what you have to say," Godwin replied, "Based on the nature of the briefing, of course."

Signas smiled, thinking of what to say next, "You know, this war has been devastating for us all...If we hadn't taken that immediate friendship with the Ghazarkhan for granted, maybe we could have seen this coming from a mile away..."

"If I may say so, Sir, we're still alive and kicking, so far as I know," Godwin said, smiling devilishly.

Signas didn't seem to share his enthusiasm, but smiled slightly anyways.

"What would you say if I told you we could kick back so hard, we'd win the war?"

Godwin looked at Signas, not sure what to make of that last statement. He stared for a good moment, Signas staring right back at him.

"Well, I'd say I'm the man for the job, sir."

Signas changed his expression from a hopeful stare to a huge smile, now relaxed knowing they shared a common goal. He turned around and flicked on the screen displaying a wireframe image of the East Valley City Weapons Plant, slowly rotating to multiple angles.

"This is a map of the facility. You have the same one stored in your memory unit, but this one is different in that it reveals a second basement deeper beneath the first basement, only connected to the main part of the base by a large elevator here," He clicked the remote to zoom in and follow along the wireframe drawing to the second basement.

"Unfortunately for us, as this is a civilian contractor's facility, Vladimir Cossack the 2nd to be precise, we do not have the appropriate passcodes," Signas explained, "They were lost with the security officer stationed there when he died. However, the security modules in place can be manually reset, along with the passwords, and from there we can change them to access the underground area."

"So we know how to get in. What are we taking out?"

"8 packages, 7 of which are Nuclear Warheads."

Godwin's eyes opened in surprise, "Nuclear Warheads? I didn't think any of them were left..."

His voice trailed off. They stood in silence as Godwin thought about the possibilities they could now pursue. Still, there should be more than this down there for Signas to care this much.

"I know you might have inhibitions about this assignment but you can see how vital this really is," Signas said, finally breaking the silence. "We have a plan in place do feint the enemy, and the warheads are crucial to that mission's success,"

"I understand that, sir," Godwin said, rubbing his chin, "But what's in the eight package?"

Signas looked at Godwin with a wierd look, his eyes looking at Godwin with hope.

"That I cannot say for sure. The only intelligence we have on the package is what's on the packing list," Signas clicked a button on his remote, revealing a list of the items in the storehouse, "When we were made aware of the storage unit, we began to scan the list and found this."

He clicked the remote again and the cursor on the screen scrolled down a small ways to an item described as "Crate", packing number #3028342-23. Godwin was slightly confused, continuing to read the information on screen.

"So, it's just an empty box," Godwin said, "What's so speial about it?"

"The owner of the box is of particular interest to us,"

"Who is it?"

"You wouldn't know him,"

"Signas, you're killing me here..."

"You'll find out when you get there. I think it'll be a nice surprise for you, trust me."

Godwin shrugged his shoulders, "Suit yourself. Anything else?"

Signas shook his head. They exchanged salutes, and shook hands once more.

"You have reinforcements standing by," Signas said, still gripping Godwin's hand, "Don't be a hero if you need them before the mission is over. We're blowing the place to kingdom come if you should fail this mission."

"Sir!"

Signas snapped back into the present. Furion was waiting for his decision, staring at Signas impatiently.

"I'm willing to wait a few more minutes," Signas said finally, "Give them 20 minutes,"

Furion nodded, then continued monitoring the channel. Signas watched the screens in front of him, detailing known enemy positions and other intel they had gathered for the day.

Better hurry, Godwin. We're out of time.

Sarjeant First Class, Designation 502 lazily maneuvered the support vessel through the air, en route to East Valley City with the other ships following them. The corvettes alternated their flight pattern every so often, and they switched from flying directly in front of him to flying behind the rest of the envoy.

"Sharp, what's our ETA to the destination?"

502, AKA Sharp, turned his head to look at the Captain, a human by the name of Jarvis. Eddie Jarvis, to be exact, but Sharp didn't pay attention to much else besides his rank. The humans had a tendency for being...Overzealous in their attitude towards reploids, and even more so when a reploid was under their command.

Sharp sighed and pressed a button on the console to bring up the clock on screen. 14 minutes, 38 seconds and counting by their current airspeed, quickly doing the calculation in his head.

"Should be there on the hour, as expected sir!" He replied quickly. Like Sharp, humans didn't seem to care about the specifics about much of anything so long as it worked out for everyone involved.

"Good," The captain said, sneering at Sharp, "Open a channel to the rest of the envoy."

Sharp pressed a few buttons on the console. On the screen, multiple figures began to slowly pop up one after the other on the screen, switching the front view of the ship to Sharps console so he could continue piloting the ship.

"Gentlemen, as we approach the destination, I feel it's important to remind us all of the incredible odds at stake here," He said, clenching his jaw as he spoke. This annoyed the hell out of Sharp, but he continued piloting the ship regardless.

"We all know what's in that facility. And as much as I hate to say it," Sharp glanced over his shoulder, noticing the captains regret immediately, "We might...We might have to lose some good men down there today, human and reploid alike. We can only hope Godwin made it to the storage facility and secured the packages in one piece."

"But we are the last hope for our mutual causes," He said, sneaking a look at Sharp, "If we fall here, then this entire mission is for nothing. If we show fear, if we show any lack of commitment to our cause, we will lose this war indefinitely."

He paused here, thinking of what to say next, but could not. He stood from his chair, and saluted the screen. The captains of the other ship returned the salute, emotion in all their eyes. Sharp didn't fully understand the complete dynamics of human emotion, but as he glanced at the screen, looked into their eyes, he could see that this was a very powerful thing for them all to share. He could see the newfound determination in their eyes. That was simply something someone like Sharp could not speak for.

"Good luck, gentlemen."

The captain nodded at Sharp to shut down the channel. Sharp flipped the main screen back to normal and continued piloting the ship. Since he didn't receive a sneer this time, he marveled to himself at the new display of respect.

They finally approached the city. The facility was located 3 miles north from the city's center metropolis, extending to the very edge of the Industrial sector. The ships flew over the city like predators over a nest, casting dark reflections on the many windows of the skyscrapers in the setting sun.

Sharp flipped on the communicator, preparing to organize the flight pattern they'd been following the whole trip into a secondary pattern, which would condense the space between the ships, something Signas had whipped up before they left. Better organization was vital, he laughed. Orders were orders, though, so Sharp wasn't going to argue.

"This is 502 to all units, move into Beta Formation on my mark," He gave everyone a few seconds to prepare, "...Mark!"

The envoy tightened up in formation, now on final approach to the facility. Sharp looked up from his console to the screen, and was astonished to see a figure standing in front of the gate. He was about to alert the captain when the figure, to Sharps immense surprise, leapt into the air directly in front of them and hovered in midair, almost taunting them to fight him.

It was then that the captain took notice, and stood up from his chair in bewilderment.

"What in the hell is that!?" Captain Jarvis cried out, staring in shock. Sharp wasted no time, immediately turning on the emergency channel. This guy was right in their way, and he didn't seem to want to move regardless of the incoming ships in front of him.

"All units, evasive maneuver Echo!" Sharp said into the comm, "Break away, I repeat, break away!"

The ships broke their formation directly in half, but Sharp saw the figure pull something out from behind his neck. Returning his attention to the maneuver, he returned into formation with the fleet. The captain had been thrown to the ground by the evade, and was scrambling to his feet as they returned.

"Circle back, now!" He said, struggling to get back in his chair, "Order the Corvettes to get a clear visual on screen!"

"Escorts one and two, double back and get a clear visual on that figure," Sharp said into the radio, "Envoy vessels two through four, double back on my mark...Mark!"

The Corvettes didn't reply. As the envoy turned to face the enemy, the captain cursed under his breath as the figure came into view. The two Corvettes lay on the ground, smoke trails only remained from their descent to the ground. Sharp could almost see the figure sneering from the distance they had put between them and him, energy saber in hand.

"Jesus," The captain cursed, "That lunatic just took out our escort!"

"Very well observed, sir," Sharp said, slyly, "May I recommend we descend to the ground here rather than over there, perhaps?"

The captain looked at Sharp angrily, "No, you twit! Fire the phase cannons at that idiot! Destroy him!"

"Attention envoy vessels two through four, open fire on the new target," Sharp said, opening the emergency channel again, "Activate phase cannons one through six, fire at will!"

Streaks of blue modulated energy flew towards the target, but he appeared unmoved. The figure put away his beam saber, and for some reason that gave Sharp a memory of a certain Maverick Hunter he used to know. He tried to recall the facial imprint he might have stored for this unit, and remembered that Zero had used a beam saber in all of his advanced training video's, and on the field.

Zero didn't move as the impending doom approached. He seemed almost intrigued by the trails of color streaking towards him. Then, at the last second, he raised his hand as if to grasp the energy, and Sharp watched, stunned, as every single shot was deflected by an invisible field in front of Zero.

"Sir, negative contact on the enemy," Sharp said, breaking away from the already scattered envoy, "We need a new plan-"

He didn't finish. Zero, who hadn't moved the entire time, was flying through the air towards one of the transport vessels at incredible speed. He maneuvered his way to the rear of the ship, and Sharp could only watch as Zero literally grabbed the tail, lifted the ship above his head, and threw it to the ground, the vessel flattening like a pancake as it touched the earth.

Sharp could hear odd vocalizations coming from behind him. He turned his head to see the captain sitting in his chair, jaw practically to the floor, and discovered that it was the captain making those noises.

"Captain?" Sharp asked inquisitively. The captain didn't even hear him, and Sharp didn't turn around see Zero flying towards them, beam saber in hand, and cut their ship directly in half. He didn't even hear the sizzling hot slag now separating the ship in two pieces popping and hissing in the cool air as the ship began to plummet to the ground.

All he was paying attention to was the fact that the captains necklace began to move from under his shirt. He didn't know why the captain suddenly passed out, but just then he began to experience a slight energy surge, breaking him from his trance.

Sharp jumped back to his console, not sure just what happened, or why the captains necklace was hovering in midair. As he faced the screen, the last thing he could do before the ground came crashing through the screen was cover his face.

"This console should work," Alia set down her rifle beside the elevator doors, hooking up her tablet to the terminal on the wall. Bass and Axl checked the various hallways, making sure nobody might be creeping around, lying in wait. Alia tapped furiously on her datapad, wasting no time in her efforts.

Axl checked the last hallway, and discovered a door at the end, partially open. Slowly he moved down the hallway, sparks exploding above him, making him flinch slightly. He finally approached the door, and looked in the crack only to see what seemed to resemble a person, lying on the floor face down.

Closing his eyes, Axl gently nudged the door open, sighing as the door creaked on it's hinge ever so slightly. He opened his eyes, only to see a pile of human carcasses lying in the center of the room. He could only stare as Bass came up behind him, resting his hand on Axl's shoulder. Axl turned his head to the left, acknowledging Bass's kindness, then turned to face him.

"Is it possible to forgive someone?" Axl said, motioning to the pile of corpses with his hand, "I mean, for all this? This utter act of hatred?"

Bass could see a little bit of emotion in the young reploids eyes, but he said nothing for a while until the lights came on a short moment later.

"I learned a long time ago forgiveness leads to nothing," Bass said, coldly staring into Axl's eyes, "When you decide if you want to live or die, your choice will be with you always, no matter how much you wish you could take it back,"

Axl was about to ask what he meant when Alia's voice took over their communications devices almost instantly.

"Guys, I've successfully completed the repair," She said into her communicator, "What did you guys find over there?"

"Nothing," Axl said aftr a long pause, "We're heading your way, over."

"Copy that," Alia responded, and the comm went inactive again. Axl looked up at Bass, and Bass moved out of his way, extending his arm for him to lead the way. Axl smiled slightly, then kept walking down the hallway to the elevator, Bass right behind him
