Nah, just has either bad drivers or Windows ME.
The computer at work has some sort of PSU problem. When turned on it will sit there for about 20 minutes, powering off and on every second or so. Their solution is to not turn it off () but some idiots do anyway ( again). Weird thing is it's more common on cold mornings, I suspect frost builds up in it or something. |

I once had to turn off the computer through the power strip because nothing would work, not even a Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
At least that doesn't happen that often anymore... |

The all powerful, almighty sleep mode for the win. :p
I only ever restart on a crash, and that is usually due to my own stupidity. ____________________ |

I always found power-saving modes annoying, especially the ones on laptops that kick in when you put the lid down. I'm often on my laptop at work and I close the lid of someone talks to me so that they focus on the conversation and not the laptop, and then I get kicked off AIM and have to re-log into the network, etc. |

I just have mine turn the screen off.
Posted by KatelynYou can usually just hold the power button for a few seconds instead. |

I miss the days of actual hard power switches and reset buttons. Not these finicky software things that just tell the OS to shut down, which don't work when the OS won't shut down! |

How old is it?
My Linux machine has a reset button but still a soft power button, but it isn't working right now. It needs a new power supply, the one part that's the biggest pain in the neck to replace (other than maybe the motherboard). |

Yeah, I guess people preferred the convenience of a computer that turns off automatically after shutdown once popular OSes evolved to the point where shutdown takes a while. (In DOS, you can just cut power at the prompt, and Windows 3.1 shus down pretty quickly.) |

I had that in 2004-2005, and it was awesome, but if you like newer games you'll want a Windows computer or spend a lot of time finagling to get them to work. I mostly play older games on emulators (NES/SNES/C64 etc. and DOSbox), but occasionally I'll play a more recent (but still old) strategy game like Civilization III or Age of Empires. |

Power buttons override the "soft" setting if you hold them for 4 seconds.

Yep, mine has that. Hell, don't all PSUs have a switch these days?
Mine is interesting as it keeps power to the keyboard, mouse, and certain USB ports when turned off. This is good for keeping cordless mice charged, but those don't seem to like my room to begin with. Curiously, when unplugged (or the PSU is switched off), it won't do this until it's been turned on. |

Posted by HyperHacker Actually not all of the computers these days have PSU's. My mother has one of those HP "thin clients" that I gave to her for running low games on. Solitaire, Diamond Mine, etc. ____________________ What FF7: Advent Children Character Are You? |

I think my friend's desktop's PSU doesn't have a power switch. Probably depends on the manufacturer, if anything. |

...why wouldn't a PSU have a power switch?
That's not good. |
