Ugh, I accidentally shut down last night, when I had a download going

Looks like I'll be spending the rest of today downloading it...

I never shut down... I nearly restarted once, but my unsaved Paint windows are good for something.

Amusing that there's no way to cancel a system shutdown once it starts unless you can quickly hit "Cancel" for a closing program when it asks to save...

(Not even "shutdown -a" works, since it's shutting down and refuses to run )

I have a download going and have or a while, and if I shut down I might lose it I have to stop it ever y few hours when their connection dies, but overall it's been pretty good.

I've stopped a system shutdown before. If you shutdown a computer, and it mentions that it's trying to shutdown something that didn't quit running or something, if you can click the X in the corner before it's done, the shutdown is terminated. I find it great if I forget to do something.

Someday I need to write a program that will prompt you for confirmation any time the system is being shut down. Not so much for cases where you do it by accident, but where stupid installers force it upon you.

I shut down every night, before I go to sleep. It just seems unnecesary to use up all that electricity doing nothing. Unless I have some huge download going, I see no point in leaving a computer on 24/7. As for the program to prompt on shutdown, that'd be useful, sometimes I do wind up shutting down and I say "oh crap, I need to do something" which is important, since my computer makes loud noises when it starts up for some reason, and at night, when I'm the only one awake, that's not good.

I always shut down every night (well, hibernate), before I go to sleep. I generally leave it on all night if I'm downloading something...

I shut down most nights. The only time I keep my computer up and running is if I have a download going, or I need to do something in the morning before I leave for school. Otherwise, my computer is turned off when I go to bed, and turned on when I get home from school.

I don't shut down the desktop. I'm not willing to wait the less than a minute it takes to boot up when I sit down. I should, just because it's extra light and noise and heat in the room (which stays hot even when the rest of the house is freezing) and these things all add to my difficulty sleeping.

I don't shut down the laptop either, I just put it on standby.

My parents always trained me to shut down any computer I'm not using, as they're extremely stingy and not willing to pay the few more cents per month. Now that I'm on my own, I often leave it on if I know I'll be back on soon, but I turn it off at night and such.

Here's an open-source play-alike of it but really needs work.

I turn mine off at night unless I'm using it as an alarm clock or falling asleep to music or falling asleep partway through Card Captor Sakura. (Yet to happen but... ) If I'm in the middle of something I use hibernate, which rocks.

I always turn my PC off but I haven't downloaded much these days so... yeah.

If I really needed to grab something, I'd keep it on while at work.

I started leaving my computers on when one of them was having trouble cold-booting. Replacing the old PSU solved the problem, but by that time I was so spoiled by instant access to Windows that I couldn't stand turning them off anymore.

Besides, leaving the power on is supposed to be less stressful on the mechanical parts of a computer than frequent start/stop cycles (for example, it takes a lot more energy to spin a hard drive platter up to speed than it does to keep it spinning at that speed).

My sister also never turns her computer off, because she randomly pulled the power cord out, corrupting the CMOS. I half-fixed it, by setting the boot mode to slow boot, which means it has to go through EVERY bit of RAM, 8 MB at a time. Oh lord.

I've had to shut down computers by turning off the power strip before, when the computer is so frozen up that it won't even shut down properly.

Ew.

You played the GBA variant.

MAME version = much cooler.
SHUTUP!! The MAME version is outside in our probably-over-100F-by-now garage

You have 500 gigs to waste right? start wasting

as for my PC, I never turn it off unless it breaks or overheats too much. I just periodically restart it.

After a day or three of uptime, my computer begins acting wierd, like forgetting my sound drivers and cutting off the internet. Then I reboot it.
