I made this thread after reading an article about a new emerging filter that should allow rendering in true HD. Apparently, the filters that exist now only allow rendering x2, and using them for an HD picture, just applies the filter again over the already filtered content, decreasing the potential sharpness.

Seen above middle, and here.

Anyway, this got me wondering how many of you currently use filters when you emulate, or for that matter would use this new filter.

Personally, I like the look of filters, and usually stick to 2xSal. So, what's your filter preference?

I use filters when I emulate SNES games. I don't when I emulate NES games though, as I want to preserve the pixelated graphics.

I used to play with no filters at all, but recently in bsnes I keep some basic bilinear interpolating because of non-square pixels. And sometimes I play NES games with heavy interference. The rest is all pixel-perfect though.

I'm just going to say one thing.

Where's Mario's eyebrows?

His eyebrows are the same color as his hair and the flap of his hat. The filter can't tell those few pixels are supposed to be a separate thing, it just sees those equal-color pixels as one area. Same reason YI Yoshi has a tentacle arm.

For a similar reason, they have suggested on byuu's board to render and filter the various layers separately so sprite shapes don't blend into the background.

It looks nice, but I'd like to see a video of this filter in action. I bet my computer couldn't even handle it...

I was trying to get to the article that I saw this on, but my internet took a shit and I never made my way back to it. Who's responsible for this new filter? Any word on if it's publicly available?

I also like the way the koopa's shell looks with that new filter.

Edit: Whoops, missed that link in OP.

Well, in the document it made mention that they're still trying to optimize the speed for potential use in an emulator. So it looks like it'll be unavailable for a while yet. Near the end they make mention that the algorithm will eventually try to generate intermediate frames to increase the refresh rate of low resolution games as well.

And here's another picture:

I'm usually not fond of those filters as they inadvertently change the look of the game, they especially tend to make lines either thicker or thinner looking. Even this latest algorithm have some problems, like the eyes of Mario.

If I use a filter, it's probably a TV/NTSC filter, and then i usually lower the artifacts a little so it looks like a real but good TV. :p

I do tend to use filters, except when doing ROM hacking where seeing the pixel information is more valuable (and on NES, which seems more authentic pixelated...).

I should have a look if I can reconstruct the algorithm from the paper later. Anyway, it's sort of amusing to see what kind of stuff MSR is working on lately...
