Why are they so difficult to get? It seems they're only available through administrator intervention, which would seem to suggest a special use. As I recall they were originally going to be used as a sort of reward for board contests and such.
While the item shop is mostly useless since there are no RPG battles with the equipment yet, it's not a huge deal, and thereby understandably not a high priority.

Anyway, even though there isn't a definite system for their acquisition currently, I think it would be rather corking if we held a contest or two with a frog coin purse on the table. It may generate more activity.

I like the idea of a contest for a few frog coins.

The question lies in what should the contest be for?

Anything that doesn't involve posting a lot, please, because that only advocates spam and shitposting...

I happily repeat my humble request for 9001 frog coins for beating Kev.

Board2 contests, however, seem to have a general tendency to dry up and fizzle out...

Alright, I got it. Since the original Acmlm board was founded on romhacking, and there are a fair number of emulators still here, how about a highscore competition in a familiar videogame? Things would need to be taken on the honor system in part, but if sav files were provided instead of screenshots, it could be a fairly interesting way to drum up some competiton.

Save files won't really do much good since most games that keep track of a score, do so from a fresh start. At least NES and SNES did.

A few months ago, the guys over at Countyline Gaming were having weekly challenges for completion and score within a time limit. There were no prizes involved, but it was just fun for the members. Each contestant recorded a video, and posted it to their favorite video site and either linked to, or embedded their video.

Just putting that out there.

That did cross my mind, but the idea of savestates seems more convenient overall. Pretty much any computer can run a NES or SNES emulator, but it seems not every computer can run a NES or SNES emulator and recording software simultaneously.

Savestates or saveram, doesn't matter. They can't be trusted, especially on a board with a history rooted in editing games.

I believe some instances of SNES9x can record directly to AVI.

You would be correct. I use SNES9X for my SNES let's plays, and use the movie function built in.

Though, as a tip... It's best to record as an emulator movie first, then record the playback with the AVI recorder using a lossless codec for better quality, and overall gameplay safety. Recording AVI and playing simultaneously only causes problems.

Frog coins are given on an administrative-whim basis.

In other words, you have to ask for them in exchange for brownie points.
what

I'm just repeating (verbatim, mind you) what Sukasa told me when he was still around.

He said that Frog Coins are given by the admins through edituser.php on a basis of doing things (think back to the Tower of Spatula).

I can confirm firsthand that there is no button in edituser.php to accomplish this.

Now I'm confused. Where the hell is the administrative handbook?

I am still in support of tournament-prize-style rewards. Maybe it's time we went back to Literari or something.

Official Acmlmboard Administrative Handbook:

- to modify an user's basic settings or promote/demote/ban them, use edituser.php
- for anything else, use PHPMyAdmin

IIRC, Sukasa had server access and accomplished that via PMA. He just said it was in edituser to make users think that our good ol' Acmlmboard is more evolved than it is

Naturally.

I shouldn't have expected anything else.
