I don't think so. Consoles are still more powerful and gaming-oriented than smartphones. Besides, to the whole part of being able to play games anywhere, I reply, what about handheld consoles like the PSP or the DS/DSi/3DS?

Handhelds aren't going away anytime soon, though consoles probably only have another generation or two of the current style before massive change will be required.

I'm slowly converting over to PC gaming which luckily tends not to be declining too much. I love being able to multitask.

AS much as it'd be great, I don't think big consoles are on their way out any time soon. I'd be more worried about handhelds like the DS and PSP.

If it happens, then only for one part of the gaming market IMO.. I will personally still play consoles without a doubt. The small screen of a hand-held is just not the same experience. Plus, don't you get neck pains from prolonged use of any handheld? I remember it when i played the GBA and GB Color. (Maybe thats my fault though.)

I've been browsing and posting for nearly a month using my DSi XL (I've mentioned this so many times it's starting to kinda annoy me) and I have no issue with neck pain. Although, I occasionally hold it funny in my left hand and cut circulation off from my fingers, and have nasty pins and needles for about 10 minutes after I realize my hand is numb.

Hooray for poor circulation in my extremities. /sarcasm

I doubt that cloud-based gaming services will take over. For my screen resolution at least, I'd need a download speed of at least 6.5 Mb/sec for 30fps if nothing's stored on my system and the visuals are streamed like some I've read about.. and what I'm sure the article is pointing towards.

I doubt most people would even have internet fast enough to cope with the live-streaming culture they wish to create.

Gaming on a smartphone? People might like cheap games, but any games I've seen on smartphones all seem to be short, consist of tiny levels. Somewhat feels like a rip-off at times, thanks to them being packaged small to try to fit them into a phone's internal storage.

Another point is, most "future of gaming" applications fail to recognise those who like in Dial-Up only areas of the world.

Personally, I'll prefer to play games with a good old-fashioned pad any day. I suck with mouse and keyboard.

On handhelds? They'll out-last Smartphones. Same battery type, and much higher amounts of content on an external cartridge and specialised hardware. Plus to move on a phone, you need to use the touch screen galore. Bulky thumbs = less playing space.

That happens to me a lot. Even when I try to rest it on my knees to put it at a good angle, my neck still gets hurt. I always find myself stretching my neck in the middle of gameplay.

Strange I only have this problem when I am playing one of the display consoles that are above your head at wal-mart.

Specifically it worries me that handheld gaming will regress to unimaginative novelty, with a lowered expectation for high-quality (2D) graphics. I feel as though the new playstation handheld won't really change this and that the 3DS won't fill this niche.

As much as it fucks with my head to agree with Flan, I'm gonna have to say he's right.

Especially if Nintendo is gonna enforce its claim in the 3DS EULA to brick homebrewers, and isn't just blowing smoke up our asses.

Can't really speak for Sony and the PSP, since I couldn't give a shit less about it.

Just Saiyan.

I have the power to revive 2D gaming.

It's a shame it'll never see the light of day in time to save the current gamerbase.

We WILL enter another gaming crash before this is all over.
