The only albums Ive listened to as a whole are:

The White Stripes - De Stijl
and
all Jimmy Eat world albums. One time I listened to the first Linkin Park album as a favor to my little brother... (we were on a road trip, so I had nothing better to do)

One of my favorite albums is "Act II" by the Japanese band TOKIO. I know a lot of people might not be really in to the whole Japanese music thing, but eh ;x I got really in to this group when I spent some time in Japan over the summer. I had heard of them before, but now they were on TV constantly and showing up everywhere, so I was like "why not?" and got one of their albums. Needless to say, it was awesome. Totaly in love with the band since.

Its mostly pop-rock, I guess you could call it. They're basically a J-POP group attempting to be marketed as a rock band, and they pretty much succeed in doing so. They write their own songs, play their own instruments, I basically idolize these guys for those sole facts. Lots of talent right there.

I've also always been pretty partial to my "Volume SeVen" and "Musicmind" albums by V6. Pretty incredible group, also Japanese. I might not understand the words all the time, but I am absolutely in love with their voices. The leader, Masayuki, is hands down one of the most talented vocalists I have ever heard. Love it.

I like Japanese music! My favorite song is the Teen Titans theme song.(in Japanese of course)

Also, I've always wondered why Japanese will randomly(seems like) sing in English in the middle of a song.

It surprisingly seems less odd when you know the Japanese words and context which come prior to the English. But yeah, for the most part it does sound pretty random its mostly just because an English word might fit to the beat of the melody better, or maybe its for some sort of dramatic effect, or to be "hip", or any number of reasons. I know Japanese isn't the only language who's music does this though.

Oh, and the Teen Titans theme? Not bad. I was never a fan of Puffy myself, though I guess they have quite a following both in Japan and even around here (they actualy played a local club at one point last year, they made a real big deal about it and everything)

To the Pink Floyd fans here: If you haven't listened to Animals yet, I'd strongly urge you to do so. The idea behind the album is kind of oversimplistic, but the actual music is probably the best I've heard ouf of Pink Floyd. It's... immersive, sad yet uplifting. Sane but bordering on madness. There's three main songs and two book end songs. Except, in stark contrast to Wish You Were Here, the bookend songs are short and the meat is in the middle of the album.

Animals is definitely one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums. I've heard a lot of people disagree with me on that, most of whom call it just plain unlistenable, but I loved it.

Aenima is also an awesome album and I'm kind of surprised I forgot to mention it. I don't think Tool's other albums feel like lifeless imitations, but it's definitely my favorite Tool album by far. It's also the only one I really listen to start-to-finish.

What I meant by lifeless imitation, is that it obviously has the Tool sound (duh), but the songs don't quite evoke much of a response in me. They sound disorganized or uninteresting, though there are a few exceptions of course, but I don't know the songs by name. Hell, I don't even know the names of the songs on Aenima but I love them. Most of them are weird names like knuck Hooker with a Penis or Eleven.

Strange Days by The Doors is one I forgot to mention. From the song "Moonlight Drive" with its eccentric slide guitar, to the creepy title track, to the climactic "When the Music's Over" at the end of the album, this is an album I can listen to over and over again. And it features some lesser known songs that are really pretty and have some special little solos and parts, like "You're Lost Little Girl." I recently rediscovered this album, I thought I had lost it. To my dismay "Moonlight Drive" had been scratched up too badly to play. Man I was pissed. Oh, and "Horse Latitudes" will definitely confuse the fuck out of anybody you have listen to it.

My favourite albums probably include Tying the Not by Stringed Cheese Incident. It is such a solid album that ranges the gamut in each individual song and really transcends every single genre. The song "Sirens" for instance is simultaneously a hard rock song, but features a chorus that is obviously influenced by reggae.

I rant about it all the time, but I adore the album Up the Bracket by The Libertines.

And I understand that it is not an album, but it the most solid collection of music ever put together. But I have to say...the Life Aquatic soundtrack. The Mark Mothersbaugh work is delightful in how it is simultaneously serious and imaginitive. It really brings forward a feeling of a relived childhood. The song "Let Me Tell You About My Boat" is particularly interesting. It has a childish feeling of glee, but a definitive undertone of something that is lost in the past. It is engrossing, to say the least. Plus, the Seu Jorge covers of David Bowie? Amazing.

I was going to mention these two. Pink Floyd definitely wins for number of whole albums I can listen to front-to-back. Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, Wish You Were Here, and even The Wall once in a while.

Outside of Pink Floyd, the only album I can think of at the moment is MF DOOM's Operation Doomsday!. DOOM is an acquired taste, but man, he pretty much rules the schools.

I have a little bit of Doom, but I'm not a huge fan. I have a censored Mouse and the Mask CD which is Danger Mouse and MF Doom.

If you want a sweet album, check out the Grey Album by Jay-Z and Danger Mouse. I'm sure everyone's heard of it, but it's pretty much the greatest ever. I got a Biggie Smalls/Frank Sinatra mix, which is putrid. "Blue Eyes Meets Bed Stuy". Bigge raps, Sinatra "beats". It's really weak sauce, because what's the point of having Sinatra's backgrounds? Its his voice that he's known for.

yeah, the thing is The Mouse and the Mask isn't really Doom's best stuff (except for Crosshairs, which is one of my favorite songs). I recommend checking out Operation Doomsday and giving it a few listens over a long period of time. I actually was introduced to Doom in the same way. I had a few songs from Mouse that didn't really impress me, but my brother gave me Doomsday, which I disliked as well at first, but it grew on me. A lot. Doom is definitely an acquired taste, but since our tastes overlap a lot I think it's pretty likely he'll grow on you too.

Anyway! I like Danger Mouse and I like the beats he mixed for the Grey Album, but I really can't get into Jay-Z. So I listen to the Grey Album only for the beats, which means the more emphasis a song has on vocals, the more I tend to dislike it. So I don't enjoy most of the album much, overall. Encore is good though. I like Encore.

Speaking of Danger Mouse, Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere definitely stands up to a full listen now and then. If you haven't heard anything off it other than Crazy, it might not be quite what you're expecting, but I recommend checking it out.

Not really, you know. Most of these "popular" artists these days...you know like Britney Spears and other people I don't really care enough about to remember, look at the inserts on the inside of their CDs. You'll see other people credited to have wrote prety much every song there. Its not too uncommong for an artist to just sing or perform a song they didn't write. And being someone who writes music themself, I always told myself that if I ever decided to persu performance towards a professional level that I would always want to write my own stuff, it seems more your own style that way, I guess. Which is kinda why I idolize them in that regard, they don't just play whats put in front of them but take the time to come up with their own stuff the majority of the time.

Not all artists write their own songs. This is humorously referred to in a song by an Australian Band called Custard, in their Hit Song. The song starts out with them talking about writing a hit song... but by the end they are just going to buy one

Well...if you have people writing your songs, I don't think you're an artist

I mean, it's one thing to have a lyricist (like the Grateful Dead), but to have it all done...a bit silly.

A really great album that tickles my indie-bone is the Stubbs the Zombie Soundtrack. I think it is potentially the best thing since sliced bread. It features some of my favourite bands, Clem Snyde and The Flaming Lips for instance, covering some of the greatest songs like Earth Angel and Lolipop. I think that there fails to be a single song on that album that I dislike. They're all bloody gold.
