Nintendo confirmed it's existence today and will officially reveal it at E3. It'll hit store shelves at some point next year and will feature backward compatibility with both the GameCube and the Wii. Here's some more info:

Posted by Kotaku
This console, believed to be code-named "Project Cafe", is rumored to be a powerful machine, boasting bigger and badder specifications than either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, "We would like to propose a new approach to home video game consoles." But don't look for that to include 3D.

The Wii successor is also suspected of using a novel controller interface which marries a traditional d-pad-and-buttons scheme with a large touch-screen input. Kotaku also reported that while the new console will feature a new controller, it will also support Wii Remote-style controllers.

"Bigger and badder specifications than either the Xbox 360 or PS3"?

I'm mildly interested in how that will work out economically. I can't imagine walking down the $599 path being a sound strategy for Nintendo, at least...

I'd say it'd be somewhere around $799, itd be too unaffordable for a while.
Sounds interesting though.

It would be pathetic if they were only merely as powerful as an xbox 360 or PS3. Better hardware in consoles is a huge welcome, although since this is boasting dual Radeon HD 4870s, I'm a bit skeptical of how long it'll realistically last.... why they couldn't just update the plans to include the 6970 instead is odd; hell since it's coming next year, they can probably wait another GPU generation or two before finalizing on it :/

Am I the only one who thought it said "Project Cake" at first?

Nope. I thought it, and even said to myself, "I'll bet it's a lie, too."

What has Portal done to me?

It's the size of a fridge and needs replacement parts every six months.

Realistically, I think they'll have to keep it cheap. Part of the Wii's selling point was it's affordability. I hope they make an effort to stick to their roots though: simple, fun, not overly complex games.

Well it made cake funny, you can't help, but laughing when learning about astronomy, and when life gives you lemons, you burn down a house with them.

I skimmed the thread and read this.

I wondered what the hell it was supposed to mean.

Thanks. Luckily Gmod crashing didn't scare me as much as it usually does a second ago.

By the way, I heard a rumor they may name it the Nintendo Stream. I hope not. Every time I see it, I'll think it says Steam and streams always make me think of water or live streaming. Any other opinions?

Affordable always been their strategy, which was the way Wii and Famicom was made. Of course, Wii didn't get a price drop in a long time due to the ridiculous high demand it used to have.
