On the topic of scaring away new people, I have a few tip from when I joined. Try to make people not feel left out. It felt like everyone couldn't be easily figured out. I felt like a stranger here for awhile. This is one of those sites that doesn't get many new people who join in being a regular. Once you do though, it's great here.
