Whenever I'm on the internet, not many other people are on. The times I'm on aren't very unusual, but it just seems empty. Anyone else feel like this at times? I just feel so alone. Is it the time of the year or what?

Well, around this time, even the East Coast Americans generally tend to go to sleep, and the Europeans are mostly sound asleep already; apart from that, I suppose it really depends on where you go. Places like 4chan would be, comparatively, teeming with life even now.

On the other hand, it might be fair to say that, in a way, people's way of using the internet itself has changed; with the advent of networks like Facebook, not many newcomers actually go out into the jungle of hard-to-understand, idiosyncratic, backwards forum-based communities to mingle anymore. While some places are taking the demographic shift better than others, we certainly are on the worse end of the scale here...

I see what you mean. I personally live on the east coast. Most people are going to sleep by now, but there is still a big percent of the US awake. Even early in the morning and the middle of day activity is down. Only semi-active time is around dinner for me. I also see the whole not wandering idea. Most people tend to go on main sites and not forums. Sort of depressing that forums are declining...

Well, every decline starts with people losing the will to fight... I am sure that the concept of a registration-based forum itself still is quite tenable if one was able to gather a sufficient amount of motivation.

Well there is openID, which is meant to kinda combat that. It's not widely known amongst the populace, but surprisingly there is huge support for it out there. Both Microsoft and Facebook provides it (but dosen't use it for login :|).

Plus I seen openID used as a proof of "Ok I'm this user at website Y" on some web services, most noteable various Valve-related fansites (TF2TP being notable, google it).

You know, I've never thought of it that way, but I guess you might have a point... I remember back when I started using the internet, idiosyncratic forums were basically the first thing I was drawn to... now, I mean, I was hardly the average person even back then, but still...

I would feel rather sad if all my idiosyncratic forums disappeared.

I live on the east coast as well, and you made your first post at ~23:00 EST- about the time I go to sleep.
So, maybe your hours are slightly later than some, but I'm inclined to agree with blackhole, that most people are content to stay where they have been already on the internet, and not venture into the jungle's and the decrepit ruins that house sites such as this.

Not to name names, but I think some of the aggressive moderating of new members is scaring away some would-be contributors too.

"Aggressive moderating"? Are you serious? Name a single instance of this so-called "aggressive moderating".

Depends on your hemisphere. I think an eternal September would be pretty rad, to be honest.

Or you could be like me right now having multiple things keeping you away from your PC. I got sick, my monitor got messed up, I've been playing console games more often, etc.

Here's one. - It's his first post. Nobody's going to hang around for condescending shit like that. I could have sworn there was another instance or two like this, but I can't for the life of me find it.
It's nothing personal against anyone here, but the only way we'll get new members who actually stay is to treat them nicely until they find their feet here.

About that, he took the warning rather well, he actually thanked me for pointing it out to him.

Proof is in the PM he sent me:

Sent by Kyon.
For the heads up ^^
2 minutes in and getting scolded really took me by surprise, and I'll make sure to reread over the faqs a bit.
Thanks again~

LOL Ragetoons!

For me, the internet feels dead around 12am in my time zone EST, even on facebook & twitter. I feel alone at times too, when it happens to me I just go on my Xbox 360 & play some multiplayer games. ^^'

The least activity amongst my friends is between late morning and sometime during middle of the afternoon. Not that I mind as I'm supposed to do constructive stuff during that time.
