Every single debate I've ever had, I lost. Do you know why? Because the so-called "rules" of debate that everybody and their grandmother rely on are so ****ed up, that they force the idiot to win everytime, just because only the idiot is stupid enough to follow them. If the smart guy "me" tries to follow these so-called rules, I can't get my point across.

This is how EVERY single "debate" I ever had went.

1) I tell them some good news/philosophy/insight to make people happier and mentally/emotionally healthier, etc.

2) The other people think that just because I make a post, they HAVE to "debate" it. And when I say "debate" I mean, intentionally change their opinion to be strongly against my statement, despite the fact I said something they wanted to hear.

3) I show them some evidence, reason, explanation.

4) They ask me where did I get my information from.

5) I tell them it is just long abondonned common sense trying to be unleashed from their mind. No need for information sources, the knowledge is inside of you.

6) They go around coping and pasting poorly-written and contradictory articles from websites like wikipedia, claiming that they are "right" because they have a citation, and I am "wrong" just because I don't. Don't forget their personal attacks against me, sandwiched inbetween their wikipedia quotations.

BTW, I don't like digging up past arguments, so please don't ask me to.

So wait, the point of this rant simply is that you are smart and always to be considered in the right even if evidence to the contrary is presented?

That's weird. Sure, there are people that are hard to shake off on certain grounds, but why bother that much?

Because they never give me any "evidence to the contrary."

Burden of proof is always on the person making the assertion.

Presumed innocence before guilt, etc.

Philosophically speaking, you can prove something is correct. Proving some things incorrect is in some places logically impossible.

Please don't ever commit a crime, or your trial will be a swift one.

Though, I do know what you're saying. In a given argument, one could claim something that could be had with common sense, and eventually could agree with each other based on the grounds of the exchanged insight... but in that same given argument, one could also turn around and find some kind of condemning "truth" that supports their opposing claim to yours, thus appearing to be "right".

I just think you need to think your method of debate or you're going to lose every time.

Can you give an example of one thing that is common sense, and people "Prove" you wrong?

...What. If someone says something that I agree with, I'm not going to go and say "wait no you're wrong I totally disagree with that [etc]", that's just dumb; who even does this? Are you sure this has actually happened...?
Also, if you're not even trying to argue anything, why would everyone try and start an argument anyway? This seems unlikely, though I suppose if someone really hated you, it could happen.

3) I show them some evidence, reason, explanation.

4) They ask me where did I get my information from.

If you claim something is fact, you have to be able to support your claim with evidence. If that means showing that someone else has done research and proven it, then go ahead and link to it or whatever. If you did the research yourself, then provide your proof. It's simple.
If you're talking about opinions, then say something to the effect of "well it's just my opinion, I'm not claiming facts here".
"No need for information sources, the knowledge is inside of you" is just bullshit, I hope you didn't actually say that or something similar as source in a debate.

...? No surprises here if that's what your debating tactic boils down to.

Problem with common sense is that it's a rather contradictory term, as common sense is very different amongst people.

I met people who believe for sure that ghosts/magic/gods exists cause it's just COMMON SENSE, and then refuse to follow up with a proper explanation.

And what insights? A lot of the ones floating around are very incorrect I find, such as the classic "Only 10% of the brain is used while awake" claim.

Common sense: If I hit this dude until he dies, I'll probably get in trouble.
Citation needed: "If you kill a dude, you'll go to jail for breaking the law." "Oh? Show me that law."

Kinda bad example, but blar to that.

That still does not mean citations are not better than "the proof is in my mind, bow before me".

Maybe he was referring to intuition. The real definition of it, not the "sixth-sense" popular definition. For example, recognizing colors is in the realm of intuition, not reasoning...

The Mythbusters did that one, apparently it's true if you take it to mean: "At any one moment in time, while you're idle/not doing much, no more than about 10% of your brain will be active simultaneously."

Have it ever bothered you when a citation doesn't have a citation? Or if the citation's citation doesn't have a citation? Or if the citation's citation's citation does not have a citation?

"Nice try, young man. But it's turtles citations all the way down!"

On a more serious note, doctor Beyerstein doesn't need to give further citations -- he brought seven different pieces of evidence. Disprove one and there's six others left.

Still, it depends of the interdependencies in the chain of evidence. If all other 6 evidences are chain-dependant of the first, then the entire card castle is bound supposed to fall. That's what happened should have happened with the HIV-AIDS paradigm many years ago. It's an example among many others...

Anyway, we already know that citations are not proof. Citations are citations, and cats are cats. You can cite anyone, anytime, anywhere. That's convenient. Usually, it boils down to ad verecundiam arguments...
