When I start up Minecraft it runs at a very good FPS, but sometimes after about 30 seconds, I start getting about 10-15 FPS. I tried just about everything from setting fog to resetting Minecraft. Whenever I change settings it runs fine, but slowly the FPS goes down. Restarting my PC works usually, but it can get annoying. Can anyone help me with this problem? I can't figure out what to do.

Have you tried firing up a task manager and observing e.g. how its memory usage develops over time?

This might be a telltale sign of a memory leak of sorts.

What kind of specs do you have? Minecraft's not exactly the lightest game around.

Also I'd find memory leaks to be very unlikely; the language it's in is designed to prevent them as much as possible :p (in fact you pretty much have to go out of your way to find JVM exploits just to create them) The game just uses lots of memory just for the very nature of it, it's practically unavoidable.

You can create memory leaks in Java, but in general they are usually not as subtle as C/C++ memory leaks, and are fairly easy to debug (as long it's not happening within some native code).

There were however a recursive light bug within in minecraft recently that supposedly been fixed now. Maybe that caused slowdowns for you?

Edit: Notch confirms there is a bug that makes CPU usage spike.

Weird, this problem has seemed to stop for the most part. I plan on buying it today or tomorrow (I have the old Alpha from when it was free weeks ago) so hopefully the problem will be gone for good.
