I'm sorry, who made that claim? Cos that's just plain ludicrous.

Also, ASM that complex and/or math-y hurts my brain, so yeah.

Well, the Programming section doesn't generally seem to be the one that the canonical people to be interested in such a thing pay a lot of attention to... the thread might have been better in ROM Hacking.

Someone's trying to claim more than his due here, apparently...

Why am I getting the feeling this is about to devolve into an utterly pointless argument that will just leave a fair number of people indignated?

Trax, don't pick fights...

Okay, I was exaggerating a little bit.

sega-16.com - definately did

PCEngine.com - definately did

smwcentral.com - uncertain. Couldn't figure out what there opinion was. It seemed like they were always intentionally changing their opinions to whatever I didn't want to hear.

wikipedia.org - several years ago

video game magazines - some of them, forgot which ones

Capcom's programmers - Possibly a faked interview

Konami's programmers - Possibly a faked interview

Treasure's programmers - Possibly a faked interview

Youtube comments - definately did

Well, I wouldn't consider smwcentral and especially Youtube comments an authority on anything... as far as the other two fansites go, I don't know. Either way, the problems with that kind of rotation mostly were that in the actual SNES age, increasing SRAM size wasn't just a matter of flipping a bunch of switches in the ROM header and accordingly, memory (for pregenerated rotations) was costly; at the same time, I doubt your method would be fast enough to generally be used to generate rotated sprites on the fly.

But then, ROM hacking has shown time and time again that there are things that the 9-to-5 programmers at companies simply did not realize were possible.

I thought Kawa was refering to the last part of my post?

To clarify, I was asking who made the claim that the SNES was "not capable of moving 4 sprites onscreen without major slowdown". "Here on Board2" sortakinda implied.

My second statement referred to my part in the lack of replies.

That's what I thought you were refering to. That idea was circulating through the internet for several years, and it has only recently been cleared up. As far as I know, I don't think anybody on this website was part of that crowd.

I don't know where the myth originated from, but they all claimed that they got it from what Capcom/Konami/Irem programmers told them.

Seriously. "moving 4 sprites onscreen without major slowdown" was something the NES could do!

It's too vague a statement, too: if you were to claim it can't do something like having four sprites rotate around a central point (and by that I mean their position, not their graphics), then you'd have a more specific argument, and it'd still be wrong -- I've seen a set of NES demos with way more than four sprite rotating around in several ways. If the NES can do that, the SNES should have no problem with it at all.

Hell, one of the first levels in Super Mario World has an entire Koopa Conga Line! The only thing that'd push is the sprites-per-scanline limit, and the conga line doesn't cause any appreciable slowdown at all!

As far as myths go, this one takes all the cakes.

All of them.

And I've personally busted several first-gen Pokémon myths, so that's saying something.

I'm starting to get ideas in my head with my cartoons, I can post 'em in the art section so it can generate activity. How does the title Netherworld Beetles sound? ^^;
