HA HA HA! The infamous Bimmy! You'd think they'd catch stuff like that before they release the game

Posted by Higsby
Especially since that was right at the beginning

You guys have gotta see this video!

I never thought I'd see a game with squaresoft characters and disney characters.

When I was young I had just beaten the first factory level in DKC and the blue screen with a message on it came up and at the top said "warning". I was to young at the time to know what the rest said (or I don't remember) so I turned the game off.

I'm willing to bet it was some anti-piracy message

Just look at Earthbound Zero - it was chock-full of warning/copy protection messages until it was hacked. Why Nintendo would have gone through all that trouble to litter the prototype with those...

Because copiers are/were very real, and Nintendo wanted to protect itself and give people who used them scary legal messages.

Just like 99% of companies do.

On a proto game that was never even released officially? And in review copies no less?

Given how the messages only appeared when the game was emulated, it just seemed odd. Only Nintendo game I've seen on the NES with that fault.

I thought that ERROR was named that because that character's name was mispointed or such, thus causing it to print out that there was an ERROR.

Just because it's unreleased doesn't mean it wasn't finished. It was only unreleased because it was late into the NES's lifespan and NoA said "uh, no".

And of course it'd be in review copies; It wouldn't make sense not to, since if you recall it wouldn't be hard to sell a game like that to the black market for some money, especially back then.

And no, afaik the copy protection wasn't there when emulating. It appeared once someone hacked the title screen to read Earthbound Zero instead of Mother, which triggered the copy protection warnings.

More here.

How about the adult magazine in Tales of Phantasia?

Haha, that reminds me of the two pieces of "Smut" I found in the FFIV portion of Final Fantasy Chronicles. Its description was "Ooh la la", and if you use it, the field becomes a pinkish-tint, and a dialog box appears. It's Cecil, and he simply says (or doesn't say anything), "..."

Oh, yeah. I remember in Shadow Hearts, you find an adult magazine. Later, you give it to another guy who has a <3 over his head. Suddenly, after, he goes, "this page cannot be opened!"

Your character just goes "..."

Not exactly something that I didn't expect in a game but it was a bit unexpected after playing the western version of Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle when a kid then played the japanese version.

Heart, leaf, or Alex Kidd has some hair or genital issues.

There's "dirty magazines" in Megaman Legends in one of the malls (even in the English version, no less)

Shadow Land has a scene which, if I'm making it out correctly, has the main character masturbating to a naked mermaid dancing for him. Freaky stuff, but then again, the story does revolve around him travelling through the afterlife trying to end up in heaven rather than hell.

I would need some proof. Both it doesn't seen like something Namco will do and Tarosuke looks too young to be masturbating. And finally because "Shadowland" is the western release title. I doubt they will allow something like that get through.

a Simon's Quest reference in Disgaea 2.

Also, while playing act cadenza i noticed a lot of the color schemes (there's about 30 per character as of Ver. B) were parodies of other anime/game characters. For example, one of hisui's many schemes made her look like the Maid from Waku Waku 7, and one of Sion's made her look like Viletta from Geass.

Also, back when Megaman X came out... I never expected there to be a Hadoken power-up.

For Double Dragon, It would be nice if someone would hack the game so players can begin with more lives IF of course that hasn't already been done.

Cyan: Wh-what are these? "Machinery for Dunces," "A Pictoral Guide to Machines," "Everything About Machines," "Machines for the Mechanically Disinclined"...and..."Bushido in the Bedroom"?

I was surprised to see a Darth Vader style helmet selectable for your created wrestlers in one or two of the WWE games.

I'd like seeing a Zelda 1 and Zelda 2 retranslation. It can't be that difficult, considering how well-documented they are.
