I was surprised to see a TV in Pokémon Red that said "A game with Mario wearing a bucket on his head." in Saffron City.

I was also surprised at some of the items in Kirby Super Star's "Great Cave Offensive" levels (like the Triforce and the Turtle Shell from SMK).

You get it after a few thousand rooms (2300 or so).

It's probably a placeholder for a "real" "CONGRATULATIONS" screen, since you start on the next "level" afterwards.

As for the thing I never expected to see in a game would be fighting Bowser in a bathtub in Super Mario Sunshine. Not only was that unexpected but that has to be the most retarded final boss fight I've seen in a video game. Then again, just about everything in that game was fucked up like when Yoshi touches water and dies.
