http://www.modchipstore.com/M3-DS-Simply-Slot-1-solution-homebrew-backups-microsd-16418.html

According to Tanks, all I need is this to run DS ROMs and DS Homebrew. Is this true? I could have sworn I needed to boot off of something in Slot 2 and flash the firmware. Please tell me because I am really getting upset at how simple yet hard it is to figure out what I need.

Yea. I told you, it's old technology. That's booting off the gba slot and DS slot. In this new era, we just need SD cards and a flash card and you're set. Ok, now somebody with expeirience take over this conversation.

Slot-1 solutions are the best. You just need your Micro SD card and your flash cart and you're set to go. As long as it's a good quality Micro SD card (check on GBATemp for info) you should be fine... the only game that seems to be picky about SD cards so far is Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.

Plus with Slot-1's, you just need to put the rom on the card and play. No patching a rom or anything like that.

And I'd go with the R4 over the M3 myself but that's only because the M3 is a clone of the R4... they're both virtually identical and get the same updates but the R4 updates come first. As for the SD card, you shouldn't need more than 1GB since the 2GB ones are pretty pricey (unless you find one at a store nearby on sale). You can always move games/saves to your HD anyways.

As much as the M3 is a clone. It did get a better rating and seems to more compatible with games. But I really wouldn't shoot myself over which card to buy here. Super card SD can coome off your list. Make your choice between the R4 or the M3. (I personally want the M3)

More compatible? As far as I know, both the R4 and M3 have 100% compatibility (well, minus PoR). The one complaint is with download play (doesn't work on most titles) but that's the same on both too.

I was reading the reveiws for M3 and it said that DL play worked fine for Mario Kart and SM64 DS.

"Japan-made Kingston, PNY or Toshiba flash memory"

You have to hunt down an SD card that meets those requirements.
Make sure it's Japan made.

Note that it doesn't mean that PoR won't run on your flash cart or that you won't be able to finish the game... it just means you might have to fight through a bunch of freezes.
