Hey! I've had a (very) small hand in a non-hack web project called Funny Translator, which uses the Google Translate API to translate back and forth between English and 56 other languages, finally spitting out a snippet of text that rarely resembles what was entered in the first place.

http://www.funnytranslator.com/

It's fun and silly, but I'm pretty proud of it--if anyone would be so kind as to digg/stumble/join the facebook fan page/whatever, I'd appreciate it a lot!

Anyway, to make this post SLIGHTLY less blatantly spammy, here are a few of my personal favorite examples, which seemed eerily insightful or ironic...

Original: I hate google translate
56 Translations Later: I can not explain.

Original: Da da da da da, I’m lovin’ it.
56 Translations Later: Yes, yes, yes, I know.

Original: This is not nearly as fun as originally stated.
56 Translations Later: Interesting

Original: To be or not to be, that is the question
56 Translations Later: Ask

What do you guys think? Have any interesting examples? Post 'em! Or go ahead and "like" it on facebook! You could be on the ground floor of the next, I don't know, icanhascheezburger. Ground floor! People still like that, right...

Original text:

"Oh, nice, someone made another Google Translate mockup thread! Let's hope it doesn't die like the previous one."

...56 translations later we get:

"My God, Oh, Google is one Scored literary translation; We hope to die."

XD

Also, fyi, the previous thread was about Translation Party (I don't remember the link, look for the thread in the depths of the Spatula), a site that translates your sentence in Japanese, and in English, and in Japanese, and so on, until equilibrium is reached.

Oh right, dug the thread out, it is here.

The Translation Party website is at: http://translationparty.com/tp/

So here's an example. Do you translate better than your bro? Let's see.

So here is an example. Do you translate more than companion? Let's see.

I wonder how this would turn out with human rather than machine translators. Surely, you could assemble a sufficient number of people sharing different languages with each other and have them translate a sentence to one language the next person understands sequentially.

Hm, now that is an idea. I imagine it could work in a Chat Roulette kind of way if there were enough people to actually get the ball rolling.

If the translators were all fluent with both the "to" and "from" languages respectively, it would probably bounce around with little-to-no difference from the original, since humans can do more than just blind translation.

Oh, you'd be surprised how much information can be lost in translation simply due to language structure and customs if you just add the constraint that the sentence should sound good and natural in the target language.

Interestingly, using TP, it makes the sentence more grammatically correct and slightly less nonsensical.

"Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?"
(45 steps later)
"You are in front of me, I can actually do it?"

But sometimes it isn't that funny. You have to imagine good sentences to get good translations.
