It's going to be EXTREMELY hard to start with 64, but, possible. But you're going to have to do MAJOR studying on the game's format, fiddle around endlessly with hex which would take LONG amounts of time. And definitely learn coding to do something that advanced, but, yeah it is possible. I do think you should set your sites lower, but, understand your interest in setting it high. Do what you will, but, I think some building blocks will make your journey easier. If you're really insistant on doing it, google up Mario 64 rom hacking, or check out Datacrystal.org . They may have something there.

Good luck on any note.

From what little you've told me, howtohack, before you ran out, you really ought to get some experience on easier systems and games before you continue your attempts on SM64. If you don't, you can bet we will consider you out of your mind.

Sure, SM64 hacking looks cool, but that doesn't mean any random jackass can tackle it.

I personally don't think you're out of your mind. You're taking off a bit more than most people can chew, but, it will be a learning experience.

Trust me, I'm still no pro at ASM (VERY FAR FROM IT), but, even NES hacking can be extremely obnoxious. That's why I say start with NES, because 64 games are like immensely bigger, and the coding is alot deeper. And I'm sure there's ALOT of compressed stuff in there too.

But if you really are bent on it, (when) Romhacking.net (is up again) has all kinds of documents on Rom hacking. Also you might want to check Datacrystal.org .

I wish you the best. I still say you should go simpler, BUT, if you're dead set on doing this, then check out those 2 places.

Also, no matter how others treat you, you've got to keep diligent. Not all Romhackers will help you.
Good luck!

Trying to skip steps too much is likely to take you more time in the end.
You don't start a big project when you have zero experience, or you'll build something on a shaky base. Then refactoring and maintenance will waste you more time than if you had taken the time to get some experience through smaller projects first.
It's kinda like an RPG: you don't try to handle the final boss for your first battle (assuming you could), unless you're sick of life.

Yeah. But it wouldn't really be his "first battle", then.
And if that guy had a "Crono in a newgame+" programming level, he wouldn't have posted this in the first place.

If you find an SMW editor "kinda hard to use", why are you entertaining the notion of SM64 hacking?

Start by not using the web IRC, I recommend getting xchat2 if you're using windows

Don't be sad, there are plenty other ROM editors out there.

Why don't you just use Lunar Magic until you familiarize yourself with most concepts, then move on to creating your own graphics and learning 65c816 ASM(6502 is the NES version and is easier) then move towards learning 3D and other things, and learn more and more programming(C++ and others) and then you will know(to some extent) how ta hack
