Okay, so after watching E3, and seeing the Kinect in action, a big question came to my mind. How will they be able to design more than just "casual" games for the thing. So I decided that it would be fun if we tried to brainstorm our way over the possible hurdles of designing a control scheme for different genres of games, using the notion of "your body is the controller".

So here's how it will work. I will propose a game genre, or a basic idea. After that, I will post the first hurdle, and then answer it myself. Then I will post the next hurdle that we have to cross. That is where you come in.

You can do a couple of things from there.
1. Propose a solution for the current hurdle and post what you think the next one is.
2. Argue the previously answered hurdle, state why you don't think it will work, and if possible give a better solution.

We win if we run out of hurdles. We lose if the only answer we can come up with to a hurdle is using a controller.

One thing to keep in mind, not only can the Kinect use your movements, but it can also recognize speech.

First game: The Swords and Sorcery Adventure Game!
Pretty basic idea. A 10+ hour game where you play a sword wielding hero who has to defeat an evil wizard and his minions.

First hurdle: Basic combat.

Proposed solution: If you raise your left fist in front of your body, it will cause the character to raise his shield to defend. Swinging your right arm in various directions will cause the character to attack with his sword.

Next hurdle: Selecting inventory.

Depending on how powerful the pose detection is, you could solve this (and all other kinds of command input) using hand gestures, e.g. hold out both your hands in front of you forming a box with your left and right hand's index fingers to see an inventory list. This would also patch in nicely with the "magical bag" notion that is widespread in sword-and-sorcery games.

Next hurdle: Moving around. A player's room generally is of limited size.

Just to put in a side note about my opinion on the new no controller situation, I'm kind of angry. I prefer very non-linear games and like the ability to do many commands using a controller. Not only does no controller sound like a challenge to do this, but it limits so much. Luckily I've never been an Xbox gamer. Seriously, how is this going to help with new FPS games, or free-roam games. Sony is going to start taking over the market and their systems are a bit over priced. I'm waiting until next generation to buy a PS3 so the price will go down more. And Sony is heading towards using motion control too. Eventually we'll only have Steam to play games with any type of controller. Luckily I'm good at mouse control.

Now back to topic...

Movement could be made by positioning yourself. If you move a bit to the right your character walks right. Same with forwards, backwards, and left. To stop you move back to the center of the area your playing in.

Turning is accomplished by moving both arms in the same direction.

Solution: Have the game allow you to use a traditional controller.

Next hurdle: N/A

Yay! We made a successful Kinect game by getting rid of Kinect and making it the right way. Uless virtual reality becomes a feasible possibility stuff like this will always kinda suck.
