I was walking around in the grocery story, thinking about getting lunch when I looked back on the Angry Video Game Nerd Review of Action52 and cheetahmen. One reason for it's existence over time was to discourage unlicensed games from flooding the market unchecked but did it really help? You could also argue it was just a way for Nintendo to make sure that 3rd party developers was a source of revenue stream.

Admittedly most unlicensed games are crap, which most people seem to agree on. On the other hand, the strict licensing requirements back then was quite a hell for 3rd party devolopers, limited releases per year (to limit shovelware) and the whole no gore clause (which as far I know, was a NOA and NOE thing).

At some point it was just changed to "Offical Nintendo Seal", probably cause it really had nothing to do with quality.

So, was the seal for good or bad?

I think at first it was to ensure quality, or at least try to, but now it seems like it's just a stamp with Nintendo's name on it. Kind of like what important people do, so they don't have to sign their signature 100's of times. They don't care what they stamp as long as it's their name on the product.

It was good at first but now everyone is just too dang lazy.

Yeah, it was definitely good at one time, since they seemed to actually do well to weed out stuff that might suck.

Now, while I do think that allowing a wide variety of games through is good, they should be a bit more strict about some stuff. Look at all the garbage (bratz, most movie games, most toy franchise games, etc. Stuff that does nothing but advertise/promote.) that came along for the gameboy advance. It actually makes it difficult to sift through and find the good games that may not be terribly popular. Same thing on the Wii. There may be some real neat games that few people know about that are buried in junk. I seems like they just want to be able to say that they have so many games and yeah, even bad games will sell and make them more money than being a bit more select and allowing games that meet certain standards through. It would give more developers more incentive to work harder to meet the criteria and have a much less of a burying effect.

So it seemed they cared at first, especially after the industry crashes, but there's pretty much no risk of that anymore, so they're just going for max profit and forget quality. Luckily, Nintendo does seem to care when it comes to first party games.
