We need a thread for YM2616 (Mega Drive/Genesis) music.

I'll do it myself.

The Genesis (AKA Mega Drive), despite being on even footing with the SNES during the course of it's lifetime, has been all but completely overshadowed by the SNES in modern times (possibly due to Sega's demise as a console manufacturer). However, regardless of it's popularity, it is host to a numerous amount of awesome games with awesome soundtracks. The main sound chip, the YM2612, was notoriously hard to work with (and hard to emulate ). Unlike the SNES, where composers could just record a set of samples, Genesis composers had to figure out the unintuitive process of FM synthesis to produce good sounds, resulting in a much wider game between good music and bad music than the SNES.

To start us off, here's a selection of tracks from Castlevania: Bloodlines, which has one of the best orchestral-style soundtrack on the system (and is a rather fine game to boot).

Stage 1 - Reincarnated Soul

Stage 2 - The Sinking Old Sanctuary

Stage 4 - Iron Blue Intention

Stage 6 - Calling from Heaven

Classic Tune 4 - Theme of Simon

Nice exposition post, and nice songs. I shall throw some in:

Rocket Knight Adventures - Stage 3:

I find the old-fashioned, whimsical-yet-somehow-solemn, somehow reminiscent of a French circus style of this song strangely alluring.

Gunstar Heroes - Ending:

In the embed code, there are two height parameters. The second one in the embed HTML tag is the one you should worry about. Set it to 25.

Anyway, Some of my favorite Genesis/Megadrive tracks came from a game called M.U.S.H.A, one of the best vertical shooters I've played to date. Also known as Aleste.

Stage 1 - "Fullmetal Fighter"
Stage 3 - "Armed Armor"
Stage 4 - "Divine Devise"
Stage 5 - "Noh Specter"
Stage 7 - "Aggressive Attack"
Endgame - "For The Love Of..."

Sometimes I just popped in the game and jammed to the sound test for hours back in the day.

I was going to post a couple soundtracks by a couple notable Amiga devs, but I realized that one of the soundtracks in question wasn't very good and it's getting rather late and I need to wake up rather early tomorrow.

So instead I'll just post a song by Tim Follin.

Time Trax - Title Music

AFAIK it's the only surviving piece of Genesis music that he actually composed and arranged.

I like the music from Alien Soldier even though the game is way too hard for me to ever play.

Playlist

I know there's silence at the end and one of the songs might cut off or something, but I'm tired as hell when I made this. It gets the point across.

As the descriptions say, watch it in 720p for best sound quality.

No mention of Thunder Force IV? For shame.

Tan Tan Ta Ta Ta Tan
Fighting Back
Evil Destroyer
Stand Up Against Myself
Omake 2
And plenty more! They're all really good songs, so check the rest out. Or play the game.

And then there's Space Invaders '91, which sounds pretty damn good;

Trouble Shooter Daiginjou has some really neat songs;
Twilight Express

Virtua Racing Deluxe has some great tunes, although due to being VIRTUA RRRRRACING they're all pretty short. So, someone put them all(?) into one video.

Done by the same guy as Virtua Racing Deluxe (i.e. Naofumi Hataya), The Hybrid Front has some great music too;
Rebellion Fight BGM 1
Sukarabe Fight BGM 3

Super Fantasy Zone has some great music. It was composed by the team at Sunsoft. Yeah.
Picnic
Fancy Promenard
Good Evening!
Vilily

Slap Fight MD has some really good music, mostly composed by Yuzo Koshiro.

Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master has an excellent soundtrack (as does its prequel, Revenge of Shinobi, but if I went through that my post would become twice as large).
Shinobi
He Runs

Also, another game with good music; Cosmic Carnage. The following songs are accredited to Hikoshi Hashimoto.

There are loads of other songs I would have included, but there are no YouTube videos of them and seeing as that's the norm for this topic thus far... yeah. Also, this is getting unmanageably long.
Also, it's the YM2612.

Way to go rox! Shmup love all the way, especially Thunder Force IV.

Since rox put all of those good songs up, I have to settle for some other things.

Outrun 2019 - Feel The Beat

This is the best song in the whole game.

Sonic 2 - Aquatic Ruin Zone

I really liked this stage music, it just felt good to me.

Granada - Stage 7 (Take A Chance)

A lot of the music in Granada is really good, this one is perhaps the best stage one.

Langrisser II - Knight's Errand

I really liked this battle theme, very upbeat and gets you moving.

I wish there was a Mega CD/Sega CD music thread, there's a few that I would put in there too...

So I subscribe to this YouTube remixer. He does quite a few remixes for older platforms and, in particular, his Genesis work sounds outstanding. It's very professional and stands among the top tier of music for the system.

Mega Man X3 - Intro Stage
Mega Man X3 - Blast Hornet

Sonic Advanced 2 - Leaf Forest
Sonic 4 - Splash Hill Zone

Axelay - Stage 1

Super Metroid (various songs)
