"It looks like Nintendo may have managed to run an early prototype of its upcoming 3D handheld, the 3DS, through the FCC without anyone noticing -- well, for a few weeks, anyway. The filing was made available on April 30 and Wireless Goodness spotted it, posting the image above showing what looks more like an ATX motherboard than a handheld gaming platform. But, what wasn't noticed at the time was the aspect ratio of the top screen (in the middle of the circuitry): it's 16:9, while every other Nintendo handheld to date has of course been 4:3. That aspect ratio matches the 3.4-inch parallax barrier display from Sharp, the one that just about everyone is expecting will be featured in the device. Connecting the dots, this could be a prototype 3DS in the flesh, dubbed the "CTR." Given that Nintendo called the DSi the "TWL" the XL the "UTL," even the naming scheme fits in. Sadly the FCC images have since been pulled, but we look forward to seeing a rather more petite version of the thing at E3 next month."

They are going to produce them as long as they sell.

Wouldn't maintaining a nigh-constant angle to the display for the parallax barrier to work its magic be a bit of a pain in a handheld scenario, though? I can imagine even using it on a somewhat shaky train would potentially result in blur and headaches.

The 3-D can be switched off. That eases concerns about angle and backward-compatibility.

I knew prototypes are usually quite bulky, but I didn't expect it to be that bulky.

Well, I look forward to this E3 to see what comes out of it.

I still think it's stupid. Really it's a scam to pump out a new DS model every year. They make you buy a new one then they pump out another that you must buy the next year, so they keep a steady line of people buying shit they don't need because it's just going to get replaced next year.
They already topped Gameboy Advanced remakes.

HOWEVER If this 3DS thing pulls through I think it would be pretty revolutionary.

Eh, if you don't like the upgraded models then don't buy them. I'm perfectly happy with the original DS myself, thought this might make me upgrade eventually, especially since the hardware will have a fairly nice update now.

Why are you blaming the company when it's the idiots who just buy each new handheld console without even bothering to consider whether it's worth it. It's not Nintendo's job to protect people from their own stupidity, and they don't "make" anyone buy anything.
I have a DSLite and don't plan on getting either DSi model, and I'll probably wait for the second model 3DS before getting that too.

I have the classic DS with a naffed up battery. Less than an hour's life on a FULL charge which takes around 2 and a half hours. No replacements available.

I got the DS lite to replace it, but then received the DSi as a gift.

I'm sticking with the DSi, unless the "3DS" offers a truckload of goodies. I also can't stand the DS Lite's powerful backlight, it burns my eyes after a while.

The DSi XL/LL is just a money-printer as such. Only stupid people would buy that if they have the normal DSi.

I think the DSi is cool and all but I can't afford to update my DS every year.
I can't even afford to get a new regular DS.

I guess they can't make up their minds if they either want a very portable console or one where you can see the screens well but wont fit in your pocket.

The DSLite has an adjustable backlight (4 settings, I think the default #3 is what the original DS has)

Incorrect. If I go by the DSi's backlight setting numbers (which is actually has)

1 - Darkest on DSi, 5 - Brightest on DSi
DS Lite is 2,3,4,5 respectively.
The original DS is about 1.1 - It's clearly not as bright as the DS Lite, but the DSi is only slightly darker.

DS Lite's backlight on 3 really burns my eyes. I mean, I never needed to change it's backlight settings ever.

I always have my DSlite on the lowest backlight setting. It's still really bright. I may actually consider selling that and getting the 3DS. I'll just wait and see if it's worth it.

Well, I have to admit that I actually got my Nintendo DS very early through some official Nintendo pre-order. I think it wasn't going to be in the stores until another month or so. But I probably would let some games to be released for 3DS first.

Looks like most of you guys think this is just another itearation of the standard DS with a new feature, but it's not. This is the "next gen" handheld. It's rumoured to be running yet another revised version of the Gamecube tech...rumoured. We'll find out more soon though.

Not too uncommon to refit older technology in a smaller form.

But it would seem strange for me to give up on using ARM with the "3DS", especially since ARM have a reputation for being battery-life friendly.

I'm hoping the touchscreen will be polytouchable like the iphone.
Maybe 2 touch screens instead of 1? Who knows.

Hopefully graphics/processor/memory like the gamecube, because with a 64-esque console there is definitely a terrain and object limitation within the games which makes it hard to make very nice levels like you can on today's consoles. Graphics aren't very important when it comes to everything, but I know that more polygons = more space and objects that can be put in the levels.

And personally I'm having a tough decision on what type of DS I want now.
Should I get a DS lite and stick with my M3 Perfect or
get a DSi and get the SuperCard DSTwo with GBA emulation?

Poly-toucfhable seems to be another thread with touch-screen devices, but the touchscreen would need to be a bit bigger on the device than it currently is on the DS.

Multi-touch would work fine even on the original DS. I really always wished it could have been done in a great many games.

I've been looking forward to the SuperCard DSTwo for a while, too. My DS Phat died a couple months back, so I decided to buy an XL. It's nice and everything, but I've really wanted to try some GBA emulation, and recent hands-on experiences with the SC2 show that the GBA emulator is basically the same one found in the iPlayer, which isn't exactly the most compatible thing.

I'd stick with the Lite if I were you. There are plenty of Slot 2 options for GBA out there for ya.
