I really miss the ability to rate people on a scale from 1 to 10 that was in the old acmlmboard forum. Useful? Probably not. Fun? Questionably. Good cure for boredom? Most definitely.

I'm not sure if some people's fragile ego would take it well if their worth to the community was boiled down to a possibly not overly high numerical figure...

Projection?

If it gets introduced, I'm so going to rate you 0 for that.

How about the option to opt-in for it then? If you don't want to be rated, you would never have to enable it. But conversely you would never be able to rate anyone else.

That would make it seem all the more like a plain popularity contest rather than a system to assess people as posters and offer rewards for good and deterrents for bad conduct...

Well, I'd like to hear the opinions of other staff members before doing anything, anyway.

I think it's a bad idea. I mean, it's basically a number that represents (in some unit of measurement) how long your e-dick is. It's the seed of tons of potential arguments, flame wars, and just overall tension that we could easily do without. What part of a post is insufficient enough to warrant something like this?

I'd like to point out that it was present for years without any such incidents. It was just a quirky thing that i don't see on most forums. And it had its uses too, in that you could kind of see how well liked someone was, their reputation on the board at large and such. The feature also told you out of how many votes the rating was from, so if you got 1 0/10 rating and no other votes, well you just figure one person just doesn't like you.

If you're worried about it being used for e-dick, you might as well eliminate ranks and post counts too.

p.s. you could make it configurable so that a user could "hide" their rating from everyone else but still be voted for. Or they could just remove themselves from being rated entirely so they're never the wiser. And that way, a user voting for another user would only be able to view their own vote (and change it if they wanted). I think there's plenty of ways you could protect someone's ego or privacy.

MathOnNapkins, I've seen it on many sites. It's a useful thing in the way of letting people know what to expect from some posters. As for the e-dick and flame wars, people will always find some way to bolster those. It's just part of the internet now. You seem to do pretty well here suppressing it, I can't see that ratings would be much of a problem.

I completely agree. What's the value in not giving someone a tool because it will aid them in achieving something they can already very easily achieve?

I've always said anyone that complains about users epeens probably just has a tiny one themselves ;(

What about only giving the option of good ratings? (ala "I like this user"), then we can have the benefits, without the problems that bad ratings would cause (such people would just not get more ratings than other people).

True that would prevent a huge flame war of an angered person rereging and giving huge amounts of disapproval. You could add a thumbs up in part of the posts.

Yeah that kind of thing. I've seen it in plenty of other places. Maybe instead of liking a post just like the user. I always liked that better.

There's always the karma system (I've seen it on ProBoards). It'd be a different implementation method over a rating system similar to that of YouTube.

Of course, similar thinking to KP, overall I think it could lead to more bad than good.

Rating individual posts is a unique idea too, but again, any sort of rating system for anything, whether it be users, posts, avatars, etc. just seems like it would be abused with one going out of their way by some means to maintain a place higher than everyone else to stroke their own ego, i.e. "rating abuse". I believe the seasonal Board 2 Mosts is good enough when it comes to any method of implementing a rating system; since it only occurs on occasion, damaged egos have more time to recover from any possible damage that would be more minimal than if there was a negative rating number pertaining to you that would not disappear... unless there was a reset option, of course, but then that would just cheapen the feature even further.

Some systems solve that by only allowing upvotes.

I generally find rating systems to be an bad idea. Not much function, yet potentional drama from it.

Ailure: you're an oldbie from the original acmlm board. Please name one time this ever caused drama on any of the incarnations. (I came in at the tail end of incarnation 2).

I think it did when it was revealed at some point who rated for who or something. I don't remember cause it was so long ago. I do remember someone actually asked to get low ratings on purpose too.

I just think it's better to have people individually judge a persona after behavior than a silly "reputation".

rejected, there's no purpose for this board to have rep, it's not a forum for buying/selling stuff where that sort of thing could be helpful
