So, I'm very, very interested in converting the music from some GameBoy games into different formats (Midi, Xm, etc.) for use in different stuff, and, surprisingly, it can't seem to find a proper converter.

And before you ask, yes, I've used Google, and thousands of other search engines.

So, is there any tool for converting .GBS files to another format? Or can I do it manually somehow?

I think the main problem is that GBS files, like SPC and xSF, do not contain standardized music data but rather, are the actual music playback routines from their parent games with the music data in some game (engine) specific format.

The only way to convert these is by recording what you play. I've seen an NSF player that could do this and Sappy can do it for any GBA game that uses the music engine that comes with the Nintendo GBA development kit, but I don't know of any GBS recorders.

And when I said "record what you play", I did not mean "record it to MP3 or something", but exactly what you're talking about.

You can ask Gigo for the NSF2MIDI source code, Who knows, He may or may not give it to you,

There is another option, get the source from the VGM2MID homepage, **SMSPower Forums, or Zophar's Domain.

**= SMS means Sega Master System

So, apparently, after doing a bit of research on the internet, there is a method to do it.

It involves taking a .GBS file, and injecting it into a GB Music Player .GB rom, then using Goomba to convert that file into a .GBA rom, and then manually ripping the music from there.

Sappy won't work, since it doesn't use the official Nintendo music engine, and I have no clue on how to rip the music manually.

Only solution now is to convert it by hand, Sorry. But that is all we can do to help with this situation.

Actually, I was hoping that I could manage to convert it to .gsf, with a little help, using the above method.

If I may suggest, export four WAVs of each channel's bleeps and convert them with a WAV to MID tool. They exist and suck badly, but even the most basic ones can convert simple tunes to midi notes.

Or just figure out the format. What game are you screwing around with?

I tried that, but it turned out preeeeeeeeeetty bad. Thanks for the tip, regardless.

Keitai Denjū Telefang, also known as the pirate classics, Pokémon Jade and Diamond for the GB.

I got the soundtrack from Zophar, so I guess that somebody must know the format.

You don't need to know such specifics to rip a GBS file. Some, but not that much.

It would be cool if i am able to to convert all zelda musics from both nes and gameboy to super nintendo spc music format for using instruments from zelda 3 instead of using sampled square waves as instruments.

usefull in romhacking. hearing onox song with zelda 3 boss instruments instead of using ripped waveforms as instruments. The dream can be true, nothing is impossible.

Step 1: wait for blackhole89 to finish and release Solar Soundtrack.
Step 2: use said program and a good ear to rewrite those songs in SPC.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: No profit, cos this is rohmacking and we don't do profit here.

I've been doing this for the better part of a decade.

It's not working.

What RT-55J said.
Release early, release often <- clearly not the philosophy followed for Solar Soundtrack

What do you mean by GB Music Player .GB rom? Where can I get this?

Bumping last year's threads tends not to end in answers.
