Native Swedish, quite comfortable with English.

I know some minor levels of Japanesee, but I can only pick out only a few basic terms. Other Scandinavian languages are easy to pick up if you know Swedish as they're pretty similar.

I natively speak English, but I'm a student of language, so it's not only my job to be more proficient than the average writer/speaker at it, but also to learn other languages. I had Spanish in high school (and excelled at it, I might add), and though it doesn't quite count as a second language just yet, it's definitely something I can build on.

I've tried to learn many languages over the years: I gave an honest try at French and Polish, and I've dabbled in Italian, Portuguese, Finnish, German, and Russian. I plan to become at least trilingual before I pass away, so my third language will probably come from this group of seven. Maybe add Japanese to these considerations if it ever dawns on that country how retarded its writing system is.

I wouldn't consider it much worse than English or French, in their gory randomness, really; if anything, it's close to being the best alternative if you consider the spoken language to be represented an immovable given. Motions to replace it with syllabaries or even the Latin alphabet existed and were rejected for a good reason.

If you are looking for an unambiguously good writing system, try Korean.

Last view: 258 days 		Hangul (the (modern) Korean writing system) uses a layout that places each syllable in a separate square character, with 2 or 3 parts within the square that represent the components of the syllable. There is a relatively small number of these components, & they have fixed phonetic values, so it is easy to learn, & the 1-square-per-syllable layout makes it easier to read (depending on the person, of course).

Additionally, the shapes of the letters themselves follow a rather well thought through system that actually allows to deduce each letter's pronunciation, and the few ambiguities in pronunciation->spelling translation are generally used in a sensible way to reflect morphology.

But I don't find the simplified version pretty at all, I feel the same when seeing it as when I see it a sans serif font (very readable, but we're talking about aesthetics).

Nor does it to me, but I'm commenting on its beauty. I think it's the best looking language, since it seems simple an ordered, but still oriental like.

Here's the same text in Chinese and Japanese, respectively for comparison (PS all these texts are babelish style)



Chinese seems too busy and unnecessarily complicated, while Japanese seems unordered and random (if you didn't know about Japanese and I told you I made up those signs, would you believe me?), Korean actually fixes those problems.

Last view: 1259 days 		I have reasons why people can't understand my Japanese too well. Even Japanese 2ch and my latest female companion Sayako. She said that my Japanese is understandable only 95% of the time.

Too many Japanese females I have didn't want men who speaks bad Japanese so I rather find one who has good English and most girls living in Tokyo are speaking English.

As far as pure prettiness goes, I think Mongolian script and the calligraphic varieties of Arabic deserve the cake. Georgian doesn't look too bad, either.

As for your examples, at least the Japanese seems pretty botched (to the point I can't make a good guess of what the original sentence was), leading me to assume that the Chinese won't be much better; ostensibly, the "unnecessarily complicated" aspects of it should be mitigated by a single character expressing much more than a single letter in another script, leading to texts being much shorter than corresponding alphabetic ones.

I think written Japanese looked better back when Katakana was used as the default syllabary (cf. this). Even in most modern mincho typefaces (i.e. something like a CJK equivalent of serif typefaces for Latin text), you'll still observe that Chinese characters (nouns, word stems) are typically rendered slightly larger than kana, giving the text a useful optical order along the lines of capitalization in languages where it is still used more extensively (German) (and at any rate, mixed kanji/kana text represents the typical look of Japanese more accurately):

(that translates as "This is not pretty?", maybe それはかなりではないか? would have been a better translation of "Isn't it pretty?", it was just added today as yesterday the first one appeared )

Your translator used the "quite"/"considerably" sense of "pretty", as in "pretty neat".
