Namely, on the registration, edit profile and edit user/whatever pages.

All of those fields should have a "Confirm password" field along with them.
It would reduce the chances of goofing your password or, worse, accidentally changing someone else's password when editing him/her because of the browser's password field autofilling, or whatever goofing.

All the board systems I know so far always ask for passwords twice. There's no reason Acmlmboards shouldn't.

This actually makes a lot of sense. I'll look into it.

But that's a Acmlmboard tradition. There's always some admin goofing up users passwords over the years due to that.

That's not an excuse. You know what's an Acmlmboard tradition? Post layouts. And we all how that ended.

Double password fields added in editprofile and register.

Thanks Now hopefully we'll have less passwords goofed up

Edit- the way it works for editprofile should be changed to something like ignoring the password change and still changing the other details when the second password field is empty. Otherwise, as most browsers will autofill the first password field but not the second one, you have to enter your password each and every time you're editing your profile.

That makes so much sense, you'd have to wonder why not.

You should stop your browser from doing that...

If the profile change runs through, we are going to get a sufficient number of people who will just ignore or overlook that the password didn't change, move on and wind up not knowing their password because they think they changed it. Also, we don't really have any established standards for displaying a "partial success" of any kind at the moment...

I think some modern forum software puts the "Change password" fields on a seperate page. Can't check right now.

Yeah, many have segmented profile editing, where you only change a limited number of related fields at a time (password/email, avatar/sig/etc, et al).

Except those suck.

I vote put "change password" on a different page accessed through editprofile.

Ah, a compromise then? That doesn't sound too bad...

I guess I've been misunderstood, what I meant is actually ignore the password change only if one of the fields is blank, and otherwise perform the password changing or show an error, depending on whether the user typed his password correctly or not.

No... we were discussing alternate, less error-prone ways of doing password changing, maybe you should read the thread?

No preview layout feature + you have to enter your password every time you edit your profile = fail.

What an unfeature Mega-Mario!

You don't.

What an unfeature Mega-Mario!

That's what has been discussed before.

That's caused by browsers autofilling the first password field but not the second one. You have to either enter your password again, or just blank out the first password field.

I suggested that the password change is ignored if the second field is empty (but only if it empty; if it is filled but differs from the first field, an error is still returned). I've been told people could then think their password was changed when it wasn't and then get stuck. Well, I think that if someone is moronic enough to not understand the meaning of the "retype" field, he is too moronic to post on a discussion board anyway.

It has also been suggested that the password change was made on a separate page. Technically, it is more work, but could work.

Or you can just stop your browser from autoentering the password in the editprofile page.

How do you do that anyway? Forcing the user to learn browser quirks for a feature he's never going to benefit from is very unfriendly.

Well, it's something you enabled on your own at some point. I suppose I could force everyone's browsers to forget it by just renaming both password fields. I must admit I've been a little bit irate at people setting their browsers to do that because especially in the case of administrators, it caused countless accidents of them setting the passwords of other accounts they edited to theirs.

But eh, fixed it as initially suggested. Forgive my initial laziness.
