clicky and watch the video

They are really desperate to reclaim a piece of the information retrieval and analysis market cake from Google, it seems; but as this illustrates quite nicely, whoever loses the competition, we probably will end up winning (barring difficult-to-anticipate considerations like how much will be left of Google's role as a "force for good" if they are put under competitive pressure).

I honestly went into that thinking "I'm still gonna use Google Maps, but I want to see what Microsoft is trying..."

By the end, I was pretty amazed. The fluidity of it was impressive, especially in their version of the Street View. I like the integration of pictures from various places, and the video was incredibly well done. I also really like how you could look up into the sky and see constellations and whatnot.

Still, while these features are nice, I'm probably going to stick with Google. All these features are nice and surprisingly well implemented (though I'm still a bit confused as to how you'd get the video feed thing to show up), but I just wouldn't use them. Whenever I go to Google Maps, I go there to print out directions to a place. If I want to look around cities and such on that kind of level, I either mess around in Street View or go to Google Earth. Earth also covers the constellations and sky part, too. Microsoft is doing an impressive job trying to compete with Google, and they have a lot of very cool features that they have running really well, but for me, I wouldn't use anything more than what I get with Google Maps.

Also, is it just me, or was he using an iPhone? If he was, I can't help but laugh at the irony of a Microsoft employee using an Apple product during such a big demonstration.

It'd be funnier if it was a Nexus One.

EDIT: Well, I'm certainly impressed, but I personally don't see myself using most of that functionality. Would be nice if they could add some NPCs and make it in to an RPG.

Vpike already offers a 3D view like from the video, and probably covers your house (since mine being a really obscure place is covered). Let's the if they live up to the hype, it reminds me of the Spore video that turned out to be a crappy game 3 years later.

(Powered by Google Maps/Streets, of course)
