Yo, anybody use, or know of, a decent, open-source anti-virus program for XP?

I'm using ClamWin right now, which is good, but it doesn't offer real-time virus scanning.

I know there was an offshoot of ClamWin that offered something like it, and there's a project on Sourceforge named Winpooch that everyone keeps recommending, but both those projects were discontinued years ago.

Any suggestions?

There's Avast Free Antivirus. I'm not sure if it's open source, but it does real-time scans. You can get it over at cnet downloads.

Why do you want it to be open source? Are you planning on editing it and making your own compile or something?

I'm just curious.

From what I think, it'd be a pretty bad idea to make an antivirus open source, as it'd give hackers/virus coders a way to know how to bypass and/or deactivate your antivirus. Feel free to prove me wrong though.

ClamAV is about the only one out there (and Winpooch/ClamWin use it ...)

Microsoft's Security Essentials is actually a pretty good anti-virus and it doesn't blast you with ads. Caveat of course is that it's not open source

yeah, it's obviously not open source, but ms security essentials is definitely pretty nice.

Well, it's mostly because I just like the idea of collaborative software.

And oop--I should have written "free, open source."

But anyway, I also feel like, if the people working on a project are doing it because they, themselves, actually want to use the software, the end result will be acceptably functional, light, and user-friendly.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Well, my dad taught computer class in collage, and he used to own a computer repair shop. He insists the my family use AVG, and Microsoft Security Essentials. security essentials has real time scanning but I'm not so sure about open-source.

Does Linux count as open-source antivirus software? (I know, there are Linux viruses.)

On a more serious note, ClamAV/ClamWin is under the GPL. I have no idea how well it works relative to others, but as for the claim that open source will make virus writers' jobs easier: It also makes it so that any programmer can fix the antivirus software to handle any discovered or hypothetical virus. I suspect more people are likely willing to help fix flaws in ClamWin than to write viruses targeted to its flaws.

Assumptions are dangerous. You'd be better off using something that works, rather than something that was supposedly made with everyone behind it feeling better than the makers of practically everyone other anti-virus software. Considering how I generally don't see ClamWin in anti-virus comparisons, I'd say it's not too hot when it comes to actually doing its job.

your dad is right about mse at least. avg isn't all that great anymore, but mse is excellent, and 2.0(still in beta) is a nice improvement.

e: i didn't think about it before, but if an av is open source you're just inviting malware authors to check it out. not a great idea.

ClamWin does not support resident scanning. Hence the reason nobody bothers to compare it. Otherwise from what comparisons I could find it seems it does better than most free alternatives (except for the top few that everyone actually uses...), at the expense of being slow.
