Oh we didn't have Saturday school. Worst-case scenario was that kids had to come in on days off to serve their detention.

That sounds... Worse. Saturdays are one thing, since they're constant, but on days off? Unless you're talking about the weekend, it'd be horrible to serve detention on break or something.

Times like these make me glad that I rarely ever get detentions. I've had no behavior problems this year... Yet.

Yeah, many people at my school ditch and they get detention for three whole days. I shall never be a part of that.

You know, there are times I would ditch school.

Problem is when the closest store that isn't a hardware/gas station is about a 20 minute drive and I lack a car, I can't go anywhere at all, therefore it is pointless, just like school.

Not to mention that if I get suspended over skipping school (which my parents know how much I hate school) I lose access to all things in the house (computer, Internet, games) and am forced to work. They know I am in trouble and will make sure I am punished. :\

My school has no detention. Just referrals that ALWAYS get you suspended unless you are a football player/cheerleader/study-freak honors student...

Mostly do the work that the teachers gave them. They're also excluded from the rest of the school. They go in a portible. Some of the people that go there think it's better than being in class.

Unless it's afterschool detention (like here), where you spend an extra hour (or more) after everyone gets out doing nothing...

The late bus you have to take sucks hard too (it passed my stop several times before it actually stopped, since it opted to take the longest path possible to all destinations)

Last year I only got 1 referal/demerit what have you... And in some schools, there are sometimes these demerits that are a little bit worse. Well bascally that's the kind I got last year, a category 2 demerit. Two of those will get you a detention.

This year, I only get 3 demerits or less in a quarter. It takes three demerits to ge a detention but since demerits can't be carried over onto the next quarter, I'm safe. I've been pretty good at demerit dodging and I have never gotten a detention so far.

In the past four years of high school, I'd say I've missed roughly--about ninety classes. No detentions or anything of the sort, mind you.

Hey, I should have been in class right now. The teacher was 15 minutes late though, which (at least here) means that you can go.

Last summer, one teacher was late by about 45 minutes because her watch stopped.

There's rules in college/university here - you need to give the teacher X amount of time (depending on the class length) to show up, but if they don't then it's an automatic cancelled class.

Worked out once for me when a teacher was late for a class where we were going to have a TEST...

Happened to me as well. The 15-minute rule kicked in on many occasions during my sportswriting class... which meant that I showed up for an 8:45 AM class more often than the professor. Needless to say, he didn't last the whole semester.

I never skipped school. The only times I missed school was because I was sick.

Here in college, I missed a class for the very first time today. I didn't *skip* it, but certain circumstances caused me to miss it. Basically, on the calendar that's issued to everyone, the spring break block lasted from Monday, through the weekend, into the following Monday. Apparently, it was a misprint, and I found out at 8 AM this morning, after having stayed up until 5 AM. Not the best way to start the day. I had to scramble to get packed up (I got everything though), I got to college, unpacked, and was able to catch my other two classes today.

So yeah, that's why I missed one of my three classes today.

So people with good grades are exempt from the rules that people with lesser grades must adhere to? Brilliant.

Never said it worked.

They never held me back and I got a helping of detention (which I stopped serving) until I quit.

Also, I wish I went to your school, cause we don't have placement tests or any of that in my public high school. Advance placement classes were a joke. The most advance you could get was Honors English (which was laughably easy and horribly boring at the same time) and moved up a grade in math. (Which again was horribly easy.)

The English AP classes are a joke. Barely anyone gets over a 50% on the multiple-choice section, and that's after the brunt of the class is taught. Most of people in the classes are the type that use SparkNotes and don't read books outside of class.
In retrospect, the math classes are a joke, too. Half the time is spent brushing up on things that should have been taught properly in the lower level classes (Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry). A lot of people don't really understand the math and opt for a cookbook approach; I saw someone studying for a math test with flashcards.

I use Sparknotes because I'm lazy, and I have a really hard time reading anything that's in a poetic format for some reason. Reading the translation of Dante's Inferno is pretty boring, but I read the Sparknotes and actually couldn't put them down.

You thought Dante's Inferno was boring?

Hell, if the library would've let me buy the Divine Comedy, I would've.
