So, 2010 has started, and I take it the vacations should be over by now or at least soon for most people here.

As most of you will undoubtedly have to return to some kind of real life after this interlude of present-receiving, fireworks-burning and excessive internet usage - what kind of things will you be returning to at the start of 2010?

For those living in countries where the definitions are unclear, "school" is to encompass everything up to and including High School. Everything where you learn towards a Bachelor's Degree or similar or above counts as "university".

For me, it's University, on that matter. First year of a CS+Natsci Maths/Physics programme at Cambridge.

I'm currently doing nothing but eating a lot of my dad's bandwidth, though I'm half-actively looking for a job. I guess that classifies me as NEET/unemployed.

Still employed as a computer technician. I'm one of the lucky ones, local...since a lot of people, my father included, were laid off on the 31st of December.

Is the implication that your father was employed at the same business as you?

(If you still live together with them, wouldn't that have the potential to produce some hard feelings within your family?)

Naw, I haven't lived with my father for over...four years now. Actually, he used to be in construction, a branch manager at a place that went through construction lettings for signs and plans and other stuff and the start of his troubles was back right when the economy was about to tank and the completely shut down his department that was there after 35 years. Since then he'd been looking for odd jobs and ended up with a job...basically selling pipes and other plumbing utilities for not too much money an hour (about half or less what he was making before that).

Course, he was one of the only hard workers there, too...even though he's pushing 50. And he's one of the ones that did deliveries with that kind of stuff. He hadn't been there long but it was fairly surprising to see him get cut the way he did...but with the FILO principle and the fact that they essentially knew he was pretty much too good for the job and was probably looking around anyways, it ended with him out.

My sister's the same way but she ended up quitting. Her husband is still jobless. My mother still has the same job she's had since near the turn of the century...so she's really well off.

Ah. This sounds like age might have been a factor as well... if they come into a position where they feel obliged to lay off some people, they naturally give those who would retire in a couple of years anyway preference as youthful flexibility of sorts is seen as more valuable these days, as is the theoretical possibility of them staying with the company for years to come.

How is IT taking the crisis, anyway? Construction, with its intimate connection to housing and immovables in general, is one thing, but computing might be an area where the issues only propagate with considerable delay, if at all...

Well, I get two ends of it...because I'm doing IT but at the same time I'm making computers and consoles that run burning and drilling machines in the steel/manufacturing industry. So that's more than just simple comp work, I'm afraid.

Although I will say we are slow as heck right now. Like construction, if people are only now getting the money to do stuff, they have to go through and order things to get to us eventually. The bad part of working like I am is that we're one of the first to go down with the economy and one of the last to pick up.

As far as I know from people usually working straight IT and nothing but, there's really not been much of any change outside of when major OS releases are in...then the calls flood for HOW TO USE, etc. My type of IT help is usually local or trying to get a customer to work their burnmachine to operate their fricking laser or plasma torches and all that.

Work.

At least being a mug a checkout operator is a fairly secure job. Actually, it pays well too.. surprisingly.

The week of 1/23 is when my classes start back up, so I've still got a bit of free time left.

I'll probably be hikkikomori-ing my fuzzy ass off again this year, so I'll vote for slacking.

School started up for me this week. My exams begin at the end of this next week, and then stretch into the week after. Ugh, I miss break already.

Back to school. I started back on Wednesday the 6th and was supposed to attend for the rest of the week. But due to the weather, I got out Thursday and Friday.

Work, although I don't have an official job yet. Doing oddjobs mostly on prospect real estate developments, like painting garages and cleaning out walls. Not getting an actual career job at this point could tragically result in me becoming a level 60 basement troll by the end of the year.

That aside, 2010 is set to be a landmark year in my life. School is done and I've just moved to a completely different state. My life is basically a huge clean slate right now with few hindrances and enormous opportunity.
