So I'm using Windows 7.

I want to save a file to C:\.
Then I'm told the following message (translated from French):

*file*
You aren't authorized to write here.
Consult the administrator to get an authorization.

Do you want to use the folder *my user name*?

Okay. Now the real fun begins.
I open the control panel, User account settings for my account, change account type. And guess what I see?

I'm already an administrator. Note that I can't be anything else since my account is the only one on my computer, and the Normal user option is greyed out.

And here's the description for the Administrator option (translated from French once again):

Administrators have total access to the computer and can accomplish all the changes they want. Depending on the notification parameters, administrators can be asked to provide their password or to confirm it between applying changes that could affect the other users.

What the fuck?!?

Seems something in Windows is moronic; either Explorer for not knowing I am the admin, or the control panel for telling admins can do anything when they actually can't.

So, finally, I'm already the almighty admin on my computer, what else do I need to be able to save files into C:\ ?

Also, I can't copy or delete files into C:\ either. I'm also told that I need admin rights I already have. However, I can still create folders into C:\.

Seriously. What did Micro$oft coders drink before coding that crap?!?

So here's a solution posted by Trelior:

I'm not sure how to do it in Windows 7, but I assume it's close to Vista.

Here's how I did it in Vista:
You can't be on a Home Edition of Windows, neither Basic nor Premium will let you do it for some reason.
  1. Create a temporary administrator account and log into it

  2. Go into MMC and add the Local Users and Groups snap-in

  3. Browse to your list of users

  4. Delete your primary user account (the one you want to promote)

  5. Rename the God Admin account to EXACTLY what your primary account's name was

  6. Reboot and delete your temporary admin account

  7. Enjoy full permissions

That should work.

Note: it doesn't work under Home versions of Windows 7 for no reasons other than some morons at Micro$oft like to take arbitrary measures in order to annoy users

Solutions for Home versions of Windows 7:
- Call Micro$oft and shout at them. Not guaranteed to give good results.
- Burn your copy of Windows right in front of the Micro$oft headquarters to show them your dislike of this restriction. But most likely they will not care about you doing it.
- Downgrade to XP or older. But you need to backup all your data first.
- Hack your OS. But if you're no hacker, well...
- Defenestrate your computer. Radical but deprecated solution. Seems most angry males do it, though.
- Shoot yourself. Last solution, avoid using it.

Be careful. We are NOT responsible for any damage you may cause to your computer. If you feel like you're going to blow up your computer, don't do anything.

Administrator status isn't having all permissions; administrator status is having permission to edit all permissions.

In other words, go edit the ACLs of your C: root folder.

Well that's curious. I'm God Admin of my machine, have been since I promoted myself in Vista about a year and a half ago and I remained God Admin after my upgrade to Windows 7 three weeks ago.

Case in point: I just tested what you said was stopping you in your C:\ in mine, and I got no errors whatsoever. Something tells me that you didn't properly promote yourself and you're still a "normal" administrator.

Set the permissions on C:\ to anything for all the users (I'm the only user anyway). And now, I get an error like:

0x80070522: the client doesn't have needed privilege.

Interesting. How do you do that, though?

Right click -> run as administrator.

It's like sudo for Windows. You need to explicitly raise the program to administrative rights, which is really one of the best things Microsoft has done for Windows to be honest.

Hm. How do you do that on explorer.exe?

Doesn't work on the new window it opens when doing it on explorer.exe anyway.

Edit: renamed the thread for more clarity.

Now that I'm not sure about. Later Windows versions are a bit odd about writing to files or overwriting files in certain locations. I remember I had to patch a DLL in c:\windows\system32, and I had to use takeown or something in the command prompt. Might want to do some research...which I can't because I'm not in Windows at the moment.

Adds "Take Ownership" to the Explorer file context menu The link seems to be down right now...

Now you, too, can become a real admin:

Sorry. I had to do that.

the point of vista's security(and 7, it's pretty much the same for both, except 7's uac is more granular) is that you DON'T leave your account as the/a system admin. you set up the admin account(which is disabled by default with good reason) and then use the admin's CREDENTIALS when you want to get past a uac prompt. you aren't supposed to turn off uac or try to get around a lot of that stuff, it's for security.

it's your computer to ruin, though, so you may want to try setting yourself as the owner of all of the directories on the c drive(default owner should be "trusted installer") and making sure you have an admin account for that. then, try deleting/creating directories. you can also do some nifty group policy stuff if you have a better version of vista than home premium. (if not, you have to do it through registry entries)

Uh? What security? Protecting users against themselves?

If you're at a place where malicious people could do bad stuff using your account while you're not here, then password-protecting it is already enough. No need for annoying extra "security".

yes, it partially protects people from themselves in that it notifies when system changes are made and prompts for action. think about it, though. if you use a standard user account with the admin user/pass for uac prompts and someone gets into your account to do something malicious, they(for the most part) can't do it because they won't have those admin credentials.

Yeah, I don't see the big deal about UAC prompts in 7. They're much more reasonable than they were in Vista. In linux it's more or less the same, certain programs like package managers need to be run as root, or if you're a sudoer, you just need to provide your information. Luckily Linux isn't completely retarded about it in that you really pretty much know when your program is running as root. They really should take on the UNIX users/permissions/etc style. :p
