So yeah. Chocolate layout. People should like it

Here's a quote. As you can see, quote boxes have their own style too.
Small stretch test for quote box...

Passed.

And okay.

Here's a link. But don't click it, it leads nowhere. Unless you want to know what nowhere is.

Stretch test...
Not needed anymore

v1.0
The text color was selected to make it contrast with the background highly, without hurting eyes.

The post box has a translucent brown background to help the text compete less with the background (which is already not very busy). People using IE6 and older will not see this translucency because it's actually a PNG (CSS opacity sucks).

The chocolate background was taken from FilterForge, a nice place where you can find lots of backgrounds which tile seamlessly. Put it in my ImageShack account so I don't feel like a bandwidth stealer.

The PNG was made with Photoshop, but really, any image editing software other than MS Paint sure can do that.

v1.1
Text/border color changed to #ffefdf.

v2.0
Fixed the background issue on small posts.
Added a mushroom picture at the right.

v2.1
Shrunk the mushroom to 200x200.
An attempt to give the quoteboxes better appearance.

v2.2
Three 100x100 mushrooms (actually one image) replace that 200x200 mushroom. They represent what Mario needs every day to survive. Also their ordering is inspired from Traffic Light's layout

v2.3
One image per mushroom now. So that they adjust to fill empty space better when the post is bigger.

So... how is it? Opinions are welcome! That's what this thread is for!

I don't think Cyan and Brown look good together, I'd use white for the text or some very light shade of the same Brown.

Changed the color to a very light shade of brown (#ffefdf). Also changed color for links so they're more visible.

Better. Though, the quote is a bit obnoxious to look at.

Edit: And when you don't have much text, your layout cuts out before the bottom border. Looks poor.

Quotebox style changed: nuked the horizontal lines, more narrow border, and more padding.

Also, I'm going to fix the background issue on small posts. But I didn't figure out a way to arrange for that yet.

Your quotebox is still a bit wide, isn't it? It really stands out stacking so many times when multiquoted. Wide lines are irritating to the eye.

More narrow border. Less margin to the left of the quoteboxes, and nuked their borders. HR's are back.

I wouldn't use a one-pixel PNG for that transparency effect. If it's a single RGBA value, a 64x64 PNG won't be very much bigger in file size, but tile faster.

I never said it was slow for me. I was speaking in a more general sense, but thanks for changing it anyway.

You're right.
But anyway your suggestion is honored.

I've already seen layouts use 1-pixel PNGs, for example, Treeki's. Or even the format toolbar smiley menu on some early AcmlmBoard.

But CSS opacity is worse. My very first layout - the light green one - used it because it was made quickly. But seeing how it makes content blend with what's behind the translucent container, it is definitely not suitable to anything.

Here's an improved version of the layout.
- Fixed the background issue on small posts.
- Added a picture at the right.

For some reason, IE seems to ignore the margin setting of the main table that now replaces the div. But that's not much a problem. Knowing how IE respects the CSS standard, it could have been far worse.

The picture seems far to big, I'd shrink it down a bit. It takes up about 30% of your horizontal space, so yeah.

+1

Though on my resolution it takes about 55% of his horizontal space, that's giganormous.

Shrunk to 200x200.

Does it still need to be shrunk again?

Also changed the style of the quoteboxes.

Yeah, you may want to check Trelior's layout if you haven't done so yet, he also has a mushroom on it, and it seems about the right size a big mushroom should be.

If you are worried about your layout not filling enough post space and being left a blank space under it, just make the mushroom 100x200, keep its aspect ratio and add two transparent rectangles above and below it. Or you can add 1 or 2 different mushrooms to it, on vertical position.

Um... I don't know if it's the case for you, but for me Trelior's shroom is really bigger than mine.

And the mushroom is still too big. I thought about an image with two or three 100x100 shrooms on it:

Okay, it's a bit inspired from your layout...

No, it doesn't. I know because I built this layout with Firefox in mind since it's the browser I use.
