Greetings SMW Hackers,

Been wanting to show my idea for a while now. I may have been working on various fangame projects over the last few years (Like Judgespear's "Mushroom Kingdom Fusion" and now MegaPhilX's "Mega Man 10"), but I'm a complete beginner to hacks.

I thought the best place to start was with SMW, as there had been many awesome hacks for that and Lunar Magic seemed liked such an easy way to hack it

As a beginner I wanted to start off with something simple. I'm a Ninji fan and loved the SMW hack "The Ninji Saga". I always thought Ninji needed more exposure in the world of hacks and so I expanded on his sprite sheet so that he could have "Super Mario", "Fire Mario" and "Cape Mario" sprites.

Thanks to tutorials and learning YYCHR99, I begun the long arduous task of drawing up new sprites, using the Ninji Saga ones as a basis, I finally expanded Ninji's spriteset, he can now fire and fly. It took ages to piece together his cape flying sprites, but its finally done.



I suppose in the long run I'd like to release this Ninji Sprite Sheet at SMW Central as an ExGFX [PLAYER] Ninji. But to test it out, first I've been putting together a hack to test him in.

A simple approach to hack for my first project: A slight alteration to the original SMW Redrawn. I'm calling it "Ninji Stars in SMW Redrawn". I'm learning to add in certain things like altered palletes, custom sprites and custom HUD, the basics. Also using YYCHR99 to alter some enemy appearances.











And also thanks to certain tutorials, like TeamHackerz1's "Custom Sprites/Sprite Tool" Tutorial, I was able to learn how to add the custom "[Sprite] Walking Ninji ala SMB2" from SMW Central.

It's all going okay so far except for one issue. We all know that the original Ninji in SMW is tileset specific, so if you wanted to put him in other levels, you'd need to "Change GFX in Header" and Change Sprite GFX to E: SP1=00, SP2=01, SP3=13, SP4=0E (Ninji). But we also know that NOTE: Changing the FG/BG GFX index may alter the tileset specific objects available. If the level makes heavy use of these objects, it may become mangled beyond recognition.

That is indeed the case, I can't put Ninji anywhere else in the game without screwing up other enemies.

But.. I have an idea, seeing as the Custom Ninji worked fine when I added him in, I wondered if thats the solution to making the original Ninji work. I'd like some help with creating a custom sprite Ninji that just hops up and down like the original SMW Ninji, that way we can bypass his tileset specific-ness. Also I'd like to learn how custom sprites are made and how you choose what sprite in the spriteset is allocated. I'd prefer not to to overwrite any previous enemy sprites and try and allocate the original Ninji sprite in SMW's sprite sheet to this custom enemy.

Ah yes. Trasher's Ninji hack. It pleases me to see this concept revisited, and the edits look good. But only when seperate. Ninji as he is drawn here does not mesh well with the whole Redrawn set.

I think I still have Rick's title screen somewhere.

I don't see the blending in as too problematic. Sure, Redrawn has somewhat more intricately textured (and perhaps even "messy") objects, but the detail-to-size ratio in the Ninji sprite already is so high that you hardly could make much of a visible difference.

Either way, this is a pretty cute idea.

For custom sprites, I recommend getting solid in some hacking 101 topics first, like hexadecimal numbers and assembly language programming. Once you got basics like that down, getting into programming custom sprites should be a fairly trivial task.

An easy way to make it appear more fitting with the redrawn graphics would be to wash-out the colors a bit more.
